The ARCHOS 101 internet tablet is a tablet who’s choice you’ll be proud of. You’ll have in your hands the best of the highly desirable Android technology with a large, high-resolution 10.1’’ screen, a weight of 480g, and a thinness of just 12mm. Beyond containing your window into the Internet and your HD multimedia, your device is completely customizable with a world of apps to make it your personal tablet. This powerful tablet uses the Android browser to make browsing the web easy and fun with a very intuitive user interface.

With the adjustable leg stand, you will always have the best position to tap out your emails, view a movie or enjoy the photo frame application. By connecting the tablet to WiFi, you will be able to do everything that you used to do with a PC at home, but on the go: your apps, the Internet, your photos, music and videos, eBooks and 3D games.

  • newegg A design to turn heads The nice big 10,1’’ diagonal screen sits within a very slim and light design. With more people looking toward this new trend in Internet tablets, ARCHOS has carefully matched the power of the Android platform to a seductive design that will have heads turning.
  • newegg Capacitive multitouch screen Whether you’re looking at your ARCHOS in landscape or portrait mode, your pictures will look bright and crystal clear on the high-resolution 1024 x 600 pixel screen. It doesn’t matter if you have it in your hands or if it’s standing on a table with the built-in leg stand. You will always be impressed by the quality of the screen.
  • newegg Tethering (Using your portable phone as a modem) Want to be connected anywhere? Just plug your mobile phone equipped with 3.5 G & Bluetooth technology, simply pair it up to your ARCHOS 101 internet tablet via Bluetooth or even via USB cable. This will give you easy access to Internet directly on your device anytime and anywhere. There’s no need to pay an extra fee when you already have a data service plan.
  • newegg Home Streaming from your PC The ARCHOS 101 internet tablet has Samba and UPnP protocols: this means that you play your movies, videos, and photos on your ARCHOS, but these files are really located on your computer in another room. You don’t need to store everything on your ARCHOS to enjoy viewing it on your ARCHOS! Your files fly through the air over WiFi. The ARCHOS 101 internet tablet is the small and convenient portable computer that you’ve always dreamed about.
  • newegg HDMI video output Via the HDMI connection (HDMI cable sold separately), enjoy the Android interface on your TV screen. 2 out of 5 eggsFrustrating!

Pros: Looks good, lightweight, very portable

Cons: Touch screen is not responsive close to edges. Lag time when browsing internet similar to dial-up speed. The touch screen problem alone is enough to make this tablet not worth buying.

Other Thoughts: This tablet has been a continual frustration, and I should have just returned it. Having little time to work with it more at first, I waited too long.

Next time I'll spend more and just buy a new iPad!!

1 out of 5 eggsMost dissapointed

Pros: NONE

Cons: Touchscreen works poorly, processor too weak (sluggish and lags), over-all buggy and quirky

Other Thoughts: I am 40 years old now and I have made countless purchases over my many years. I have NEVER in my life encountered such a poorly designed and dysfunctional product.

My biggest regret is that I did not get back here to warn more of you sooner. I got so frustrated with the device that I shelved it and waited for a new update, hoping it would get better. Three updates later and it is still clearly the worst purchase I have EVER made.

2 out of 5 eggsDecent Tablet but Poor App Network

Pros: The physical aspects of the tablet are great. Decent weight, but not too heavy, lots of useful ports and the tablet is pretty fast.

Cons: The AppLib is horrible! It took two days to finally connect to it, then once we did, it was easy to get kicked off. This does not have the "App Market" most of us Android users are used to. The AppLib is not well supported and not ready for tons of users per day. I'm sure this was due to it being Christmas, but don't want to have trouble connecting and staying connected due to the amount of users trying to access apps.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Price. Screen size. USB port. Kickstand. Angry Birds is cool on a 10" screen.

Cons: Periodically I have to recalibrate the screen. Sometimes it locks up. Not too bad, but gets an egg.

Other Thoughts: I got this for Mom so she could read books. I figured for a little more she could also cruise the web and check her email without leaving her couch. Of course she's addicted to mahjong and solitaire now. I've used it to watch movies and it worked very well for that. It's not an iPad, but for the price, you can't beat it.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat WiFi Tablet running FroYo (2.2.1)

Pros: Manufacturer Support - 14 firmware updates since initial release, including Android 2.1 to 2.2. Customer support is responsive and knowledgeable.
Battery Life - is good in most cases...some games will drain it faster
Size - Perfect for landscape use, light weight
Accessory Ports - USB, micro USB, mini HDMI, microSD, earphone
Screen - good brightness
Sturdy kick-stand
Power Adaptor - has support for a few different electrical interfaces including US and European.

Cons: WiFi - When you setup a connection, make sure that you check the Powersave Disabled box, otherwise it will keep turning off your connection (which gave me problems syncing up arctools.)

