1 out of 5 eggsJunk

This review is from: TRENDnet TV-IP551W 640 x 480 MAX Resolution RJ45 Wireless N Internet Camera

Pros: Setup was relatively easy.

Cons: Terrible video resolution and no connectivity outside of house

Other Thoughts: Don't waste you money on these. Even in ample lighting the video was bad. The main reason I bought this was to check in on the house during the day. The app worked on my phone fine while in the house but had no connectivity outside the house!

Manufacturer Response:

Hello,

We are sorry to hear that you have issues with the TV-IP551W. The maximum resolution for this model is 640 x 480. We also carry megapixel cameras with higher resolution and image quality, for example the TV-IP572WI. Placement of wireless hardware can greatly affect distance. Interference or the amount of obstructions may have prevented wireless connectivity. Typically exterior walls in a home are much more dense and you may need to install an exterior access point to cover that area.

Adrian

1 out of 5 eggsDefective Garbage

This review is from: TRENDnet TV-IP551W 640 x 480 MAX Resolution RJ45 Wireless N Internet Camera

Pros: decent image quality for a low res camera

Cons: Can't change admin password. If you try changing the admin password from 'admin' to anything else only the cam's main page will open showing only a still image. Every other page (network, users, image adj, etc) pops up a username and password box to which nothing works.

Other Thoughts: Shame on newegg for continuing to sell this. And I now have the joy of paying for return shipping charges.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello ITFarmer,

We are sorry to hear that you had an issue with the TV-IP551W. The admin password can be changed and the camera is not supposed to work in that fashion. It sounds like the unit may be defective. If possible we would recommend that you apply the latest firmware update to the unit and then reset it to factory defaults. If it continues to operate in the fashion described it should be replaced.

The TV-IP551W carries a warranty and we will be happy to replace it under warranty. Please email Adrian@trendnet.com and we will have someone assist you with a warranty request as soon as possible. Please include a link to this review.

Adrian

4 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: TRENDnet TV-IP551W 640 x 480 MAX Resolution RJ45 Wireless N Internet Camera

Pros: Excellent picture

Cons: I purchased two 81-012-059 Trend/TV-1P551W R. After 30 minutes with tech support, I was able to see the two cameras on my smart phone as long as I was in my own house. I got off the telephone with Tech support why offered a 6 month and 12 month plan during which everything that I have electronically is covered including allowing me to view my cameras anywhere in the world and on my desk tower computer. Why this is not covered in the literature so I could do it I is troubling. I believe I should not have to pay any additional information to active these cameras. THEREFORE, please advise me where I return these cameras as they arrived different from what was offered.

5 out of 5 eggsOK For The Price

This review is from: TRENDnet TV-IP551W 640 x 480 MAX Resolution RJ45 Wireless N Internet Camera

Pros: The Shell Shocker price ($22) was too good to pass up. Its not 720p but pretty good for a 640x480 ip cam. Forgetting the great price I paid it still is pretty decent for what it is. The audio is pretty good too.

Cons: Nothing worth mentioning

Other Thoughts: Focus by turning the lens. The distance in video is 3 feet. The original feed was just a touch better/sharper. The sound is coming from a Bluetooth Vivitar VIV1803 Shower Speaker bought on Newegg.

1 out of 5 eggsGreat buy poor service by Trendnet

This review is from: TRENDnet TV-IP551W 640 x 480 MAX Resolution RJ45 Wireless N Internet Camera

Pros: great price for a nanny cam for the dogs. TrendNet is a poor customer service company.

Cons: Absolutely horrible service from TRENDNet, horrible phone skills and an overall bad experience. I called them to get support for my purchase (4 cameras), not only was I on hold for 30 minutes but I was later asked for my number so they could reach me at a later time. No one has called yet. Not only was the guy on phone uninteligable , but he was also clearly not in the customer service industry. I will never buy anything TrendNet again and will tell my friends about it as well. If they need someone to learn from, have them call LaView customer service.

Other Thoughts: This product may be very good, I don"t know. I have yet to be contacted by TrendNet for customer support.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Nick,

We are sorry to hear about your experience with our support services. Please email Adrian@trendnet.com and we will have someone assist you with the cameras as soon as possible. Please include your contact information and a link to this review.

3 out of 5 eggsDecent starter IP camera

This review is from: TRENDnet TV-IP551W 640 x 480 MAX Resolution RJ45 Wireless N Internet Camera

Pros: Low cost, Plenty of basic options built into the camera. Resolution is what you would expect- color is fine.

Cons: Latest firmware allows the wifi's password to be seen instead of a bunch of "*" . Tried using the TrendNetPro software but is too complicated for me, but not needed. It is fairly easy to be able to see your camera on your home network, but in order to see it on a phone or tablet away from your home network, you need to set up port forwarding on your router and then on the camera. I had help from a friend and was able to get it to work via a web browser or on my Android phone. The latest Trendnetview Android software keeps asking me to install the latest firmware for the camera, which is older than the firmware that Trendnet sent me for the camera, which is not yet on their website to be downloaded. Can't change the user name and the password too. If you change the user name then you can only use the default password...

Other Thoughts: I found Trendnet to be responsive to my emails for help- best to email Adrian who monitors Trendnet posts on Newegg. After being able to use this camera I purchased another Trendnet IP camera from Newegg that has the zoom tilt swivel.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Geekdad,

We apologize for the issues you are having with the camera. The latest firmware should be 1.06.08. This is the latest found on our website. I have tested a camera here and was able to use a unique username and password on the unit without any issues. The current Android app is TRENDnetVIEW 1.4.0. Please ensure this is the version you have installed. Port forwarding is required as your router has a firewall that you need to provide access through. We do have cloud cameras available that do not require this amount of setup for easier installation. If you continue to have issues please email Adrian@trendndet.com. We would like to sort these issues out for you as soon as possible. Please include your contact information and a link to this review.

5 out of 5 eggsMediocre Product, EXCELLENT CUSTOMER Service

This review is from: TRENDnet TV-IP551W 640 x 480 MAX Resolution RJ45 Wireless N Internet Camera

Pros: Regarding the product: wireless N speeds, easy setup
Regarding TRENDNET: customer service

Cons: Regarding the product: wireless N radio
Regarding TRENDNET: none

Other Thoughts: I purchsed two of these on sale and they're actually the first IP cams I've purchased for the house. Setup was very easy and straightforward since I know exactly how I wanted to set them up (no DDNS needed for each individual cam; just did port forwarding through my router). I can see though how this may be a daunting task for someone that might have less knowledge in networking. There are a lot of options available during setup so I can see where people might be overwhelmed. Having that many setup options are either good or bad depending on your skill level.

If I didn't have such a pleasant experience with Trendnet customer service, I would've easily rated this 1 egg. I set both of the cams up and both had bad noise for both audio and video. There was a lot of static on the audio and the video had multiple lines across the picture. I read through many reviews and most of them are right regarding this. I contacted customer service and it seems they may have been aware of an issue. To make a long store short, they quickly rectified the situation. I am up and running with minor issues. Based on that experience, I may look into more Trendnet cams in the future. As for this model, I probably won't buy this model again but will go with a more expensive Trendnet cam that might not have this issue.
