5 out of 5 eggsOptical input supports surround

Pros: Great sound quality. Easy setup with color coded wires and simple instructions. "Auto-surround" feature (when turned on) automatically detects the audio source (stereo, dolby digital, etc) and sets it for you.

Cons: Fewer inputs compared to most other receivers. Remote is small and has tiny buttons. But set to it "Auto-surround" and program one of your other remotes to control it, problem solved. The speaker wire supplied w/ the unit was too short for the rear surround speaker, despite being up in a small room.

Other Thoughts: To Joecool (a few reviews down) regarding the optical input and his surround problem. I recommended this system to my Uncle and set it up for him using the optical input for surround. The surround sound worked well through the optical input from the best i could tell at the time. It's been a month since I set it up, so I wanted to be double sure. Therefore, I contacted Pioneer customer support and they verified today that the optical input does indeed support dolby surround sound.

5 out of 5 eggsNot half bad, great deal

Pros: I would rate this sound system as a great buy. I put's out some pretty good sound, and with a bit of tweaking the bass is pretty good. It was fairly simple to set up too. Great price too.

Cons: Can't think of any. May not be an audiophile's dream though.

Other Thoughts: Good buy for a college student with a small room, like me.

5 out of 5 eggsreplaced computers logi 5.1

Pros: this thing puts out 100 watts logitech system was rated at 70 but this thing blows it away for sure. small speaker size but great sound. sub is very accurate compared to my logi system. and very full. lots of settings to make you happy with dts or dd. currently running dts from my optical out on my creative sound card. works beautifully. 2 channel 24 bit 96000hz from my computer. creative card helps with crystalizer and cmss 3d.

Cons: i don't know if this was my computers fault or the receivers fault but it didn't pick up my flash sound at all at first. no you tube. no flash applications whatsoever but i left this thing on overnight and it kind of fixed itself. just weird.

Other Thoughts: i have a pretty big room for a bed room (i like to think) and this thing fills up my room pretty good. fit 2 hdvs in here to which this receiver is hooked up to. one 40" 1080p and a 19" 720p along with my computer. i'm happy with it. for this price you can't really complain. the receivers settings in conjunction with my creative sound card work very well. others might not be happy with the tweaks they are able by with just the receiver but it was easy to work around for me. great for computer speakers....if you have optical out it's pretty much a no brainer. take advantage of it.

4 out of 5 eggsgreat for the money

Pros: Cant beat it for the money.
I got it here on newegg for 169.99 shipped.

Sound is ok. It was as I expected for an inexpensive unit.

Cons: There is only 1 optical audio in and it is the CD in.
The unit does not decode Dolby digital or DTS through this port. You must use the Digital Coaxil in to get Dolby Digital and DTS decoding. I had to get a opticlal to coaxil converter for 25.00 to get surround sound. My Tv only outputs digital audio through optical. You will be ok if you have dgital coax outs on your devices that you want surround sound decoding.

Other Thoughts: I have no idea why they would make the only optical in a CD in, since CD is only Left Right channel. It makes no sense to me.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat sound! Great price!

Pros: Great stereo system. One of the cheaper ones out there. It seems like it has a million options at first until you get the hang of it. Came with all the accessories.
I don't know what other people were talking about when they said that the sub was underpowered or lagging. It sounds great!
I also like the different settings for the surround sound. You can choose between game, music, movie, or generic.
It has 3 digital inputs and 2 analog inputs for future expansion and one analog output as well.
Basic setup is relatively straightforward. It comes with a nice quick-start guide that is very useful if you don't know what your doing.

Cons: I now see what everybody else is talking about. The remote is too small for the amount of features that are packed into it. It also takes a good bit of tweaking to get it to sound right. Not really a big deal. You learn to live with it.
If you have any dust around, this thing will attract it. It has a glossy front on the receiver that always seems to have fingerprints on it as well. If you have it in a cabinet, these problems should not be an issue.
The receiver seems to put out a good bit of heat. That can be a bad thing if you don't give it enough ventilation.
The speaker wire that came with it was 22 AWG. It works fine unless your conscience needs you to replace it with something better. The wire is also white, which gets a little annoying at times.

Other Thoughts: I can't seem to get it to handle 192 kHz. Oh well. Not like 92 isn't high enough. All said and done, I would definitely recommend this to a friend if I knew they had enough patience to mess around with it a little bit to set it up.
If you don't feel like running wires to the back of the room for the surround speakers, this system also comes with brackets so you can attach the front and rear speakers together and the receiver will "simulate" surround sound using 3.1.
The packaging was average. If the tape stayed secure, the inside was great. Everything was in styrofoam and there were cardboard fillers to eliminate the empty gaps. The box was heavy! It weighed somewhere around 45 pounds. It was very awkward to carry.

5 out of 5 eggsNice...

Pros: Price, sound (for money)

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: For $200 you cannot ask for anything more in a 5.1 system. If you do you are just plain crazy. This deal is amazing for anyone on a budget, and the sound that comes from the system is very nice. Just be aware since you aren't spending 2g's do not expect Bose quality sound. The construction is solid, as I would expect from Pioneer, and of course NewEgg rocks!

3 out of 5 eggsGood if you're on a budget

Pros: I bought it on sale, so it was right in my price range. Quite configurable, and handles the codecs I wanted. Front audio input is nice for MP3 player use. The speakers are compact enough to hang from my dryrock walls with no anchors (though I don't recommend this course of action). Arrived quickly, just like all the products I order from Newegg.

Cons: Sound is just adequate. The included speaker cable is poor quality. The subwoofer is just too weak; even when I turn the sub volume way up, the active subwoofer that came with my $70 Logitech PC speakers blow this one out of the water. Doesn't have many inputs and no video throughputs, though I knew this when purchasing.

Other Thoughts: DO NOT buy this system if you can afford something better. The little bit of money you spend now will show in the performance. I live in a tiny bedroom with many other housemates, so this system will serve me fine, but if you can upgrade, by all means do so.
