Polk's Monitor Series has been the gold standard of speakers since the 1970's. The current generation Monitor 35B features high efficiency and compact design for open, spacious and clear sound even driven by modestly-powered amplifiers and receivers. Polk made the enclosures out of MDF to not resonate. They've also included ¾" thick baffles to help produce clear lifelike sound.

The 5.25" cone is made from bi-laminate composite for an optimal balance of weight and rigidity. The small driver delivers a wide open sound and exceptional responsiveness. The 1" tweeter is a fabric/polymer composite driver that responds swiftly to the high efficiency neodymium magnet. The crossovers between the drivers use Mylar bypass capacitors to let all of the details in the higher frequencies shine through.

No matter how good they sound, they have to look good too. Their contemporary look complements today's flat panel televisions and modern decorating styles.

  • newegg Exceptional Sound Quality The Polk Audio Monitor 35B boasts a 5.25" Bi-Laminate composite dynamic balance drivers and a 1" dynamic balance silk/polymer composite dome tweeter to deliver crisp highs and accurate lows for an immersive listening experience.
  • newegg Dual 5-way binding post connectors Dual 5-way binding post connectors allows for more secure hook-up options, as well as bi-wiring and bi-amping flexibility.
  • newegg Critically tuned flared port Critically tuned flared port minimizes port noise ("chuffing") for good low frequency extension with low distortion, resulting in natural, full-bodied sound with rich bass.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Little Speaker for the Price

Pros: Small, efficient and powerful speakers. I've got 4 of them as a home theatre package replacing small inefficient Sony speakers & what a difference! Love them, now I can't wait to get my new Sony STRDN-1040 7.2 AVR & Polk Audio 15C center channel speaker to hear how they really sound!

Cons: Have not found a single Con yet.

Other Thoughts: If you're looking for a small package with a lot of BANG & you can pick these speakers up for significantly less than the listed price of 249.99 (which I'd never pay); I would highly recommend these speakers!

5 out of 5 eggsVery Nice Speakers for the price

Pros: I recently remodeled my bedroom and wanted to get rid of my old floor speakers. These speakers fit the bill perfectly as they have been placed on top of my Étagère. They have great bass response as you would expect from Polk. The price was awesome. If you go to the Polk website, they list for $250.00.

4 out of 5 eggsPolk Monitor 35B Review

Pros: When connected to a relatively low-powered 35 Watt per channel vacuum tube amplifier, these Polk monitor speakers provided crisp clear highs and mid-range response. I removed the woofer on one of my speakers for a quick look inside. I thought the overall construction was pretty good, with lots of corner braces and hot glue used throughout. The inside of the box was lined with a acoustic absorption material to help damp the woofer. The port had a nice smooth flared shape. Large plastic bumpers and a steel wall mounting bracket that project out the back of the speakers are there to prevent users from placing the speakers too close to a wall or bookshelf and blocking the rear bass port output. The speakers feature large heavy duty binding posts. I would have liked to have seen 5-way binding posts, these posts just allow for a wire to be inserted into a hole and the nut is then tightened to secure it. The drivers appear to be made of good quality materials.

I especially liked the flush mounting of the woofer and tweeter. The woofer has a nice custom made plastic surround ring that fits over its metal basket to provide a seamless fit between the box front and the front of the woofer. Both the woofer and tweeter are mounted into recesses that allows them to fit flush with the front box panel. This is supposed to reduce diffraction effects and improve sound staging. Speaking of imaging, as is typical of small 2-way speakers, it was excellent on these Polk 35B's. On minimally miked stereo recordings with the speakers placed about four feet apart on a bookshelf, it was almost like listening to head phones. The imaging was uncanny, with the positioning of band and orchestral instruments easily determined in the well projected sound field.

Cons: I was most disappointed with the bass output of these speakers. You will definitely need to use them with a subwoofer to obtain a good deep bass response. I used a Dynaco tube amp to audition them with. A higher current transistor amplifier would probably help improve the bass response of these loud speakers. My only other complaint was the boxes are made from a light weight half inch thick MDF. As a result they had a nice ring to them when wrapped with the knuckles on the outside. I own a similar size set of of older Infinity speakers that are constructed out of 3/4" MDF and they have no ring whatsoever in comparison. If you place your hand on the outside of the box when the woofer is playing even at moderate volume levels, you can feel the box vibrating in response. This is a definite no no and muddies what could otherwise be a near perfect listening experience. The lack of low end bass response in the critical 60-80 Hz range was surprising to me for a bass reflex design. These compare more closely with a sealed box design in the low bass response. Again the thin MDF construction maybe part of the problem with the poor bass response.

Other Thoughts: If Polk had used a heavier 5/8 or 3/4 inch MDF in the construction of these loud speaker boxes they would have had an outstanding product in its price class and I would have awarded them five eggs. But due to the substandard box construction I reduced that rating to four eggs. If you can get these on sale they would make good rear speakers in a home theater surround sound system, or for use in a bedroom, den, or college dormitory setting. Polk should consider offering a "Pro" version made out of 5/8" MDF for a slightly higher price. I think they would have an immediate classic design if made that design change.

5 out of 5 eggsgreat sound

Pros: great clear and crisp sound. of course u could buy better but for the price its an easy steal... I have them hooked up right now with a polk sub and they go great together. i'd recommend getting a sub with these speakers just to get your deep lows that they leave out but that's what to expect when buying loudspeakers... lol

Cons: hmmmm.... none yet...

Other Thoughts: defiantly invest in a good AVR... that's how your gonna get good sound with these babies or any speaker that is lol I had an old denon avr but upgraded to a harmon/kardon and boy what a difference!

5 out of 5 eggsMonitor 35B Loudspeakers

Pros: I love these speakers. I replaced my Sony rebuilt speaker with these. We noticed that the speakers being ported in the back give these speakers a lower range than non-ported. The range of frequency is excellent for price and I recommend them.

Cons: There really are no cons on these. Except you may want to add banana plugs at the end of your wires to connect these speakers for ultimate speaker experience without power loss.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat little speaker for home theater and audio

Pros: Nicely compact, rear ported for effeicency, I have mine connected to a Denon AVR home theater receiver and they are performing quite well. I also connected them to a vintage Kenwood KR-4400 receiver and they sounded quite nice on some cds that I tried.

Cons: I wish they were still made by the original company but time marches on.

Other Thoughts: I picked up the Polk subwoofer PSW121 to match up with them and so far life has been good.

1 out of 5 eggsBuy something else

Pros: It came un broken

Cons: Polk Audio is now a holding company. Quality lower than whale dung. Shined a flash light into rear port to see inside and appears to be sloppily glued together with hot glue. Claim to be MDF board but mounting them on stands for rears looked like plastic sawdust. Avoid "NEW" Polk and find older "TRUE" Polk before holding company.

Other Thoughts: The whole holding company for Polk Audio needs to re think their agenda. They are ruining the Polk sound and reputation. I owned a audio company untill the economy died. Polk Audio was my best seller and were featured in the listening room. Can no longer recommend.
