Polk's Monitor Series has been the gold standard of speakers since the 1970's. The current generation Monitor 45B features high efficiency design in a dual-driver bookshelf size giving you more options for high performance audio. Polk made the enclosures out of MDF to not resonate. They've also included ¾" thick baffles to help produce clear lifelike sound.

The 5.25" cones are made from bi-laminate composite for an optimal balance of weight and rigidity. The small driver delivers a wide open sound and exceptional responsiveness. The 1" tweeter is a fabric/polymer composite driver that responds swiftly to the high efficiency neodymium magnet. The crossovers between the drivers use Mylar bypass capacitors to let all of the details in the higher frequencies shine through.

No matter how good they sound, they have to look good too. Their contemporary look complements today's flat panel televisions and modern decorating styles.

  • newegg Exceptional Sound Quality The Polk Audio Monitor 45B boasts two 5.25" Bi-Laminate composite dynamic balance drivers and a 1" dynamic balance silk/polymer composite dome tweeter to deliver crisp highs and accurate lows for an immersive listening experience.
  • newegg Dual 5-way binding post connectors Dual 5-way binding post connectors allows for more secure hook-up options, as well as bi-wiring and bi-amping flexibility.
  • newegg Critically tuned flared port Critically tuned flared port minimizes port noise ("chuffing") for good low frequency extension with low distortion, resulting in natural, full-bodied sound with rich bass.

5 out of 5 eggsImpressive and Inspiring

This review is from: Polk Audio Monitor Series New Monitor 45B Two-Way Bookshelf Loudspeaker (Black) Pair

Pros: Great Looking!
Produces good clean accurate sound for the price!
Have them placed on speaker stands which look great!
I'm am very impressed with these speakers.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: I don't consider myself an audiophile but I'm definitely learning and being able to tell some major differences between certain hardware and file types. Hoping someday to own a pair of really nice speakers, I saw these on sale and for the price I picked these up for now and boy am I glad I did. I did add a Polk PSW108 just to reach into the lower 40-60hz range better for a pretty full sound although they do sound very good still by themselves. I'm also using a simple stereo receiver giving each channel 100w and also an Asus Essence STX. I've also used them for some recording and mixing in Garageband, but I never get tired of listening to my music. I love these speakers.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome

This review is from: Polk Audio Monitor Series New Monitor 45B Two-Way Bookshelf Loudspeaker (Black) Pair

Pros: Bought 4 of these for surround sound speakers, cannot afford my main speakers yet so I use these until then. I have to say, I am not sure I will need two big front speakers...these things really put out some good sound.

Crisp, clear and loud. what more can you ask for.

Cons: none yet

4 out of 5 eggsWorth the money I paid

This review is from: Polk Audio Monitor Series New Monitor 45B Two-Way Bookshelf Loudspeaker (Black) Pair

Pros: Once broken in they sound very full;
fairly attractive in a generic kind of way;
solid and heavy;
Best used in a smaller enclosure, with a sub and or as a satellite (which is what I've done)

Cons: The MDF and the faux wood covering appear to be rather cheap;
they are bigger in reality than they appear in the picture (be sure to measure your space);
As a wall mounted satellite thy will require a heavy duty mounting bracket.

Other Thoughts: I use these as rears in a 5.1 that includes Monitor 60 II, a CS 11 center, 10" sub and a Pioneer vsx 1122. I paid under 100 and don't think I'd be as pleased with them if they were my mains or if I had paid full price

5 out of 5 eggsVery Satisfied

This review is from: Polk Audio Monitor Series New Monitor 45B Two-Way Bookshelf Loudspeaker (Black) Pair

Pros: Clear sound, nice looks, banana plug terminals

Cons: none so far

Other Thoughts: Purchased these to replace my 10 year old floor standing Advent speakers. They are my L & R front speakers in my 7.1
surround setup. Also have Polk subwoofer in the mix.
very satisfied with the sound from movies and music.

