Polk Audio 12" Powered Subwoofer Single

Explosive Performance for Movies and Music

Have a big room? Have the need for big, life-like bass impact? Then the PSW505 is the subwoofer for you. More than a mere brute, the PSW505 is equally at home reproducing all the subtle nuance of a plucked string bass as it is belting out a rocker's roar. Full-featured and over-powered, the PSW505 will rock your world and tick off your neighbors.

PSW505 Features

  • Real wood veneer finish
  • Slot Load Venting improves bass response. The wide, long Slot Load Vent dramatically lessens turbulence, noise and distortion, pouring out a tidal wave of precise, thunderous bass!
  • Polk subs sound better because they're built better. Rock-solid MDF construction (including a 1-inch thick front baffle) suppresses enclosure panel resonance for distortion-free, accurate response.
  • Big 12-inch Long Throw Driver for longer excursion and better linearity.
  • Huge Hi-Roll Surrounds that support their longer excursion.
  • Most powered subwoofers are good for just gut-rumble and boom. Polk understands that you listen to music too so our subs are tight, precise and accurate.
  • High current 300-Watt Continuous (460-Watt Dynamic) power amplifier.
  • Adjustable low pass crossover, phase switch and volume control allows perfect blending with any main speaker.
  • Auto on/off circuit that automatically turns your subwoofer on when it senses a program signal. When no signal is present, the amplifier turns off within 15 minutes
  • Unfiltered LFE input for use with low pass filtered subwoofer output jacks
  • Pro-grade 5-way binding posts speaker inputs and outputs.
  • Magnetically shielded for safe, flexible placement next to a TV or video monitor.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Warranty Service

Pros: Powerful subwoofer with great low end frequency range. Lots of wiring options available for whatever kind of set up you have. I wanted a sub that could provide a really warm walking bass - I tune my system with Miles Davis' Flamenco Sketches - Alternate Take.

After using this almost daily for two years the Sub started to misfire when it was supplied power (even without audio input). I figured this was due to a loose ground and should be part of the manufacturer's warranty. I went on Polk's web page and found people asking what to do if x wasn't working, and a guy named Ken responded to them all with his email address. I emailed Ken, heard back within 1 hour, and the same day they had a new amplifier board shipped out to me.

Cons: The ground dropped after about 2 years of use, but otherwise no issues.

Other Thoughts: It's way bigger than I thought it was going to be when I ordered it!

I can't include the email address to contact for warranty service in this review, but you can easily find Ken on the Polk PSW505 web page. I sent him a description of the problem, what troubleshooting steps I took, and what I thought the issue is. Then I just had to provide my original Order/Invoice number, Contact Information (Name, Address, Phone), and the Serial Number on the back of the subwoofer.

2 out of 5 eggsPSW505

Pros: Nice sound, looks good, priced right, LFE

Cons: after about 8 months I came home one day to a scratchy noise coming from the sub. I called Polk and was told it sounded like the amp had failed. They only offered to replace the amp which I have to install myself (no big deal but still not great service) and then proceeded to tell me that the part is on back order and should be available in A MONTH AND 1/2!!!! I asked for an alternative, nothing offered.

1 out of 5 eggsUnresponsive warranty service

Pros: OK sound while it lasts

Cons: Stopped working after just a few months and customer service is completely unresponsive regarding warranty claim.

Other Thoughts: Based on the customer service I've seen so far, I will never buy another PolkAudio product again.

4 out of 5 eggsawsome for price

Pros: easy to setup. many ways to set this up ,went lfe.have 2 now for 7.2 sound.very sharp looking. like control in back, for my needs has plenty thump. dont think u can do better this price range.

Cons: kind of heavy for me to lift, sometimes pick up a little gurgling in male voice in mid range punch, to low end . not sure y? been trying to cut feq- but still does it. could be the ypao mic set up, on the yamaha.

Other Thoughts: would like to thank new egg for fast delivery, overnight. came with no damage i know the guy he does supper job every time i get him on delivery.thanking him personality on does make a diff- when they care too, lot less damage.makes everyone happy.

5 out of 5 eggsPounds!!

