3 out of 5 eggsConstantly switches between day and night mode when in a dark room

Pros: The higher then normal resolution for a cam in this price range.
Can be setup completely without installing any software on your pc (web based config).
Is compatible with IP Cam Viewer for IOS/Android.
Can connect directly to the camera's RSTP stream using VLC media player.

Cons: The light sensor that controls the day/night mode appears to be too sensitive. If you place it too close to an object or person while in night mode, the reflection of the IR light will cause the camera to switch to day mode. We originally installed the camera pointed down at the baby's crib about 4 feet from his mattress but this was too close and the camera would switch between day and night mode all night long. Even if you place the camera in a dark room and walk up in front of it, the IR light reflecting off of you will cause it to switch to day mode. Day mode results in a black image when in a dark room. You then have to wait a few mins before the camera switches back to night mode. I actually had to put masking tape over the IR LEDs in order to correct this, however less IR light results in a grainier night image.

Other Thoughts: Asante tech support was fairly responsive but offered no help in fixing the day/night switching issue. I will probably try a different brand camera for my next purchase.

4 out of 5 eggs3rd update

Pros: Good resolution.... actually great, considering the low cost.
Good tech support... got to know tech on first-name basis! Am adding an egg due to recognition of operator error, but leaving one off for poor instructions in manual.

Cons: Until you have used this camera for a while, expect to call tech support a few times. This really is not so much a con as it is a reflection of the complexity of its features. It is loaded! You get a lot for your money.
I have yet to be able to get it to communicate with my NAS. This is my challenge, not attributable to the camera, except a little more instructional help would be appreciated.

Other Thoughts: First, my previous report of the camera "locking up" was inaccurate. I did set it to email me alerts and got hundreds a day because I didn't realize an overhead paddle fan (out of view of the video) was triggering motion detection by the camera. (Smartbot is trumped by the PIR feature of the camera.) However, the reason I couldn't reset the camera was due to DHCP... the wireless address needed to be reserved in the router settings. Once lost, I had to be onsite to reset it. I use this camera in a remote location 1200 miles away. Expensive lesson. However, since I bought a second camera in anticipation of replacing a defective unit, I now have two good working cameras and considering a third.

5 out of 5 eggsvery robust 1.2M camera

Pros: This is my 2nd one after I got one few months ago. I have a Macbook Pro and Airport extreme router. No problems with setup... The smartbot instructions talks about works great. Connect the camera to your router and use the IP cam viewer app to set up the camera. Then go the camera web site and enter the advanced setup. The instructions do a great job of outlining these steps. Some review complained about Wifi setting. The camera must be wirelessly configured while connected to the Airport extreme. In the advance setup for the camera or using smartbot wifi page – scan wifi router then enter the password for the router. Make sure your wireless security protocol is correct and then save. You should then be able to disconnect the network cable and let the camera auto connect.

Cons: I am figuring out how to run SAMBA without computer. You need to understand samba well on the network so that from advanced page could be set up quickly. The document is not clear until I called support. But support is very helpful and walk me through it.

2 out of 5 eggsMeh...

Pros: Great resolution, software looks good but the camera never lived long enough to really check it out. Even though it died in about 2-3 months, I'll give it an extra egg because it seemed like it had some good features, wasn't terribly expensive and others had some luck. YMMV, I guess.

Cons: Tech support and RMA.

If you think you're going to return this thing you better brace yourself for an up hill battle. You better keep every twist tie, plastic bag, cardboard box... EVERYTHING or they'll just laugh at you when you try and return it.

This one will probably just go in the trash. Live and learn.

Other Thoughts: We install surveillance cameras professionally and this was bought as a product evaluation. Needless to say, a dead unit that you can't get tech support or an RMA on... I have to give it an EPIC FAIL for a grade.

Too bad. I've had a long history of buying Asante products. They were one of the first manufacturers to really have a large product offering for Macintosh accessories in the early 1990's. Pretty high quality and a company that's easy to work with.

5 out of 5 eggsVery Impressed

Pros: It was up and running in no time! You do need to plug it into an ethernet port initially like the instructions say. After initial set up, you can change it to wireless.

