Built to exacting standards to bring the best out of your music, movies, and gaming content, Onkyo’s HT-S5400 packs a full-featured A/V receiver coupled with a quality eight-piece speaker set. To handle the latest Blu-ray, gaming, and cable/satellite devices, the receiver sports four latest HDMI inputs with support for 3D video, lossless audio from Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio, and an Audio Return Channel. A generous selection of digital and analog A/V inputs makes it easy to hook up your video camera, game console and more. And rounding out the connection highlights is a front-panel USB port for direct digital connection to your iPod/iPhone.

The HT-S5400 gives you the flexibility to harness the two extra front-height channels of Dolby Pro Logic IIz, which makes movies, games, and music more alive with atmosphere and realism. When it comes to set-up, Audyssey 2EQ ensures the surround soundstage is adjusted to the proportions of your living room. Audyssey Dynamic EQ and Dynamic Volume work to optimize your audio experience, while an overlaid on-screen display allows seamless adjustment of the system’s settings during a session.

A superb 7.1-channel speaker set with a 10-inch 120W powered subwoofer and 680W total power completes the package. Taking the hassle out of home theater, the budget-friendly HT-S5400 lets you step up to 7.1-channel home entertainment with the Onkyo stamp of quality.

  • newegg HDMI with 3D Ready and Audio Return Channel The HDMI implementation on the HT-S5400’s receiver supports both 3D video and an Audio Return Channel, along with numerous high-resolution formats. 3D video brings exciting possibilities to home entertainment, with movie, game, and broadcast content on the increase and 3D-compatible TVs now on the market. Meanwhile, the Audio Return Channel allows audio content received directly by your HDTV’s tuner to be sent “upstream” via HDMI to your A/V receiver, without the need for a separate S/PDIF audio cable.
  • newegg Dolby TrueHD/PLIIz and dts-HD Master Audio With the integrated Dolby TrueHD and dts-HD Master Audio decoders, enjoy lossless and immersive surround sound like it was meant to be. Dolby Pro Logic IIz brings the added dimension of height to create an immersive 7.1- or 9.1-channel surround sound experience from any stereo, 5.1, 6.1, or 7.1 movie, music, TV, or game audio source. Additionally, Dolby Pro Logic IIz is uniquely capable of decoding specially encoded height channel information and also supports the traditional 7.1-channel configurations of Dolby Pro Logic IIx.
  • newegg CinemaFILTER Technology CinemaFILTER, developed by Onkyo, is a solution that restores the correct tonal balance of a movie soundtrack in the smaller environs of your home theater, ensuring the smoothest sound at any volume.
  • newegg Theater-Dimensional Onkyo's exclusive Theater-Dimensional circuitry takes the complexity out of conventional surround-sound setups and lets you experience the excitement of surround sound from as few as two ordinary speakers. In addition, Theater-Dimensional's unique multi-speaker modes let you place up to five speakers conveniently by the TV, for the most realistic virtual-surround sound possible.
  • newegg Audyssey 2EQ, Dynamic EQ & Dynamic Volume Audyssey 2EQ for Room Acoustic Correction tailors multichannel audio for your home theater by correcting problems both in frequency response and in the time domain (where most of the problems lie) for a clear, precise, and natural sound. Audyssey Dynamic Volume maintains the desired listening level for all content while optimizing the dynamic range. Audyssey Dynamic EQ for Loudness Correction solves the problem of deteriorating sound quality at lower volumes.
  • newegg USB USB input can be used to play music files stored on USB mass storage devices (e.g., USB flash drives and MP3 players), which can be plugged into the receiver's USB port(s).

1 out of 5 eggsHT-S5400 7.1 Home Theater System

Pros: First 3 months all thumbs up, after that nothing but problems.

Cons: To whom it may concern:
I bought a complete system in a box through Newegg.com Sept. 2011 it was HT-R590 or S5400 7.1 Home Theater Sys.and don’t know if I got a obsolete system but I can’t find it on your website. But I am writing this to tell you that I am a unhappy customer. Your warranty system works well, other than I paid an extra couple hundred dollars in shipping to have this system reworked.
It was first sending back the receiver because my subwoofer was not working, I also had a satellite speaker that went back with the receiver and had to be replaced also.
So I get the receiver back and the subwoofer still did not work, so I sent in the sub and had to have that replaced.
With that being said, I will have a hard time recommending ONKYO to any of my friends and can say that I should have shopped a little more before buying this system.
I hope in the future you product can become a industry leader in customer service and loyalty.
Steve Merling

Other Thoughts: Save your money and if need be buy a cheap one and move up to a Yamaha or Bose or Polk down the road, this system will definitely be going into my garage, or being sold.

5 out of 5 eggsDollar for dollar, best deal around

Pros: Great Highs
Great Lows
Sound fills the room
Very affordable for the features (Automatic setting adjustments and such)
Multiple simulated 7.1 sound options for non-7.1 input which are effective.
Very upgradeable.

Cons: Serious break-in period on the sub. When I first set it up I maxed the volume on the sub and receiver. Could barely hear it. By the end of the day it was shaking the house, so don't stress it if it doesn't sound great right away

I don't want to say this is a perfect set because I don't want to convince someone with a $1000 budget to buy this instead. For this reason, I will list some very cons that are very picky.

The included speaker wire sucks. Buy 100ft of 16 guage wire (my room is 11x11 and 50ft barely cut it).
I used the included wire for my rear surrounds and there is a noticeable difference from the side surrounds I used 16 guage wire with.

The sub cable is really short.

