Where/how do the cameras get there power from?

For clarification, the cameras are POE enabled (powered over ethernet cable). The NVR Recorder has 9 ethernet ports, one is to connect to you network, the other 8 are POE enabled, so the power rides along the ethernet cable directly to the cameras. If your cable is too short or too long, just run your own basic CAT5/6 ethernet cable, no splitters, or special siamese power cables needed!

Is portable hard drive works with this NVR ?

The usb port is for saving recordings to a flash drive. Honestly i do not know if you can hook a drive up to it to record to, but the menu does show an option to record to multiple drives, but this unit may be using the same firmware from higher priced two-drive units, and two SATA drives are not be available for this unit.
