3 out of 5 eggsNot enough RAM and can't add drives.

Pros: Nice sale price, good processor, quiet.

Cons: 4Gb RAM not enough for Windows.
Proprietary power cable doesn't allow adequate expansion for drives and can't find additional cable to buy - big problem.

Other Thoughts: I run this computer with Ubuntu instead of MS Windows and it works well with the 4Gb.

4 out of 5 eggsso far so good

Pros: Got this because I had an earlier version of this gateway that I bought from NewEgg and loved it. This is fast and works as expected. My first gateway PC from Newegg was a refurbished 3rd gen I3 PC, with 6gb of ram, I loved it so I figured I would try out this I5 (albeit with less ram. If it gets bogged down, I will buy more ram, but not until it gets bogged down.)

Cons: WIndows 8.1. Annoying that it asks you to create a windows login, however, you can bypass this. Simply choose to create an account., Then at the bottom choose to create a local only account. I still don't like doing that either. Going to go with unbuntu operating system someday, but its been forever since I have used linux.

5 out of 5 eggsA sweet little PC at a great price

Pros: This is a sweet little desktop. Cheapest 4th generation Core i5 I found. Very peppy, even with the 4GB installed. The 4GB uses one slot, and there are 3 slots to expand. Max 32GB, but with 3 cheap 4GB DIMMs it can be a 16GB powerhouse.

The 1TB drive is generous and peppy

2x easily accessible front USB 3 ports and card readers

Fans are quiet, even under load.

Ran a virtualbox VM and Windows 8 together with no worries.

Seagate internal drive works well with the free Seagate Discwizard for cloning operations.

Cons: No DVI port: Has DisplayPort, HDMI and VGA. HDMI to DVI adapters are very cheap, though, and most monitors these days have HDMI anyway.

Proprietary power supply/motherboard, hard to upgrade. 300W will not power a gaming class video card, so this is not a desktop for heavy duty, power hungry video.

The Acer crapware is tiresome, but easy to uninstall.

Only 4 USB ports on the back, but hubs are cheap.

No PS/2 ports - specs are incorrect

Other Thoughts: I would recommend this PC to replace any aging desktop. Migration of files from systems older than Windows 7 will not work (Thanks, Microsoft) without 3rd party utilities. I had to manually migrate profiles from an old Vista machine.

Overall, not a perfect machine, but a superb value for the price for non-gaming medium-duty use.

3 out of 5 eggsAlright but not WiFi/Bluetooth card.

Pros: It's fast enough for whatever I've thrown at it.

Cons: The specs say that this computer has a WiFi/Bluetooth card, yet it does not.

Other Thoughts: Pretty good computer overall. Just prepare to purchase a USB WiFi adapter or a WiFi card.

1 out of 5 eggsGateway DX4885 No Bargain

Pros: Quiet fan; Flawless upgrade to Windows 8.1.

Cons: After a little over a month of use, the log-on screen flashes on and off making it impossible to log-on. Suspect it is a video problem, but I haven't been able to figure it out.

5 out of 5 eggsbest bang for the buck

Pros: You're not going to get a better computer at this price.

To my surprise, the computer runs very well and is very fast. It's quiet. It exceeded my expectation in every way. I was thinking about adding a SSD to speed the computer up, but after setting it up I saw no need for that.

Hdmi works great. Four USB 3.0 ports. 7200rpm 1T hhd.

Cons: None yet.

The tower is rather large but you should already know that. The keyboard and mouse each took up a USB port, there are 6 todal so there's four left. There's only 4 FB of ram but you can't complain for the price.

Other Thoughts: Buy it. It's a great machine at a bargain.

2 out of 5 eggsShould have done more research...

Pros: It works. I up'd the ram to 8gb and the system runs fast. Good processor for the money.

Cons: Proprietary garbage! psu/mobo has a proprietary power connector which is just plain stupid. Only two sata power plugs used by the existing hdd and optical drive. Guess I could buy splitters but what I'd really like is to put a better psu in.

Other Thoughts: I've built systems for myself/clients so I didn't even think about the proprietary plugs but a client needed a new computer setup asap and bought this based on some basic hardware benchmarks, now I'm worried if anything goes wrong or want to make hardware changes I'll be limited to using Gateway/Acer's tech department.

1 out of 5 eggsDesigned to thwart upgrades

Pros: Acceptable performance, quiet.

Cons: The specs show it has an open PCI Express slot for a graphics card, but the PSU does not have a single spare connection. In fact, you would need a proprietary power cable for the motherboard just to add a hard drive.

You cannot replace the PSU because the motherboard has a proprietary 12 pin connection. So this PC is designed specifically to thwart upgrades.

Down the road, these products will be in service for far shorter period than conventional PCs (no doubt by design) because they cannot be upgraded. This increases the cost of ownership, and has negative environmental impacts as well.

Other Thoughts: I will avoid the Gateway / Acer products altogether from now on, and I advise you do so as well.
