3 out of 5 eggsDecent Speakers

Pros: Bought this during the Holiday sales for around 280, setup was straight forward, dont even need directions really but they were easy to follow, Sounds great when i watch movies sports and video games, much better then just tv speakers.
Wireless rear speakers

Cons: The subwoofer doesnt have as much kick as i thought it would, mainly a concern for music.
Lately the left side has been cutting in and out and it has to be something internal for both the back and front to lose the left audio

Other Thoughts: As for those who list the wires on the rear speakers to the rear amp, how do you expect them to play, batteries? of course theres wires somewheres, just not running across the wall or under the carpet

5 out of 5 eggsGreat system

Pros: Great surround system, easy hookup, wires are color coded. This system really pumps out the volume. This thing will be blasting on 20! Who knows what things will shake at a higher level. It has 3 sound modes: auto, music, and movies. It goes great with my Samsung LCD HD 37 inch 1080P television and my PS3. It also plays audio CDs and DVDs. It will up convert your standard DVDs and show them in 1080P. Simply connecting an optical audio cable from your television to the optical slot on the back of the Sony Bravia receiver will take care of all of your surround sound solutions. No need to run extra cables to the back of the receiver from other sources such as a blu-ray player or gaming system because once you run the cable from the tv to the receiver, anything playing on the television will play through all the surround speakers. But you must use an optical cable (haven't tried a coaxial cable because my Samsung doesn't have a coaxial audio cable slot) instead of an RCA cable.

Cons: I tried hooking up my Ipod touch 3G to the Digital Media port (Ipod dock), but after I read the DMPort manual, it only supports Generations one and two, not 3. Wish Sony would make a compatible Ipod dock for the Ipod touch 3G.

I would add that a sound mode for video games and sports would be nice.

Other Thoughts: This thing also has FM and AM radio stations that play crisp and clear. The function button makes it easy to switch audio to whatever source you want surround sound from. Remember as mentioned before, use an optical cable from your HD television to the receiver to get surround sound from all 6 speakers because you will only get it from 3 speakers using an RCA cable. Overall, great system and a must have if you own a HD television, gaming system, and or/blu ray/DVD player.

5 out of 5 eggsSONY DAV-HDX589W 5.1-Channel DVD Home Theater System

Pros: Great sound quality at an affordable price. Easy setup.
Wireless rear speakers, tho not totally wireless help to create a fast easy installation.

Cons: Limited inputs for other devices. Can't see the Display from across my small room, might work better for you if you have very good eyesight. The rear speakers are not entirely wireless, you will still have wires running from rear amp to the 2 rear speakers and a power cord from the amp.

Other Thoughts: I can't believe I am watching the same TV. With the DVD player's upscaling, my older DVD's have never looked so good and the sound is like being in a movie theater.
This system works great in my relatively small room (15'x18') but I have the volume turned up to about about 80%. Might be a little underpowered for very large room, if you like really booming sound.
I am very pleased with this product and would recommend it to others.
I have to give Newegg five stars also for their speed of delivery and free shipping on this 55lb very large box.

5 out of 5 eggsNice for price

Pros: Great looking system, finish matched my LG 42" perfectly. Stand alone front speakers look great, and yet dont stand out too much. 5 disc changer is really smooth and fast. Wireless rear amp makes setting up a larger room much less complicated and more attractive. All speakers pick up their sound channels well and have a pretty good midrange despite their smaller size. Bass really hits hard compared to my former unit. HDMI signal is 1080p crisp . Unit loads DVDs very fast, and responds to remote commands instantly- none of that: 'Operation cannot be performed yet' cr@p I experienced with a Ph!l!ps unit.

Cons: Proprietary wiring. Sound is VERY directional; unless you have speakers set up perfectly, you will find yourself constantly increasing the volume. LED display on unit is a bit too simple and small. Remote seems unnecessarily complicated, but main functions are easily done. Did not come with wall/ceiling mounts. VERY difficult to configure the slight delay between live TV and surround. Lack of inputs/outputs almost cost this unit an egg, but I assume a modern TV will solve that problem for most.