It's a little lacking in mid-range. Just above the subwoofer range feels a little lacking. There probably isn't anything in this price range that will be better, so if it's a problem for you I would buy this set and get some additional bookshelves or floorstanding speakers to fill the void.

No

Other Thoughts: If you're looking into this set, you're probably getting your first set or are shopping for someone who is. I'm upgrading from a $50 2.1 speaker set so I'm not an experienced audiophile. I've been looking at speakers and HTIBs for weeks before deciding this was the best money for the value.

I use this set as my computer speakers, so I use it for music, video games, and movies a lot.

"Boomy" is a very subjective term. I consider boomy to be when the sub stands out and sounds unnatural. At excessive volumes the sub does get kind of boomy but for standard home theater needs it should be adequate. This is roughly equivalent to a $100 sub, so you can always upgrade.

Read the dimensions carefully, it's bigger than it looks in the pictures.

I originally planned to buy some floorstanding speakers for this but after using it I am very satisfied. It exceeded my expectations and I highly recommend it.

2 out of 5 eggsHDMI issues.

Pros: for what you get, meaning, power, 7.1, everything in one box, it's a good system. When it works, it's truly amazing.

Cons: The cons,
HDMI HDMI HDMI.

This is a ongoing issue with Onkyo receivers. While I type this my screens signal is going in and out. Others have reported issues with sound going out. Please. look at the other Onkyo recievers. do a search first.

I believe the system runs way to hot. The OSD has artifacting, which is normally caused by lack of power or overheating. Search for over heating issues with onkyo receivers. This receiver also has all those issues.

Other Thoughts: I may end up buying a different brand reciever, this is very dissapointing for me. I hoped for no problems when Skyrim came out.

5 out of 5 eggsAMAZING!

Pros: My sister has this Home Theatre system and it really impresses me. The Lows, Mids, and Highs are amazing! Really worth it. The bass literally shakes the house, haha.

Cons: The receiver looks kind of empty inside for the size but that quite alright

Other Thoughts: I WOULD SO RECOMMEND THIS TO ANYONE.

5 out of 5 eggsWAY-WAY MORE than You Pay For

Pros: Very easy to set up not matter which way or how you choose. However - wisely choose the most detailed and then double check for the best results - it will make a difference (machines can and sometimes do still make mistakes)
Excellent Manual, Incredible Sound, Fantastically Good Speakers
Very accurate sound-stage
Easily hear the differences between recordings and mixes,
Individual voices in a chorus or instruments in various pairings are easily heard (maybe for the first time).
This system will do everything your likely to expect and then surprise you with even more.
The Best for me - the system arrived 1 day after ordering with FREE shipping !!!

Cons: Nothing is ever perfect, and if it ever were, it never stays that way for long.

This unit and transaction as a whole or in parts have no "Cons" whatsoever that would be substantial or actually worth stating.

Other Thoughts: Phenomenal for the money and worth more than every cent.
As a former dealer of much more expensive Brand Name electronics, this system wonderfully expresses the current state of the art available for very little money.
SET UP options couldn't be easier unless you have someone else do it.
SOUND options are numerous and accurate as well as extra easy to access and adjust.
Make and take the time to thoroughly read the supplied manual as some of the cons mentioned elsewhere ARE covered (like the DEEP COLOR thing) within. As is adjusting the sound-stage (narrow or wide angle) or to move it forward or backward.
The supplied wood case (not plastic) speakers are remarkable. The 2 speaker design of the front L&R, big bonus, (likely difficult to design much smaller and have work as well). Freq. response is astounding in all 8.
You really will hear individual voices and instruments clearly, accurately and how they were recorded.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome Sound

Pros: I've always heard Onkyo is a good brand name. I've used this with a laptop, desktop and PS3, all sound great. The system comes with an auto-adjuster which works pretty well but I still had to fix it up a bit myself. It can get really loud without any distortion. Setup is pretty much idiot proof with color coding and a really simple diagram. HDMI passthrough is nicer than I thought it would be, you can use your TV and its speakers without the receiver on

Cons: Bass seemed somewhat depressing at first, but after a week or 2 it was great. I've read new speakers, and even more so subwoofers, have something like a burn-in time up front. This seems to be pretty normal with new sound systems so I cant count off.

Other Thoughts: I don't use the radio, don't even know where the antenna is now. The speaker cables do seem thinner than I would like but everything works fine so I'm not going to go buy anything new. I'm not a huge audio person but I think this sounds great and I'd buy it again.

5 out of 5 eggsBetter than I expected

Pros: Great sound and plenty of power for my 30x15 room. The auto setup for the surround sound was a surprise because it really works. It was very affordable and the black matches all my components.

Cons: I can't find any cons. I don't really understand some of the other surveys. Maybe the small wire may look as if it will loose some power, but I didn't find that it was.

Other Thoughts: Buy it !!!! It's a win/win solution.

5 out of 5 eggsGood System

Pros: The system is much bigger than it look in the pictures, which could be good or bad depending on your room size. I bought this system for a dorm room, so it's a bit big for that but I like that. It has good response, clear sound, and rich bass that doesn't get boomy if you configure it correctly. So far I've played my iPod and some Blu Ray samples through it and I am happy with the sound. I will set up the Front High speakers tomorrow to see what that adds to the setup but I'm fairly optimistic that it will be cool.

Cons: Size could be an issue but that's all relative to your room size. Supplied speaker wire is a bit thin, I bought some 16 gauge wire per multiple recommendations on the internet and I am very happy with the sound I'm getting out.
