Definitive's StudioMonitor 350 is a compact high-performance, magnetically shielded full-range bookshelf speaker. But don’t let its small size fool you—thanks to its 8 inch pressure-coupled Low Bass radiator it belts out the bass depth and punch of a floor-standing loudspeaker. Its non-resonant monocoque cabinets feature Definitive's elegant piano-gloss black lacquer end cap/wraparound grille cloth styling.

The StudioMonitor 350's sonic performance is truly stunning, producing huge razor-sharp, three-dimensional sonic images combined with incredible detail, ruler-flat frequency response and rich, full bass. Because the StudioMonitors are true full-range speakers with extended low-frequency response they deliver superb performance both as stand-alone speakers and when combined with separate subwoofers.

  • newegg Monocoque, Non-Resonant, Low-Diffraction Cabinet The cabinet of a loudspeaker plays a large part in its sonic performance. Diffraction, or the secondary radiation of sound caused by cabinet edges, grille frames and other protrusions, can color the sound of a loudspeaker. The design of the StudioMonitors reduces diffraction to an absolute minimum by flush mounting drivers on extremely narrow baffles with radial edges, which are covered by a frameless grille "sock." In addition, the resonant vibration of a loudspeaker's cabinet walls and baffles can also impart unwanted coloration. The Definitives' monocoque cabinets are constructed of high-density medite with 1" thick front and rear baffles, foam damping pads and internal braces. This virtually eliminates resonant cabinet coloration which could otherwise interfere with the pure sound produced by the high definition drivers.
  • newegg High-Definition Cast-Magnesium Basket Drivers The StudioMonitor 350 utilizes a 5-1/4 inch high definition cast basket bass/midrange driver for significant performance advantages in the areas of bass reproduction, lifelike midrange clarity and dynamic range. This sophisticated bass/midrange driver incorporates deeply drawn mineral-filled polymer cone, combined with butyl rubber surround and dust-cap, high temperature vented voice coils and massive magnet structures. This combination of features assures high definition, superb transient response, high efficiency, high power handling and extended bass response. In addition, they are assembled utilizing an aerodynamically designed, magnetically inert, cast-magnesium basket to minimize internal reflections off the back of the cone and preserve structural and magnetic integrity under all conditions.
  • newegg Moving Coil Pure Aluminum Dome Tweeters The moving coil dome tweeters Definitive developed for the BP7000 Series are used in the StudioMonitor 350. They utilize a specially annealed pure aluminum 1-inch dome, suspended by a silk surround and acoustically loaded by a precisely configured phase plug/lens, engineered to assure perfectly controlled, absolutely linear movement. This results in velvety smooth extended response (beyond 30 kHz), greatly reduced distortion, improved transient response, wider dispersion and notably higher definition. Magnetic fluid damping is incorporated for ultra high power handling.
  • newegg Phase-Coherent Linkwitz-Riley Crossover Networks The crossover network of a loudspeaker is the real heart of the system, as it is responsible for perfectly blending together the sound of the various drivers into a musically seamless whole. The sophisticated Linkwitz-Riley design used in the SM350 equalizes the drivers for linear phase and frequency response. This preserves the phase coherence, transient response and dynamic integrity of the signal for absolutely lifelike music and home theater reproduction in your home.

5 out of 5 eggsGot two more because they're awesome.

Pros: Bought a second pair of these because I was so pleased with the first pair. That and newegg promo'ed the price to even lower than what I paid for the first set. I should change my name to highway robber. :D My review of the first set stands here too. The only difference is that I'm not using them as mains. All four are the surround channels in my 7 speaker setup. My mains are now Def Tech BP-7006's. Aren't you all just green with envy!? (My center is an old Yamaha shelf speaker in desperate need of being catapulted into my neighbor's window.

Cons: Def Tech are evil vermin bent on ruling the galaxy. No wait, that's General Sarris. My bad.

Other Thoughts: These speakers are meant to be put on stands. However, if you have children or dogs (in my case both) then you know using stands is a remarkably stupid things to do. Finding wall mounts for these is very difficult. There are very few that will safely support a 14 lbs. speaker. The Peerless spk 811 is one of them.

5 out of 5 eggsMetal domes

Pros: Most of the other reviews cover the pros of these speakers. I use them for near field listening and replaced some boston acoustic VR-M60 monitors with them. They are smaller, slightly more accurate, and still have a great metal dome tweeter timbre. If you prefer metal domes, this is a great set of speakers. Their use of passive radiators keeps the size down a bit.

Cons: I have found that they are a bit more direction than the VR-M60s I was using prior. The toe in for these using a near field setting is a little more sensitive to position.

I prefer my music very "clean" sounding. Some may call this crisp. I typically drop a lot of the mid bass which sounds drone-y or muddy. I have yet to find a set of speakers which sound good in the midbass region, but I'm just not sure my ears will ever like it.

If you like good clean music with accurate bass, these speakers are awesome.

Other Thoughts: I use them with a marantz receiver with a true 100W per channel. There is a break in period, so reserve judgment until after a few days. I've paired them with a martin logan depth (an accurate musical sub) and find the blend fantastic!

4 out of 5 eggsVery good value

Pros: Very nice detail and serviceable bass for a speaker of this size. Good looks. Great value for the one fifty I paid.

Cons: Sound is a little hard in the treble, perhaps will be smoothed out after a good break in period. Cosmetic defect in the mesh grill, dented in a a location, visible but not worth returning.

Other Thoughts: In the past Definitive made their speakers in the USA. These are made in China.

