5 out of 5 eggsvery happy

Pros: Garmin update of maps as soon as I registered it. Can't beat up to date product at such a good price. It looked brand new to me.
Works well, fast recalculate when I don't go the way she wants.

Cons: have to hunt through menus to select how you want to go...fastest or what ever, insead of being an option as soon as you put in destination.

1 out of 5 eggsScreen died in just over 1 year

Pros: Gets you there (for a while).

Cons: My screen died in just over a year of very light use. The software appears still to be working since it still beeps properly and turns off when I touch the spot where it use to say something like "Turn Off." Unfortunately, I don't remember where all the other "touch" spots are located on all the other screens.

4 out of 5 eggsProblem finding address

Pros: Big screen, clear voice, it will get me to the destination IF it can set the destination to begin with.

Cons: The unit often has problem looking up an address. It would completely miss by a block or cannot find the destination wanted.
There is no details of nearby street names, so don't expect you can use this to browse around like google map.
Path chosen may not sensible. A few times it routed me through neighborhoods with many stop signs while it could have told me to take a major road.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat entry level unit

Pros: Got the recertified unit for cheap off Newegg; definitely a good deal so that's a big plus.

I liked the text to speech feature - definitely helps make the correct turns, especially if you're the kind of person who tends to get confused by those annoying streets that are in quick succession and you end up taking the first instead of the second! Knowing the name (without having to look at the GPS) makes it easier to quickly double-check that you'll be heading down the correct street.

It's pretty light and slim. Battery life seemed to be pretty decent. Volume was high enough for me (with the windows up).

All in all, if you're buying a GPS that you'll be using infrequently (like me) or if you want a basic, cheap unit then you could do much worse than this.

Cons: If you look closely, you'll see the framerate drop when the voice directions are spoken out- the scrolling becomes a little choppy. However, I only observed this because I was using it in a bus and was watching the unit carefully. If it's bad enough that you notice this while driving a car, you've either got a faulty unit or you're paying enough attention to the road!

Text to speech is a little off with pronunciations sometimes. My unit pronounces 'Mar' as 'Marge' and 'La' as 'Lane'. Nothing major, just a little weird when you hear it.

Crashed a couple of times - I later found out that it was because I had set a large image as the thumbnail for a favorite POI and if I moved too fast before the image was rendered, the GPS would crash. Changing the image to an actual thumbnail fixed the issue.

Other Thoughts: I had a little trouble with finding satellites the first couple of times that I turned it on. Turns out, after you turn on a GPS the very first time, you should give it a while for it to download ephemeris data from the satellites - the forum post I read said to leave it on, in a fixed position with a good view of the sky for about 20 minutes.

Also, if you can, make sure the GPS locks on to satellites *before* you start moving, otherwise it's just going to take longer to get a lock once you start moving.

Finally, no GPS is perfect and because these devices store map data offline, they can't be up to date with every street. You will eventually come across roads that have been recently closed and so the GPS doesn't know you can't go that way; or roads that have been renamed/have multiple names. It's just the nature of GPS technology so it's something you'll have to deal with with almost any device so it's not a shortcoming of this one in particular.

4 out of 5 eggsgreat gps

Pros: Cheap, couldn't even tell it was refurbished.

Cons: Sometimes it doesn't bring me to the correct location. I need to get the map update. It's only happened to me twice though.

Other Thoughts: Great for the money.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: I already owned a Nuvi 255W and it always worked fine. Bought this one for a friend, even if refurbished, it looks like the plastic shell and screen are brand new and it was packaged like a new device. The refurbished one also does a good job.

Cons: None =)
