4 out of 5 eggsGood value for the money so far

Pros: Cheap, quiet, loads relatively quickly compared to other blu-ray players I've seen. No obtrusive bright LED lights when on. DivX supported.

Cons: Remote not compatible with my multi-function wands. Plays DivX, but only in standard def, not HD resolutions (need to master as AVCHD disk if you want to watch HD).

Other Thoughts: Bought the LG as a second player for the bedroom, has worked reliably for 6+ months so far. Not surprising these inexpensive players break down quicky (the entry-level Samsung has many similar complaints). Don't forget good airflow (passive cooling only on unit, as with many others). Heat death likely an issue for many who stack in cramped areas. Of course, if it had a fan, I suppose everyone would complain about the noise!
I don't get all the complaints about lack of HDMI cables (what do you expect at this price? it's not like the competitors offer it - pick one up a discount computer store). Also don't get the complaints about slow loading - the LG is faster than my main second-gen Panasonic unit, and faster than others I've seen. First-gen BD players - now those were slow. And the need to update firmware is common on all BD players, due to emerging technology. Frankly, a lot of the gripping on this unit seems to stem from not being familiar with bu-ray.

4 out of 5 eggsGood quality and price, but not perfect

Pros: The best thing about this unit is the price. Seems to be of very good quality for how little it costs.

Cons: This thing is very wide and not very deep. It is a real odd-ball when trying to stack it with "normal" sized components. Manufactures have been making component boxes for like 50 years now, can't we settle on a standard depth and width already?

One more con which really rubs me wrong is that this box only comes with composite cables. This is an HD device LG, if you are going to send me a cable it better be HDMI. No one needs composite cables, everyone has stacks of them. I probably have enough still left in the original package to be your supplier as a matter of fact.

Other Thoughts: Minus 1 egg for being and odd size and not coming with an HDMI cable.

1 out of 5 eggsDO NOT BUY

Pros: At least turns on?

Cons: You need shear luck to play a dvds or bluerays. Cannot play scratched DVDs not even tiny scratched ones. Will not play newer bluerays, ERMMM Avatar.

Other Thoughts: I bought this back in September 2009, it played every blueray and dvd just find. Now its been 10 months and I'd be lucky to get a blueray to play on this.

1 out of 5 eggsDO NOT BUY

Pros: Worked great up until the 4 month mark. Now it doesn't at all. :(

Cons: See "Other thoughts" to hear me whine. About the product itself: My kid's Fisher Price toys feel more sturdy than this. The tray that ejects is so flimsy, I feel like I"m playing operation when I put the disc in. But don't worry, that won't break it. Evidently these things brick themselves after 4 months of use.

Other Thoughts: Almost exactly 4 months after I received it, it stopped reading Blu-Ray Discs. Still reads dvd's though. Tech support told me after an hour and half of waiting to download the latest firmware from their website which is BD.8.16.059.A. With latest firmware uploaded, still having same issue, had to call Tech Support and waste another hour on hold for them to tell me they have to mail me a disc (as in snail mail) with another firmware version. "This one should fix the issue" I asked the dude to just give me a link he said no and went on to say that he doesn't actually know if the firmware is available but they'll mail me a disc of whatever they have and said the disc should take 10 days or more. I have already invested 4 hours into trying to troubleshoot this junk. Is it worth it? How much is your time worth? How much will have I have to pay to send back to fix if the disc doesn't work? Spend more money and get something that will last. You difinitely get what you pay for.

1 out of 5 eggscheap made

Pros: that it plays blue ray for 90 bucks? thats about it

Cons: regular Av jacks are sad, no HD connects or even HDMI for that matter so you are trading down big quality for a cheap piece of c**p

Other Thoughts: use it as a trim tray than anything else cause this sucks

2 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Cheap blueray player and upscales standard DVD's to 1080p

Cons: Tried to play Avatar on blueray and it wouldn't play even after updating the firmware. I'm going to use the player as a second one for the bedroom. It is an ealier model.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat budget player

Pros: Small and simple to operate, easy to update firmware, excellent video quality for standard DVDs

Cons: A little slow

Other Thoughts: This is an excellent budget Blu-Ray disc player, and a surprisingly good DVD player. The unit is thin in height, quite short in depth, and STANDARD width, the same as all other audio/video components (I have it stacked on a Toshiba DVD Recorder and Panasonic DVD player and it is the same width).

Updating the firmware is as easy as downloading the files, putting them on a USB thumb drive, and inserting in the USB port on the front of the player. If the update dialog does not appear immediately, then you are missing a needed update file. There are 2 files required (you have to download the international update which consists of 2 files and replace the file with the same name in the US update).

Discs load a little slowly, but don't expect a fast processor in a budget player, and you'll be fine. The user interface is simple and elegant, based on a version of Linux.

The unit does get quite hot during play, so I recommend giving it some space underneath.

4 out of 5 eggsupdate firmware for Avatar

Pros: Google search on "lg bd270 update" You'll need to update the firmware to play the br version of Avatar. Follow the directions and be patient. I used the dvd media, not the usb, version of the update. There are 2 rom files, the 270 seemed to understand what to do. And they are labeled bd350. Wierd but works ok.

Cons: Seems a bit slow to load and start blu ray movies.

Other Thoughts: If you try to play Avatar br version without the update, you'll have to cut power to restart.
