Polk's Monitor Series has been the gold standard of speakers since the 1970's. This current generation features clear, accurate sound with strong bass and exception aural imaging. Polk made the enclosures out of MDF to be uniform in density and not resonate. They've also included ¾" thick baffles to help produce clear lifelike sound.
The four 6.5" cones are made from a bi-laminate composite for an optimal balance of weight and rigidity. They are split two and two for subwoofer and mid/woofer reproduction duties. A Cascade Tapered Array design maximizes bass response along with precise midrange reproduction. The 1" tweeter is a fabric/polymer composite the responds swiftly to the high efficiency Neodymium magnet. The crossovers between the drivers use Mylar bypass capacitors to let all of the details in the higher frequencies shine through.
No matter how good they sound, they have to look good too. Their contemporary look compliments today's flat panel televisions and modern decorating styles. They're magnetically shielded so you can place them near your electronics. The slim design takes up less than one square foot.
Tech Level: somewhat high - Ownership: 1 month to 1 year
Pros: Wonderfully clear Polk sound.
Cons: Still need a separate subwoofer for accurate lows.
Other Thoughts: The only reason I bought these was because the outlet store of a major mail-order catalog had them for an unbelievable price ($260/pair). I already had a set of Polk R30 floor standing speakers (single 5.25" cone and tweeter) , and was satisfied with those. However, when I brought these Monitor 70's home and set them up there was a distinct difference! I was blown away with how much clearer and crisper all of the sound effects were. Everything sounded much more natural, and produced more enveloping sound. I highly reccommend them.

Pros: Great price, very well constructed, nice sound
Cons: I have the same issue everyone has, no powered sub = no lows.
Other Thoughts: I am working on setting up a 7.1 system using the monitor line, so far (Monitor 70-front, M50 rear, cs2 center) Just looking for a good deal on M40 for the rear and a good polk sub. For the money you cant beat them.

Pros: Well built, sweet sound, good looking, bi-amp-able.
Cons: The shape is a little flip-prone.
Other Thoughts: One reason I bought this pair is that people appraised its low frequency and several reviews said a subwoofer was not necessary. However that is not the case. I got a microPRO 3000 and I can clearly tell the difference.

This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: They're Polk Audio. The PRICE, Thanks Eggsters! The SOUND. The construction, it has to be great to live through the ride from the left coast to La. (No... Not lower Alabama) with those "freight stress testers" at Buster Brown! A Great product for music lovers everywhere and Way, WAY cheaper than those B&O, Beo 5s I heard in Cowboy country and the clarity and reproduction is astounding. Unlike another Polk reviewer, I find the 70's, in front, go perfectly with my AT15 CV speakers at the rear, perhaps he needs MORE POWER! to drive the group. My new Ma*^$tz SR6003 tuner can really stretch it's legs now and with the Polk CS2 center and LG LCD the Egg just sent, I find it hard to leave the room, likewise, so do my Guests.
Cons: You have to be literate to read the opening instructions and the specs.! UPS is the designated parcel Mauler. To be fair, if I had to handle freight, up to 70 lbs. and make an unbelievable amount of deliveries only to miss supper every night, I might not use kid gloves myself.
Other Thoughts: These monitor series units have been around a long time and they are large but the sound they can deliver is one of the reasons that Polk Audio is so successful. Their appearance came in second place to the importance of the sound quality and besides, who wants their living room to look like the bridge of the Enterprise anyway? (Oh Chill Trekkies!)

Multiple small-diameter driver design delivers wide dispersion, better mid-range, and more detailed bass response for an open, "box-less," three-dimensional sound.
Cascade Tapered Array (2-1/2-way) design. Both drivers play bass frequencies but only one driver (the upper one) plays upper-midrange frequencies. This method provides maximum bass output along with precise imaging and detailed midrange response.
Non-resonant all-MDF enclosure construction with 0.75"-thick baffles and front–to-back and side-to-side internal bracing ensures cleaner, clearer, more lifelike sound quality.
Magnetically shielded for safe placement on or near TVs and video monitors with no risk of video distortion.
Slim tower design has a footprint of less than one square foot.
Lower -3dB Limit: 40Hz
Upper -3dB Limit: 24kHz
Crossover: 2.6kHz and 2.6kHz cascade tapered 2nd order
Enclosure Type: Vented via front panel flared port
