Message from TomTom: Recertified units do not come with free map update
- Pros: It is what is!
- Cons: Since some people claimed that they got free map update and some don't. I'm one of those people who couldn't get the free map update. I decided to get to the bottom of this, so I contacted TomTom and sent them the link to these reviews. See other thoughts below for Tomtom official responses to these matter.
- Other Thoughts: Dear TomTom Customer,
Thank you for taking the time to contact TomTom Support regarding the ability to get the Latest Map Guarantee. We are always happy to help.
We do apologize if you feel that every other person in the world received a new map. Looking at the link you provided, it does seem that some folks were lucky enough to get the maps for free, either by providing a promotion code that has shown up in some packages or the map being offered through the HOME program. If you also look in that link that you provided, you will also see that most customers were not eligible for the map.
We apologize if the retailer provided you with miss-information, and we do not have control on what they provide to you. It clearly states on our website that refurbished units are not eligible for the Latest Map Guarantee..
Thank you for choosing TomTom for your navigation needs. If you have any further questions or comments, please email or call us at 866-486-6866 Monday through Friday, 8
Great value, latest maps
- Pros: The 130 is very cheap and packed with features. There are mostly small differences that separate the 130 and the high-end GPSes. I like the on-screen display of TomTom more than that of Garmin since it presents more information. The latest map guarantee works fine.
- Cons: I have two TomToms and a Garmin. The power button on the TomTom is strange on both units. Sometimes a simple push doesn't turn it on. I give it a couple pushes, and it works. TomTom doesn't use Navteq maps, but Teleatlas. Teleatlas maps are improving but somewhat inferior to Navteq in various tests I've run.
- Other Thoughts: I'm not sure why some people here think the latest map guarantee isn't valid. My unit was two quarters out of date, and I plugged it into the computer and downloaded the latest map without any hassle. This option is available from one of the menus, not buttons, so I think people just don't know how to get the map.

Great value
- Pros: I still prefer my Garmin, but this Tom Tom servers as a great backup GPS when both my wife and I need them at the same time.
I do like how the Tom Tom remembers a history of your past searches and will default to your last search. You won't always have to key in "Washington" as it saves your past few searches as options.
- Cons: I had some problem in Phoenix as it claimed the address did not exist. My wife has complained about certain areas in Portland, OR as well.
One time it couldn't sync with the GPS satellites and I had a hard time trying to reset/reboot it.
Lost it
- Pros: Excellent GPS for the price. I like the spoken direction feature. It would not only let you know where to exit, but will also advice you whether to stay left or right if there two or more roads, e.g. one going east and one going west.
- Cons: None
- Other Thoughts: I left it on attached to the inside of the windshield with the suction cup, "in full view" and someone broke into the car and stole it. Even though the car alarm went off, the thief was to quick and got away with it. Lesson learned: don't leave anything of value in your car, especially in full view.
great stuff
- Pros: works as designed
- Cons: no automatic turn on/off feature.
once navigation starts, no way to turn off the navigation and just view map
