1 out of 5 eggsUnadvertised Limitations

Pros: The price point, battery capacity, simple and easy.

Cons: The documentation for the device doesn't provide much detail. Through experience I have found that the device only supports USB 2.0...that is to say that USB 1.1 devices I tried did NOT work. Also, USB 3.0 with backward compatibility did not work. I tried formatting these devices with FAT and FAT32 but it still failed. In these scenarios the AE400 recognized the device and it appears to be available via wifi but all reads and writes to the disk fail. I have searched for a firmware update, hoping that the vendor resolved the issue but have been unable to find any firmware updates. In my opinion this is a great idea but the solution is limited and support is limited.

2 out of 5 eggsA disappointment, but it works.

Pros: It works. The power bank is good for charging my devices. I had no use for the Hot-spot thing so can't comment on that. Good exterior design, small and compact.

Cons: It shutters A LOT when playing mkv videos. I was really hoping to use this to play movies. The player in the app needs to optimize some codecs. I don't want to convert my movies into another format so that it plays properly.

1 out of 5 eggsTypical Asian junk

Pros: Fantastic idea and functions. Replaces multiple "take-along" devices.

Cons: Shiny on the outside...not so shiny inside. Very common these days we seem to get products from overseas that have the look and feel of a quality US made product... but the in the end, the internal components are cheap and unreliable.
After 2 months the SD reader stopped functioning, and now the battery won't hold a charge for more than a day or two.

Manufacturer Response:

4 out of 5 eggsGood device in concept

Pros: Lithium Polymer Battery
Wireless Media Hub functionality
IOS & Andriod Free Apps
USB and SD Card Reader
Wireless client for Internet Pass-thru

Cons: Access via upnp is buggy with simultaneous access. The workaround is to use smb access to the media files. With the workaround, I was able to playback 4 different hidef video files without a hiccup.

Other Thoughts: Device has amazing potential. Make the firmware open source and let the community add more features such as muti filesystem support.

5 out of 5 eggsSlide Show Projector

Pros: It fits in your pocket without weighing it down but will power my iPad, also can back-up photos to my SmartPhone as well as my HDD or SSD, lately Iv'e been using it to send full height or full width photos very quickly to T. V. sets with nothing but the T. V. set's remote controller and the SD card that fits flush inside the reader.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I've got the aDATA microSD card reader (it barely sticks out of the USB port), I don't have a 120GB jump-drive or a 128GB SDHC card but I'll have need of a 128GB mSDXC card or two in September or October.

5 out of 5 eggsJack of all trades, master of all

Pros: + Big battery
+ Easy configuration
+ Built-in SD reader with SDXC support
+ App that works, unlike competition

Cons: - Can't access NTFS disks
- No Ethernet
- No WPS
- One storage device at a time

Other Thoughts: The ADATA AE400 is the fifth wireless hotspot device I have owned. The others are the D-Link DIR-505 and DIR-506L and the TP-Link TL-MR3020 and TL-MR3040. Like all of these, the AE400 can wirelessly share a USB storage device and can turn a wireless access point, such as at a hotel or coffee shop, into its own wireless hotspot with multiple clients (10 in the case of the AE400.) Like the D-Link DIR-506L and TP-Link TL-MR3040, the AE400 contains an internal rechargeable battery that can not only power the device independently but can also charge phones.

Unlike the D-Link and TP-Link devices, the ADATA AE400 did not begin life as a router and then have the other functions grafted on - while the AE400 does serve a router function, it can't be set up as a wireless repeater nor does it have an Ethernet jack to turn a wired connection into wireless. It also lacks nearly all of the multitudinous settings the typical router has - all you can configure is the SSID name and the wireless password. You don't even get a choice of encryption type - WPA2 is it (not that there's anything wrong with that.) If you need QOS settings, IP reservations, built-in firewall, etc., the ADATA doesn't have them.

What it does have that the others do not is a much larger internal battery, that I found could power not only an iPhone but also an iPad (though I expect an iPad would not get a lot of charge out of the AE400.) It also has a built-in SD card reader capable of reading SDHC and SDXC cards. This can be used independently of the other functions by connecting a USB cable to a computer. If you want to wirelessly serve storage, you have to choose between the SD slot and the USB connection, you can't use both at the same time. Neither will the AE400 work with a USB hub. While I did find that the AE400 would power a Seagate 1TB disk drive I had, it supports FAT and exFAT drives only, not NTFS.

When serving storage, the AE400 uses SMB/CIFS, not DLNA. Many video player apps will support SMB, but some I have run into make you pay extra for the feature. I used Goodplayer on iOS and it worked well. ADATA claims that it will serve 720p video simultaneously to 10 devices, 1080p video to 5. It certainly performed well when I tried it with two devices.

Like the D-Link devices, ADATA provides an app (iOS and Android) which can be used to upload, download and play files, as well as adjust settings on the AE400. The iOS app also allowed renaming, creation of new folders and deletion. It has a "move" function but I could not figure out how to use that. Unlike D-Link's app, the ADATA app works and doesn't crash if you look sideways at it.

If what you want is the ability to create your own WiFi hotspot, wirelessly serve media without requiring external power, and something that can double as a USB power source and SD reader, the AE400 is a great choice.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat quality

Pros: I've only owned this for a short time but given both the data and power storage functions this was an incredible bargain at $20 after rebate. It's also not a cheaply made one, some with higher capacity looks a little questionable which makes you wonder if the cells themselves are going to leak or something. At 5000mAh it's good for tablets as well as phones.

Cons: None especially at the price I paid.

Other Thoughts: If that same sale happens again I'm definitely getting another one. This is really nice and would make a great gift.
