2 out of 5 eggsOnkyo TX-NR509

Pros: Nice receiver, but gets hot.

Cons: The receiver died after exactly 3 years. It was only used about once a month for an hour or two. Daily use would have sped up its end-of-life much sooner.

1 out of 5 eggsDied after 2 1/2 years:bad quality

Pros: Lots of features for a decent price, good sound, and sound calibration.

Cons: It's quite shameful that a company like this is neglecting quality..my brother and I both had two mini systems from Onkyo in Europe that lasted more than ten years, but that was more than 20 years ago....when it was time to replace my ten years old Yamaha receiver that did not support HD TV I thought about Onkyo, obviously a mistake.......

Other Thoughts: I have a second 7.2 av chives from Onkyo which has an excellent sound and very good features but I have lost the second zone audio and the rear channels....I guess I will not buy another Onkyo before a long time...

1 out of 5 eggsOnkyo junk

Pros: Under warranty...great. Out of warranty...a pretty paperweight.

Cons: No audio as soon as it was out of warranty. Pathetic. It appears this is a systemic problem with Onkyo. I will avoid this manufacturer in the future. Their best days are behind them.

Other Thoughts: I have owned Onkyo products in the past and enjoyed them. This purchase was a bitter disappointment, especially when I started investigating this issue and found that there are many, many others like me whose receiver just QUIT suddenly.

3 out of 5 eggsGood until failure - free repair

Pros: Great sound & modes
Easy setup
Optical audio

Cons: Died after 2+ years
Network apps are a bit archaic (though they work)
Volume button on remote wore out after about 2 years

Other Thoughts: My 2nd Onkyo receiver. Last one lasted a long time and I only upgraded to this one because I needed HDMI support.

Worked great, initially. But, one HDMI port died about 2 years in. Several months later, the audio stopped working altogether & Network stopped functioning. I called Onkyo (phone support) and after a couple of quick troubleshooting steps, they quickly agreed to fix the unit, 100% free of charge, even though it is outside the warranty. I don't like that it broke, or that I have to wait a couple of weeks for the repair, but under the circumstances, I am happy with the Onkyo support.

2 out of 5 eggsONKYO FAILS AFTER 2 YEAR WARRANTY

Pros: Everybody loves them while they work

Cons: Onkyo receiver fail after 2 year warranty

Other Thoughts: Onkyo has well known quality problem. These receivers fail after the 2-year warranty. If you look at Onkyo ratings & feed back. here and throughout the web, you see the same thing over and over: We all loved our receiver, but it died after two years. The problem appears to be a fabrication defect on the HDMI daughter board. The good news is, they may fix you out-of-warranty receiver.

If are thinking about an Onkyo, think twice. Do some more research.

If you have a failed Onkyo Receiver, they might repair it.

3 out of 5 eggsSolid until the warranty expired

Pros: Completely dependable part of my home theater arsenal for two years. Excellent sound and video quality.

Cons: Lost sound output after ~27 months, just outside the two-year warranty period. Some Googling indicates this to be a fairly common issue with this model, which I find disappointing.

Other Thoughts: I installed a pair of always-on 120mm fans into my media cabinet just to keep some air circulating. The equipment in there does not stay on all the time, but I figured it couldn't hurt. I don't have any reason to believe heat stress played a role here either.

1 out of 5 eggsDon't buy Onkyo

Pros: Great while it worked. Easy setup.

Cons: Onkyo has a problem. Check any site and you will see that they have a problem with quality. Shortly after the warranty expired it stopped working. No sound, no HDMI pass through, and it no longer has network connectivity. There is a known problem with this hardware and Onkyo is not acting like a company that cares. I have owned Onkyo (A10 amp) since the late 70's and never had a problem. They used to be the recommended system for quality. Not anymore!
