1 out of 5 eggsNever again Sony

Pros: It looks nice. It has tons of features. Sound through RCA and HDMI sounded great. I'd assume the optical would too.

Cons: This was purchased specifically for the HDMI pass through; which was a complete disaster. The on-screen menu and horrible user manual made it even more disappointing.

Other Thoughts: Summation: Unit randomly powers itself on and off, even going into a continuous on/off loop and sounding like a turn signal in an old car (Click-click.... click-click....). Unit repeatedly dropped the HDMI connection to the TV, even after changing the cables. BD player picture stops displaying, but sound continues. Item did seem to work well with the Roku, in the limited time I tried. I managed to watch a whole movie with the HDMI dropping. Radio reception is unacceptable, regardless of antenna used. Remote control, set-up software and set-up manual is ridiculously confusing and hard to use.

I cannot fully describe my disappointment with this product. I was extremely leery of purchasing anything made by Sony, due to their reputation of the last decade for making inferior products, only slightly better than the no-name Chinese branded products. I felt that since this was a mid-upper level device, that the cost driven inferior components inside of the assembly, would be kept to a minimum. I was wrong.

I currently have a Comcast HD cable box, and LG BD player and a Roku 3 box; all of which are connected to my Vizio 46" 1080P TV using HDMI. I have had this arrangement for a few years, without ever having a single issue. My previous receiver did not have HDMI pass through; which combined with the 7.2 capability, is what attracted me to this unit.

I removed the receiver from the box and connected it to my speakers and my devices. Upon initial startup, the "Set Up" screen was frozen. At first I suspected it was an issue with the remote control, as it worked to power the unit on, but nothing was happening otherwise. After flipping through several pages of the Set-Up Guide looking for an answer, I decided to restart the unit in hopes that it was just an anomaly.

After restarting it, the unit began to randomly power itself on and off, once going into a continuous on/off loop; again requiring a restart. Once I did get it to start up, it began to drop the HDMI out connection (to the TV), even after changing the HDMI cable several times. While using the BD player, the picture stopped displaying after approximately 20-30, but the sound continued, proving the it unit was still receiving sound through the HDMI port. Radio reception is the worst I have ever seen; failing to even receive a signal from two of the three stations that broadcast from less than 10 miles away; regardless of antenna used.

I will be fully steering clear of Sony products from now on.

3 out of 5 eggsWorks but has problems

Pros: Sound is excellent. Really good surround sound ( I have seven speaker system: floor (2), center (1) and 4 ceiling speakers. Excellent does not begin to describe it: even my wife is impressed.

Cons: 1. After my remote turns all pieces off--cable box, tv and receiver--receiver turns back on and must be turned off again. Why? Who knows.
2. No switch to turn off speakers. So when headphones are plugged in external speakers are off with no way of activating them again.
3. Menu system is not very intuitive.
4. I am running computer and cable box thru receiver to one HDMI to tv (new Samsung.) Occasionally tv blanks out even though audio continues. A tv problem? A receiver problem? I have been unable to do anything but shut everything down and reboot everything.

Other Thoughts: The power issues mean that one remote control is not possible. I have to have the tv, receiver and cable box remotes available at all times. This does not make for a happy wife.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome

Pros: Best bang for the buck at time of purchase. Very easy to setup and use.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: It's everything I want in a receiver without all the nonsense stuff I do not.