4 out of 5 eggsPolk 45B Speakers

This review is from: Polk Audio Monitor Series New Monitor 45B Two-Way Bookshelf Loudspeaker (Black) Pair

Pros: Best speakers I've owned to date. I'm not an audiophile but the sound is clear & distinct. No hissing or humming. Nice wiring connections. I use these for stereo music as well as front speakers for HD audio on movies.

Cons: I've only owned these for a little over a month, no cons so far

Other Thoughts: From midlevel to high volume these speakers are fantastically clear. At low volume the clarity drops off some, which is probably true for most speakers.

4 out of 5 eggsSuprisingly good

This review is from: Polk Audio Monitor Series New Monitor 45B Two-Way Bookshelf Loudspeaker (Black) Pair

Pros: Great price for the pair.
When you turn them up, there is more than enough bass to shake the walls of a small room such as a bedroom without having to pair them with a subwoofer.

Cons: Not biwirable?

Other Thoughts: These are much larger than other bookshielf speakers.
They probably won't fit on your desk with your computer monitor, but they aren't tall enough to stand by themselves.
You wouldn't really wall mount them and they don't aren't threaded to accept a wall mount anyway.

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic value

This review is from: Polk Audio Monitor Series New Monitor 45B Two-Way Bookshelf Loudspeaker (Black) Pair

Pros: Compact, affordable, fantastic sound, good bass for bookshelf speakers. Great clarity. Sweet looks, too.

Cons: Can't cheap out on speaker stands like I'd prefer to, as they're somewhat heavy.. Bass sounds great but doesn't get all the way down into the lower frequencies.

Other Thoughts: I'm not very well versed in stereo tech, sound apprecation, etc. but I know these are a big step up in sound quality from a Logitech Z5500 set. Less bass than the Z5500, but what you do get is so much clearer and better-defined that you won't mind. Z5500 hits lower frequencies but is muddy enough that it's harder to tell them apart. No such problem with this. Paired with a Sony STR-K502 that I was given. I could use a step up on the receiver front, but I'm quite happy with it, and somewhat blissfully ignorant as this is my first "real" stereo, ie. not an all-in-one unit or computer speaker package.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat bang for the buck when on sale

This review is from: Polk Audio Monitor Series New Monitor 45B Two-Way Bookshelf Loudspeaker (Black) Pair

Pros: At full price, there are many options that compete with these speakers but Polk Monitors rarely (ever?) sell for full price at newegg. I'm not a hardcore audiophile, but to my vulgar ears, they're quite crisp and clear without ever sounding harsh or muddy at sane volume levels. They also have pleasantly potent and crisp bass for their size.

Cons: Read the specs carefully. They're quite deep and have a rear port. This may limit where you can place them. While they have impressive bass for their size, they don't fundamentally change speaker design; bigger speakers (or adding a sub) will produce lower frequencies, giving you a more complete and richer sound.

Other Thoughts: I also own a pair of Polk TSX550T speakers. The TSX550Ts are large, floorstanding speakers with 5 drivers, including 2 8-inch ones. A single tower costs more than a pair of Monitor 45Bs. It's not surprising that the TSX550T speakers produce a richer, fuller sound. What is surprising is how close the 45Bs get to their much larger cousins for a fraction of the price.

5 out of 5 eggsSick

This review is from: Polk Audio Monitor Series New Monitor 45B Two-Way Bookshelf Loudspeaker (Black) Pair

Pros: 1. Price
2a. Sound for the price
2b. Sound regardless of price
3. Using them with a 100w/ch receiver in stereo only, with a turntable as well as a droid + ipod through line-in
4. Sounds better than the two Monitor 60 floor speakers I was using before, pleasantly surprised

Cons: Weak bass but that is to be expected.
A bit large if you're using them as "bookshelf" speakers
Too big to wall-mount

Would recommend speaker stands.

Other Thoughts: Set-up in a room roughly 10x12 with hardwood floors, receiver gives them their limit on watts, sound is excellent if you are not a dorky audiophile