Pros: It pounds
12 picks up a great range from deep lows to those weirdish highs.
COD sounded just amazing.
Action/adventure/Sci-Fi movies are great on this sub.
I listen to a lot of rap/hip-hop and this thing just goes to town on that type of music. Oh man, put in some triple six mafia and watch for the cops out front.

Cons: Cannot hook up in my apartment building. Neighbors would get ultra PO'd. Plus I have a state trooper living downstairs now :(
Very heavy, kind of a beast to move.
Sharp corners?
I'm really stretching for some cons here.

Other Thoughts: I could not be happier with this sub. I have it, had it, in with 2 infinity towers, some little KLH monitors, and a Polk center channel. Not an audiophile quality system but hey, it rocks my world.

Watch that Star Trek reboot, the first one, this thing kills it.

3 out of 5 eggsDead after 1.5 months or 5 movies

Pros: good price- i bought a bunch of polk speakers /floor standing center etc. Tthey all sound good, this was loud- i mean really loud, i had the bass about 35%. this served as a 2nd sub add to my bedroom setup.
i think

Cons: Died in a month and half and i guess i watched about 5 movies, its making static sound or no sound. I researched and seems like its problem with polk subs with their boards dying. I called in Polk and they are sending me another board free- which i thought was pretty awesome.

Other Thoughts: its a ok sub- i wished i had bought Klipsch or maybe JL or a better one. The sound is LOUD but not deep- its hard to explain- my other onkyo sub which a 10' and half of its size sounds deeper better. Maybe this needs to be broken in.
5 Stars for polk customer service though-

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Sub

Pros: The sub is easy to set up and sounds great. When properly paired with a receiver the bass can be set to fit your taste.

Cons: No real cons yet.

Other Thoughts: When you set it up be sure to use the receiver to control the frequencies that are sent to the sub amplifier to obtain the best sound balance among all speakers.

4 out of 5 eggsPolk Audio PSW505 12"

Pros: Sounds great with my Sony 7.1 receiver and all Polk Audio speaker set up. Bass sounds clear and is not muddled

Cons: Somehow when i was swapping the cord for the LFE the port became damaged and would no longer work. Speaker worked fine using other methods but this was the main one for my receiver.

Other Thoughts: Called Polk and they were pretty helpful and decided that they would ship a whole new sub to me and I did not have to do anything with the damaged one which was great. After about 2 weeks I still havent received the sub. Called Polk and they will not receive anymore speakers to ship out till the beginning of March.

I am happy they are sending me a new one but a bit annoyed by the time frame.

4 out of 5 eggsDecent Sub

Pros: Polk is a high end brand in home and car audio. With that in mind, I decided to get this sub instead of a different one in the same price range. It's a good sub, but not great. It does get loud, it does rumble pretty good, but it doesn't like really low bass. Anything really low, like below 40 hz, roughly, and it will distort even on lower power settings.
I pad $150 for this sub. For that price, it is a really good sub.
Front firing, 300 watts RMS, nice sturdy construction. A nice looking piece of furniture.

Cons: Tends to distort with really low bass. Bass frequencies below 40 hz and this thing will just distort and pop. It's not really bad, I've heard much much much worse. But its bad enough that I was disappointed. If super low bass is important to you, then a better sub would be recommended.

Other Thoughts: I got this sub after I got my dad a Polk sub. I bought him the super epic 1100 watt RMS 8 inch Polk. That thing is epic. Of course it is, right? But after hearing how amazing that thing sounded, I decided to go with this one. It's a great sub for cheap. It's good for gaming, music and movies. It's really best for music, but it does well for games and movies too. Just loud explosions with really low notes tend to distort and when that happens you notice it immediately and its really distracting.
But, if you just want a decent sub for a budget home theatre then this one is great. I wouldn't hesitate to buy it again for what I paid. But knowing how it performs, I might have paid more for something else. It's always nice to test out home audio before you buy, something I can't do way out here where I live in the middle of nowhere.
This is the type of sub that you hear, not feel. There are subs that just shake your house where you can't really hear super loud booming bass. Those are the subs that are great for gaming and movies. Then there are subs that are really loud. They hit hard, but they don't shake your house apart. Those are they type that are better for music. This is the latter, more loud than rumble.