When you are viewing the cam from your local network on your iPhone or iPad using the IP Cam Viewer, the video and audio comes in very quickly. When you are outside of your network, be patient. It can take up to seconds for the video to start depending on your broadband networks uplink bandwidth. This is 720p level be careful not floor the outbound.

ProsBriefly, some of the features I love:
* iPhone and Android “IP cam Viewer” apps for remote viewing
* video quality is sharp
* Smartbot is amazingly smart but need a PC to host it
* Ease of set-up

Cons: * It would be cool if they made an outdoor version of this cam. I use it on my covered front porch. I wouldn't use it outside unprotected.
* It needs to be plugged into an outlet. It would be nice if they made a battery accessory for the 5V 1A.

4 out of 5 eggsComplex setup with very good results

Pros: Price, build quality, video quality, but the icing on the cake is the SOFTWARE. The software is magical. I've had to call Asante support a few times. As a tech who frequently calls support desks for many different vendors, Asante's support is definitely above average.

Cons: Hard to setup. An absolute nightmare when you have to throw in the towel and connect an ethernet cable and reconfigure one of these, remotely, in a production environment.

Other Thoughts: I support about 10 of these cameras in various locations, in various setups. The largest setup is 5 cameras. I've had that system installed for nearly a year. Very rarely do the camera's need to be power cycled or reconnected...several straight months of uptime.

5 out of 5 eggsDecent camera

Pros: This is my first security camera. I bought it for two reasons. To catch the neighbors dog in my yard and to experiment before buying a full blown multi camera, dvr based system. This camera seems fine for a simple stand alone setup. I haven't used all it's features. Amazingly, I found a lot of features in it. I use it to take snapshots, and that's working exactly how I wanted it along with the smartbot set up.

As stated earlier, my only downfall is this is indoor camera where I found they did not put IR filter on the len. Then again, it's a security camera and not meant to be a pro camera photographer. I wouldn't let that stop you from buying it though. The picture and video quality is actually pretty good !

Cons: The night vision works pretty well actually but 5-8 fts. To view out a window to your yard at night is no no. The picture and video quality is actually pretty good ! The LED's are not powerful enough, and you get flashback from the window glass. But indoors for a room, it actually works better than I thought.

2 out of 5 eggsGreat when it works

Pros: Excellent picture

Cons: Consistently will forget and drop wireless connection to router. Then I have to run setup software again. It didn't start until after the 2nd month of ownership. The setup process is not as user friendly as it should be.

3 out of 5 eggsGood for the price

Pros: It's the highest-res I could find anywhere close to this price. Is pre-configured for use with several popular dynamic DNS services. overall pic quality isn't what I'd call great in absolute terms, but well above comparably-priced devices.

Cons: FTP upload doesn't support special characters in the ftp password. If you intend to auto upload to an ftp site, you'll have to make sure you assign a WEAK password to your ftp account. -1 star.

Colors tend to be washed out. Outside views look fairly accurate on cloudy days, but look dull on sunny days. Very dark spots in the field of view have lots of artifacts.

It worked well with iPhone and iPad and IE on the PC. Did not work well with Firefox. The video image was frequently corrupted, showing an image with just 2 colors. This seemed more likely a Firefox problem than a camera problem.

The English (.pdf) manual is poorly translated from Chinese, and filled with insightful comments along the lines of, "the LED switch option changes the LED switch setting." (which actually meant, "the LED switch option lets you enable or disable the activity indicator LED on the front of the camera.")

Other Thoughts: Resolution isn't high enough to make out a license plate number in the driveway outside from a second-story window.

While you can configure most of the camera options directly from your browser, you must install their software to configure motion detection rules.

A tip for those having trouble configuring port forwarding through their routers: be sure to assign a static IP address for the camera (that is, in the camera disable DHCP and enter a permanent IP address. On the router, it doesn't hurt to add a mac address assignment as well). This ensures that the camera's IP address doesn't drift away from the address you've set up in port forwarding. This is a good general rule, not specific to this camera.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Cam!

Pros: - Great Cam, clear HD quality.
- Took just a few minutes to set up
- Smartbot software is outstanding!
- Only 100 bucks!

Cons: - Can be delayed several seconds if recording on 720p. But that's given

Other Thoughts: Ignore any other low ratings considering the fact that they have no idea what they are talking about.
