4 out of 5 eggsDoes what it is designed to do ...

Pros: 800x480 screen, bright and sharp at sub-5" -- perfect for reading PDFs, surfing the Internet on your palm or showing off photos. Snappy Ti Cortex (ARM9) core. Touchscreen.

Cons: Proprietary Linux distribution. Included USB power charge at 500mA is grossly insufficient. Missing codecs will set you back another $20. Does not seem to read password-protected PDFs (why not, even Linux's eVince PDF viewer does, let alone the Adobe Reader for Linux).

Other Thoughts: Let's get one thing straight, 800x480 is the *MINIMUM* required for PDF and web browsing. This thing is great. At 4.8", I can pull it out on a plane and read books as well as surf fairly well (if the aircraft has Internet). My wife's iPod Touch and the iPhone are not remotely as good at their resolutions for such. I bought this primarily as a photo viewer -- yes. It's 800x480 is better than 98% of photo frames out there (that are $100+), brighter and sharper too.

1 out of 5 eggsSTAY AWAY

Pros: None.

Cons: Two units out of the box were defective and support is non-existing. All the bad press on Archos is TRUE. They should not be in business with this kind of support/quality.

Other Thoughts: Buy something else.

2 out of 5 eggsGood until . . .

Pros: The Archos has many different functions, all of which are nicely packaged into one "player", which is what I was looking for when I decided to replace my old MP3 player.

Cons: After 2-3 weeks of ownership, the player started rebooting on it's own. Then would freeze and have to be rebooted. The final straw was the power button stopped working and would be extremely difficult to turn on and off. Due to the overall frustration, I have since scapped this player and replaced with another brand. BTW . . . unable to RMA or return due to being in Iraq and shipped to an APO address.

Other Thoughts: After initial purchase, I was very excited about all the functions and features available thru the Archos 5. However, the glitz and glam was only "skin deep" and the overall functionality and reliability didn't meet up to the billing given.

4 out of 5 eggsarchos 5

Pros: This thing has so many pros! dont listen to those tards saying it doesnt have shuffle because it absolutely does. you just go to music setting and then shuffle and choose folder or all.
the bigest thing is the internet is as fast as my laptop.
it plays hi def movies
and it is just generaly awesome

Cons: restarts sometimes(seldomly)
battery life is average but not a huge deal
ill admit it is kinda anoying at times when you want to play something and you have to buy the plugin for it. but this things plays any file type you can throw at it.

Other Thoughts: i would say buy it! neweggs customer service is unmatched!

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Does exactly what it says it will admirably.

It is rock solid and steady. I have dropped it about 6 times (2 times on asphalt or concrete) and it works as good as it always has.

It fits perfectly in my pockets, and I sometimes carry the peripheral cord and headphones.

It is an impressively attractive piece of hardware, much the envy of my friends ;)

The simple option to save links to files on your main screen is amazingly useful.

The PC Hard Drive mode is convenient

The reduced price makes it a steal

Cons: My major disappointment is that the PDF reader is slow. taking b/w 4-6 sec. (yes I counted) for a slightly pic heavy page. The Pdf reader was one of the requirements for me.

I would rather of seen a 10-band EQ rather than the 5-band included.

The battery life is much shorter than advertised. maybe 1/2 or even 3/4 as short. * but I don't let the back light stay off or let it sleep for very long as I constantly am switching files. just an aside.

You have to hunt for working widgets and a working Texteditor. (Archosfan is the best place for hints) but they greatly add to the functionality so it is worth it.

Linux is no fun and they work hard to prevent hacking and customization.

Other Thoughts: Definitely get the docking port as it increases the options for use about 5x.

Most of my cons are so minor that I couldn't dock an egg for it.
(hmm the price has gone up, since I got it for $249.99)

4 out of 5 eggsFantastic Device, some faults

Pros: Good sound quality, huge amount of space, fast internet, plays flash applications, plays movies, etc.

Cons: Only real con I found was that every time I try to watch a movie, if it starts working hard and I try to pause the movie to let it buffer, the Archos shuts down. not a big con, but considering it's an internet media tablet, it should have most of those problems taken care of.

Other Thoughts: Amazingly sensitive, love it,
pretty easy to see marks on the metal, but no biggy.
It would be nice to have all the codecs preloaded instead of paying for them, but just get a media converter!

3 out of 5 eggsmeh

Pros: 120 GB, great screen, touch responds nicely, web browser works fine for most uses, battery lasts great for my needs. can access shared folders on network.

Cons: needs like $300 in accesories and software packs to make full use of most of the functions/charge in less than a day...
new model means basically no new firmware.
no hard buttons, have to wake up screen and look to skip etc. (unless you get the FM tuner accessory)
Syncing is just bad (WMP 11(XP), 12(Win7))
hangs regularly while using browser.
No hulu/other flash 10

Other Thoughts: not worth it.
don't bother.
I was enamored with this when I first saw it, so I bought it, but I now regret it.

5 out of 5 eggslove it

Pros: Beautiful screen, metal case, able to drag and drop files, easy set up, built in speaker, verygood sound( playing through high quality in ear phones.

Cons: Proprietary cable, would have been nice to be mini usb. finger print magnet.

Other Thoughts: First off this is an excellent device. I own a sandisk view, works great and a ipod touch first gen. For those who complain about having to purchase the codacs, remember that apple makes you pay for firmware updates. I have spent $20 so far on this and gave me little for my money. I hate I tunes, have to go to the pain to convert songs to play on my sandisk. I purchased codacs for my new archos 5 on flebay for $25 so cheaper than archos. I have read about the unit crashing, so far it has not for me. The speaker is nice, and is what it is a small speaker which does the job.
This is my first purchase through newegg, and I am very happy. I ordered on sunday shipped on monday got it wednesday in eastern ontario. I normally shop in canada but will be giving newegg another try because of the fast service.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome Device

Pros: Excellent device that in my opinion blows away the itouch by a long shot

Cons: But the downside is it has no Bluetooth and thats a no no because we live in a world of wireless.
Now they're coming out with a new model this week 9/14/2009 that has all the goodies

Other Thoughts: This device is awesome and sofar it has the best picture quality i,ve ever seen on a portable.