5 out of 5 eggsPOWER HUNGRY

Pros: Excellent accuracy, neutrality, imaging, speed and extension. Even at its original MSRP, this was a no brain deal.

Cons: Power requirement specs are misleading. sensitivity 90db ? Hmmm.... I don’t think so. These little guys need gobs of clean dynamic power to reach their full potential. Nearly all of the negative reviews, can be attributed to attempting to drive this speaker with low to mid-level A/V receivers and other sub-par front end components. ****Garbage in - Garbage out****

Heavy, needs a sturdy, quality stand and placed well clear of corners, walls ect.

4 out of 5 eggsupdate

Pros: Look nice
Good sound for the price
rounded edges (sound tapers off, enhancing the sound stage)
warm sound
No sound coloration
Good sound stage
Quite clear and nearly polished treble
Well-built cabinet
Suitable for small rooms as stereo
Good side/rear speakers in a home theater setup
Better center speakers than most center speakers sold in this price range (use a pair)
Bass/treble speakers placed close

Cons: mesh in virtually unremovable
Sound stage not very detailed
Needs at least 80W/channel (50W with a HK) amplification (relatively low sensitivity)
Small membrane surface
A bit muffled sound
No dual wiring

Other Thoughts: I was also appalled by the three negative reviews by the same person. He must be using a Kenwood amplifier... These speakers sound good on older Harman Kardons (with toroid transformers; I am using one with these), but they must be terrible with a cheap Class D (digital) amplifier (all speakers do). I am not using them in a small room paired with a 10" Klipsch sub and they sound fine. The treble could be improved, but you would have to pay a lot more for polished treble (e.g a B&W CM-5).

5 out of 5 eggsGreat suround sound speakers!

Pros: Very accurate and flat speakers.(Which is a good thing)

Great sounding surround sound speakers with the added bass from the radiator!

Built very well. They weigh in at 14 L.B.s which is very solid and quite heavy for a speaker this small.

The 450's sound much better. However you can't beat these 350's for great timber matched surround sound speakers.

What a great price on both the 450's and the 350's!! You simply can't beat the price of these discontinued speakers!

All my old CDs that I have not listened to in years are producing sound that I had never heard before with the 450's and 350's paired up together.

Movies just blow me away now.

Cons: None for me. However if you attempt to use these as your main fronts you might be disappointed.

While they really do sound great they are not near as good as the Monitor 450's at just $100 more!

Other Thoughts: I currently running the Deftech studio 450's as my main fronts and they truly shine.

They are by far the best pair of speakers I have ever owned over all these years!

I will have to buy a new powered sub to replace my entry level Polk PSW-10!

The DefTechs are set at a 60 H.Z. cross-over frequency in my Yamaha receiver and my powered sub is only playing about 20 H.Z. now and it's very noticeable.

You can get away without using a sub with the 450's. However I want to take some pressure off of them so they can play louder!

So a new Polk PSW505 is on-deck to purchase! I was able to test this sub in my apartment since my Dad owns one.

The L.F.E. port works great with the 450's and will give me a low end down from 40 H.Z. to 25 H.Z. which is a huge improvement!

These 350's are quite a bit smaller, however they can be used as fronts with a powered sub or as really great surround sound speakers matched with the Monitor 450's!

I absolutely love my speaker system! Now I need to get a much better powered sub and will probably replace my Polk CS-10 with a Polk CS-20 to get better low end voice production.

These Definitives have a way of showing up all your other speakers, allowing all their faults that I did not notice before to become very pronounced!

4 out of 5 eggsdeftech studiomonitor 350

Pros: amazing sound quality that defies the size. would take these over towers any day

Cons: this company fir the first time ever...left me very sad

Other Thoughts: without any advanced warning 31 hours after I purchased these amazing speakers the price dropped 40.00$! I have spent thousands through this site and id think that my money should warrant a notice of sale items before it happens...still happy I bought these gems!!

4 out of 5 eggsGood value for money.

Pros: Purchased for a second system. Break-in period was 100+ hours. Tweeter will sound harsh if used with an inferior amp. Suggest N.A.D. or tube amp. Impressive for the price. As with most speakers with metal tweeters, allow time for break-in.

Cons: Aluminum tweeter can be strident with improper partnering of amp.

4 out of 5 eggsNot quite a winner.

Pros: Natural bass. Beautiful mid-range. Excellent build quality. Captivating sound-stage and imaging.

Cons: Distorted high frequencies.

Other Thoughts: These speakers to me are like my favorite Olympic runner, who almost takes the gold and then stumbles and falls in the final sprint to the finish line. I really was rooting for them but they let me down in the treble. Upper piano notes sound like shattering glass. I'm a piano player and can't tolerate listening to jazz recordings if the instruments are distorted in the upper frequencies. Everything else from mid-range on down to the bass sounds fantastic. It's too bad, they could have been a champion, yet fell short.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Easily the best sounding speakers I've ever owned. Surprisingly small and sound like tower speakers. Highs are crisp and clean without being painful. Mids sound enormous. Excellent bass fresh from the box. Can feel it in the floor 15 feet away and sounds superb and they aren't even broken in yet. Sound blends perfectly.

I robbed newegg blind for what I paid for these.

Cons: Over the years, I've read dozens of highbrow sounding speaker reviews. Words in them like "articulation" and "fluidity" and other seemingly meaningless adjectives. What is all that stuff supposed to mean? Now I understand all those snob reviews.

Curse you Def Tech for making me an audio snob!

Other Thoughts: These little beasts chewed up and spit out Slayer, Testament, Arch Enemy, and Strapping Young Lad and said "That all you got, ya bum!?"
