5 out of 5 eggsEggcellent Receiver!

Pros: I upgraded from a Pioneer Elite VSX-90TXV to this Onkyo TX-NR5007 a couple years ago, and couldn't be any happier with results over-all.

Mostly and originally because of the HDMI audio and connectivity I would gain, but I gained more than just that. Toroidal transformer inside for the amplifier was one of them, the power output has been impressive. This could push my larger speakers /better/ than the older Pioneer.

Granted, I always used an external amp for my main fronts, which makes the pre-amp outputs mighty handy for on this receiver. I still use full-range floor standing speaker towers in my setup. Not the skinny towers you see today.

I'm also quite pleased with having S-video still for certain game consoles I have, part of another reason why I chose Onkyo because they still offered it when I bought this model. Plus a Photo stage which works well for my old Turn Table.

I love the available surround sound modes, but for music I listen to Stereo mode or sometimes DTS Neo 6 music DSX.

Cons: HDMI Board does get hot, so I always ended up keeping a fan on top of it, even though it's not in any cabinet of sorts. I always tend to play it safe with my audio equipment.

I do wish Onkyo would include a Optical out on their receivers, and a main 12 volt trigger that turns on and off with the receiver itself.

5 out of 5 eggsVery Nice

Pros: Great on screen display. The Calibrated setup mic worked very well. (and very easy).

Very powerful. 8 HDMI's in and 2 out, (simultaneously). Front HDMI connection. Front and Rear USB connections. Ethernet port.

Very high end Video upscaling for your old DVD collection.

I can pull video and audio directly off the Net or off my Windows Home server, (or my other Windows machines).

I have had no lockups.

Cons: It has a few second delay when switching input resolutions. (minor annoyance). Generates lots of heat even with sound on moderate volumes. (Even has a sticker on top saying "this reciever gets Faily Hot...Don't block the top.." Very heavy, (I reinforced my AV rack for this guy.

Other Thoughts: I have owned this one since Oct 2009. I had an Onkyo 706B prior to this and have used Yamaha's for last 10's. (The newer Yamaha's just did not have the Features/connections I needed when I bought this. I am a huge Yamaha fan!).

I love this reciever! Newegg has insane sales on many of the recievers nowdays, (especially weekends). The price/performance ratio is through the roof on many models.

I wish people would only do reveiws on items they actually own! Relying on "I heard this.." or "Someone on the net said..", is not a good way to do reviews. There are too many Fan Boys that can't give "The other brand" a fair shake. (Like I said, I love Yamaha, but I chose the Onkyo 706, then this 5007 this time.. next time I will buy what fits my needs. Maybe a Denon would be nice!).

3 out of 5 eggsOnkyo HDMI boards

Pros: A lot of pro's but, read below.........

Cons: Some Onkyo's, what percentage, who knows, Onkyo units 1007, 3007, 5007's have faulty HDMI boards & have to be sent in to Onkyo to get them replaced, U pay shipping in. And the DOA's, paperweights, more than there should be that's just poor Quality Control. Return unit to etailer if it happens soon after purchase. This is well noted in popular Audio Video Science forums.

Other Thoughts: I bought a different brand with less known issues. And that being said, there are a lot of good Onkyo units out that will not need HDMI board replacement service. DOA's are few.

5 out of 5 eggsVery Pleased!

Pros: I'm very, very impressed so far. I replaced my Sony STR-DE985 with this unit, and there's just no comparison. The 5007 is a huge step forward for me:
- 145 watts/channel
- Front speaker bridging
- THX certification
- HDMI switching
- Ethernet for media sharing and firmware updates
- USB ports
- Audyssey autoconfig
- Excellent instruction manual

Cons: - Runs a little warmer than I had hoped.
- Not really a true 'con' for the 5007, but initially I couldn't get my Denon 3910 DVD to play nice with the HDMI switching. After a couple days of searching the web on this, I finally narrowed it down to outdated firmware. So this fix this, I downloaded and installed the DVD units firmware update from Denon's site, and also updated the 5007 firmware, and now I have zero problems.

Other Thoughts: - I have to agree with the other reviewers, this unit is heavy (50 lbs). You need to plan ahead with where you will place this. My HT cabinet has glass shelves, and I ended up placing this at the base shelf (below the glass ones). While this worked fine, I preferred to have it up higher, but this is just a personal preference and nothing against this bad boy ;)

1 out of 5 eggsAn Expensive PAPER WEIGHT

Pros: NewEgg FAST Shipping and standing behind me.

Cons: The unit. It just shuts off...all by itself. Went thru several tech support people...finally...Onkyo decided the unit is BAD. Really??? The best unit out there (supposedly) and it just shuts off...even with NOTHING plugged into it. I used to like Onkyo...not so much anymore.

Other Thoughts: Make sure you OPEN THIS AND RUN IT for a couple WEEKS straight as SOON as you get it. That way you can RMA it if needed. We were moving and didn't get it unpacked for 2 months (sat in my front room in the orig box) and now I can't RMA it.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent HT Centerpiece

Pros: Outstanding unit with way more features than I will probably take advantage of. NewEgg was having a great deal and I took advantage of it. The Ethernet port is a real benefit if you have a home network with Internet connectivity. I can update the firmware easily, listen to 14760 Internet radio stations with the included vTuner access, and control the unit from my iPhone directly over my network. Also, since Onkyo receivers seem to historically run hot, this until has the ability to display its internal temperature, which is something I haven't had on any past Onkyo units.

Cons: Size and weight are the two biggest factors. Most shelves seem to have a limit of 50 pounds and this is a 55 pound unit. The size of the unit alone will take up most shelves, but you also need to factor in the space requirements for all the connections on the rear and adequate ventillation.

Other Thoughts: There are some bugs that require the unit be turned off then back on, but the ability for Onkyo to address those bugs have provide a firmware update makes the annoyance tolerable.

5 out of 5 eggsI Like it lots.....

Pros: Well what can i say this receiver will do just about anything you ask it to do. Looks and SOUNDS great with my set of polks. Did i say it sounds great. Not to difficult to set up. This will be the centerpiece of my home theater for years to come. The Reon-VX video-processing chip works great. The I pod dock works great aswell.

Cons: Now i have to buy better speakers. lol None that i can think of reallly. But be warned its heavy and big. I had to buy a new entertament stand, the glass shelf i tryied to put it on bowed badly. Oh and Wi-Fi would have been a bonus.

Other Thoughts: As per the norm Neweggs service and shipping were great.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Piece of design

Pros: Easy to set up, recognize my HP Home-server in seconds, Pandora application is a theme of conversation with my guess. I'm very happy with this powerful unit.

Cons: Maybe a few bug rarely but not a big deal, just turn the unit on and off and that fix the problem.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Receiver but needs some bug fixes

Pros: Overall, I am very pleased with this receiver, but it still has some bugs that need to be addressed. Streaming music from my Windows 7 PC works well and is a nice feature. NewEgg has a great price on this receiver.

Cons: Occassionally, the receiver would lock up. I have updated the firmware (which did not work initially over the internet, but I had to use a USB stick) and the lockups have mostly disappeared. The firmware update definitely resolved some of my issues. I also notice that sometimes my optical connection from Comcast DVR does not work when I first power up the Onkyo. Simply shutting the Onkyo off and then back on corrects the problem. I believe that once they get the bugs worked out of this unit, it will be awesome. Hopefully, they will continue to correct the issues.