Android Marketplace not installed - You have to install this yourself using ArcTools from the Archos Apps Lib (create a user account on archos to use the Apps Lib). See note above about wi-fi connection

Brightness - If you haven't updated to the latest firmware, there are 3 screen brightness settings. Putting the unit on the lowest will cause problems coming out of standby. Up the brightness and this will go away until you update the unit

Other Thoughts: This is a great wi-fi only tablet with good options and features. My number one priority was to find a tablet that was being supported and improved by the manufacturer. Archos was the only manufacturer with a unit under $300 that I could find that regularly updated their firmware and updated the version of Android on the tablet.

I love that I can plug in my flash drive and move files from or to the tablet directly without using a pc. There is also a usb to power outlet cord available online to charge this from a computer, if you want that capability.

This is great for browsing the web and playing most games. Some games won't work right on the tablet or require turning the unit vertical which is awkward, but that isn't the tablet's fault. Make sure you update to the latest firmware, install arc tools and marketplace (a search will get you instructions on how to do it), and disable powersave on all your wi-fi connections and you will be set to conquer the world on your tablet.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat hacker-friendly tablet

Pros: * Great screen resolution
* Bluetooth + wifi for maximum connectivity (later firmwares even allow you to tether your tablet to your cell phone for internet access!)
* Well supported hardware makes development a breeze!
* Full USB port allows tablet to server as USB host device (with software mod)
* Easy "iPad-like" touch screen is painless to interface with
* Sturdy kick-stand
* Good battery life, even under heavy use

Cons: * Live wallpapers (which seem to be all the rage) are somewhat of a resource hog
* Camera is grainy, low-resolution. Please note that this is a front-facing cam which Android 2.2 does not always allow apps to access
* Comes with 2.2 when most devices these days have 2.3
* Archos probably will not release Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) for gen 8 devices like this. But this is more speculation than fact, they might after all...
* Screen is somewhat dim compared to most devices, even at full brightness. This could present visibility issues under direct light

Other Thoughts: * Updated to fw 2.4.80
* Installed UrukDroid 1.6RC4 (upgraded from 1.5) - please note that this involves installing the Special Developer Edition firmware from Archos, which voids your warranty
* The default market, Appslib, is somewhat out of date but contains a ton of apps for tablets. Install Arctools from Appslib to get access to the Google Marketplace, for the most bleeding edge software

4 out of 5 eggsIt works

Pros: It works as an internet tablet.

Cons: You have to search google to find out how to install the android market but it is possible, I wish it was included.

Other Thoughts: It works, If you only need to browse the internet then it does good, don't expect much more out of it. I am NOT disappointed by the way. I ordered this for browsing.

4 out of 5 eggsArchos 101it

Pros: Price I picked up an open box for $199.00. Excellent Multimedia Player. Decent web browser. Froyo 2.2 Flash support. Plenty of ports micro usb, full size usb, mini hdmi, and micro SDHC slot. Easy to add Google and A*z#n App Store. Excellent battery life.

Cons: Froyo 2.2 not Gingerbread, 256MB ram every so often you need to kill background apps.

Other Thoughts: This is not an iPad! It does not try to be an iPad. If you want an iPad buy one. This device is replacing an iPod Touch 2G. There are plenty of apps and games for this device after you install Google Market. Market was easier to install than to get the Archos Apps Lib working. You can expand the memory on this device to 32GB. Has support for my external hard drive. Has a front facing camera for Skype. Sure I can't put it in my pocket like the touch but this device blows the iTouch away. Also it makes a pretty good pdf and ebook reader. So if you are looking for an affordable with a large 10.1 inch this is a good choice for a tinkerer. Android apps look very nice in Froyo on this screen so don't be afraid 2.2.

4 out of 5 eggsBest bang for the buck

Pros: Best value in a tablet, by far! Great battery life. Light weight - kick stand is awesome and usable feature. Surprisingly rugged; Having dropped it a few times with no substantial damage I realized that for what it costs it wouldn't matter much even if there had been. Although not unique to the Archos, being able to stream media files from Samba/windows shares on my media server is fantastic: plugged in some speakers used this device as a jukebox at daughter's graduation party slick and easy as could be. Best feature of all not an IPad or Apple product requiring the use of ITunes malware.

Cons: Light weight is a plus but some might think it feels cheap and couldn't be faulted. The materials used in construction are less substantial than most of competition but it's a trade-off for the low price and light weight.

Other Thoughts: First know that I support portables at a major northeastern university for a living including IPads, IPad 2, Motorola Xooms and this model Archos for faculty and staff that are provided to me by the institution so my experience level is extremely high. Each of these devices is available to me at all times and the Archos is the one most often in my possession when I leave the office or home primarily because of its weight and size combined with the fact that at this price point I don't have to be overly concerned about how I handle the unit - Not as flashy or substantial feeling as the Xooms or IPads never the less does everything they do just as well and doesn't need to be pampered. Can't help but notice that in most of the negative reviews there's a line included stating an IPads will be next choice; seems fishy to me since when given the chance to test them users I support rarely end up picking the IPads over the Androids, including the Archos, for their daily use. Fanboy lies?