Other Thoughts: I have to run mine at 70% max volume from less than 9 feet away to hear it over conversations elsewhere in the house.
Despite the cons, you will enjoy this unit for the cost.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: I like how you do not have to run any wires to the rear amp. This is my first surround sound purchase. I am satisfied so far. Still have a lot to learn just about this system in general.

Cons: You may not have to run wires to the rear amp, but you do have to run wires from the amp to the speakers. Works pretty good though.

5 out of 5 eggsWould buy again

Pros: DVD upscales great. Just watched "The Fifth Element" and looked and sounds great - can not see how Blu Ray would be much better.

Cons: Sound seems underpowed, have to crank it up more then expected. Other wise great.

Other Thoughts: Would buy again.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat System for the price

Pros: Easy setup, clean, clear sound, lots of functionality, slim speakers, sufficient volume, good balance between all speakers. For the price this system is a great value and sounds great. Wireless rear speakers work great with no static or pops/clicks. Receiver is low profile and fits well in any entertainment center.

Cons: Low-tech LED display, small diameter speaker wires, volume may not be sufficient for very large rooms (my room is 18' wide x 25' long and this system is just right), limited inputs for other devices (i.e. blue ray player, game system, etc.)

Other Thoughts: I would purchase this again in a heartbeat. It is exactly what I wanted. I overcame the limited inputs by utilizing the multiple inputs on my TV for the devices and using an optical audio connection to the surround system.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat system for the cash

Pros: Very easy setup. Pretty much idiot proof.

DVD player upscales incredibly. Just watched Revenge of the Sith, and it was indistinguishable from a Blu Ray.

Great surround sound quality. Big improvement from my old Panasonic SA-HT740.

Has all the inputs youll likely need.

Comes with an IPod dock, if thats your thing.

Cons: Feels kinda underpowered. You really have to crank it up almost to max to get a good theater sound. And that is worrysome because you arent talking about the biggest speakers.

Proprietary wires. Really Sony, couldnt you just use standard wires? If something happens, youll have to buy new wires from Sony.

Remote is unneccesarily complicated. When you have a button that says Display, a button that says ...Display, and a button that has the secondary function of Display and all three do different things, thats too complicated.

Other Thoughts: Overall I give five stars because this is the best value for the money you will find for a quality home theater system. I would definitely recommend this unit to friends and family, and just anyone who wants quality for a great price.

4 out of 5 eggsSounds great for the price

Pros: I previously installed home theater and audio as a profession, and found myself buying this when it was on sale for my living room. When paired with a wall screen projector and well placed speakers, this system is very dynamic sounding. Not too strong in any one category, balanced. For $330ish the bang for the buck sticks out.

I was surprised to see the iPod dock in the box, I did not know that was part of the system. A good surprise, haven't used it yet, but set it up anyways for future use.

Cons: Coaxial input broke off some time during shipping. Opened the box, pulled everything out and found the threaded input loose on the bottom of the box and an open spot on the back of the DVD receiver where it used to be soldered onto the board/pressed onto the I/O panel. Sony has been great to me all my life, hopefully this was an isolated event.

5 out of 5 eggsSony DAV-HDX589W

Pros: I've had this system for almost a year and everytime someone comes to watch a movie or game they are blown away.
+ Easy setup, since it is a 'home-theater-in-a-box"
+ When hooked up to the right source (optical) it sounds amazing.
+ Ipod hook-up sounds clear
+ Built in DVD player upscales incredibly and when you turn the sound up you forget you are still in your own home.
+ Games on Xbox (Battlefield: BC, DeadSpace) sound incredible.

Cons: - Non HD/multi channel audio singals don't sound very well.
- Needs more input/outpus. 1x optical and 1x RCA inputs is very inconvient.
- No real way to adjust the bass.

Other Thoughts: Unfortunately I didn't buy this from newegg.

I oringally had a cheaper system but it just didn't cut it so I returned it and forked out the extra money. I am so glad I did!
