5 out of 5 eggsGreat little PC

Pros: Fast running MS Office. VERY quiet. I dampened the inside of the case with Dynamat and now it is almost silent.
Comes with Windows 7 installed [not 8 :) ]

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Buying 2 more of the current model

1 out of 5 eggsTerrible

Pros: Seemed like a good combination of price and options, but eventually disappointed.

Cons: The power switch broke within the first month. Two months ago, it stopped booting. When I press the power switch, it powers on and then immediately back off endlessly. It doesn't seem to make it to POST.

3 out of 5 eggsGood Computer - Poor Case Quality

Pros: Good price for the specs.
Windows 7

Cons: Case construction very poor quality. Power button stopped working after third push. Plastic piece that held the power switch wasn't designed very well (it wouldn't hold power switch in place - thats why it stopped working).

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Just fine

Pros: Nice sturdy build, fast boot up once you get rid of the bloatware, all my devices work with it, quiet fan, no beeping, no blinding LED lights, after I set it up it has been a pleasure to use. I am happy with it.

Cons: The rubber feet on the bottom of mine were not even, i stuck a few business cards under one side, its fine, nothing to do a RMA over.

Other Thoughts: If ASUS or someone could send me some extra rubber feet, that would be nice.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat WMC HTPC when combined with a SiliconDust HDHomerun Prime

Pros: Replacing my cable box! Windows 7 PRO has media center included. This PC can record 3 HD channels at once from a Silicondust HDHomerun Prime.

1TB drive to hold those recordings while I save up for more storage.

Quiet and cool. The air coming out of the PSU fan doesn't feel warm at all. I can hear some fan noise when it's sitting in the middle of the living room (i.e. when I was installing updates and getting it ready) but after putting it in it's new home between the couch and wall, under an end table it is inaudible.

Nice enough case, and I like the door over the optical drive. Smaller than my old computer so it takes up less room in the living room, but room for some more drives. Small enough to keep under a living room end table while still getting enough air flow for cooling.

This computer and the SiliconDust HDHomerun Prime will pay for themselves in less than a year.

Cons: Can't encode and edit a WTV file while recording 3 HD shows at the same time. But it's an i3 at 2.9 GHZ with one, 4 GB stick of ram, so that is hardly a con.

1 HDMI and 1 VGA. I would rather have either 2 HDMI or 1 HDMI and one DVI-D. I have HDMI to my TV and VGA to a monitor for when I need to do any 'maintenance' while the family uses the Roku.

6-channel through three, 3.5 mm ports. SPDIF or optical would have been better, but I'm using audio out over HDMI so it's not a big con for me.

I don't actually need or expect any features that I called 'cons', and I understand that they are either cost tradeoffs or low electricity trade offs, so I'm not deducting any eggs because I wanted a low cost system, low energy, quiet system.

Other Thoughts: I got a refurbished machine. Based on the other reviews, I am guessing someone else returned this PC because the power button wasn't installed correctly. Hahahahahahahaha I saved $100 on a brand new, perfectly good 'refurbished' PC that never even got turned on. Plastic was still on the mouse, keyboard etc, and it came with the booklet and CD. I don't have a warranty, but after you deduct the cost of Windows 7 pro, I got the hardware for about $200. I can live without a warranty for that kind of savings.

4 out of 5 eggsAsus Desktop

Pros: Good specs for the price. I got it during the shell shocker deal.
I like the size of the machine. It's fairly small for a tower pc.

Cons: The stock intel CPU fan had a horrible clicking noise. I replaced it with a zalman cnps 8900 quiet. It's a great choice for a cooler but does block a ram slot on this motherboard.
The hard drive caused a lot of vibration noise with the computer case. I suspended the hard drive for now and will replace it with a sdd later.
Weak inefficient PSU. I replaced it for my asus gtx 670 cu ii graphics card. This graphics card caused noise on the headphone jack from interference. I resolved this issue by using using the headphone jack on the speakers connected to the back of the computer.
No exhaust case fan and the location for a front intake fan is ineffective due to the design of the front panel. Installed a Noctua NF-B9 PWM 92mm Case Fan for the exhaust.

Other Thoughts: After the work I put into the system I'm pleased with it.

3 out of 5 eggsDOA

Pros: Price if Rebate goes thru. Inside the case is fairly simple. Service/repair should not be a problem.

Cons: I opened the case (yes in spite of the warranty sticker). Green LED lit so power was getting thru to mother board. discovered that the off/on switch was not installed properly in the front face cover. Reseated the on/off button to the face cover. Walla! It powered up. So far everything is running normally. Motherboard is variation of an ASUS H81M-A board. No W7 system disk. You have to make a back image file. If you want a W7 system disk, ASUS will sell you one for $50.

Other Thoughts: pasted UPS shipping label over 3/4 of NPC label, making applying for the rebate kind of tough. After talking to customer service at, they advised me to cut out all the labels (one piece anyway) and send it to ASUS. Newegg customer service said they would make some sort of arrangements if ASUS did not accept the rebate.

3 out of 5 eggstoo many DOAs

Pros: No pros on the unit as the machine was DOA as with several other reviewers. Otherwise, looks like a decent PC for the money. Newegg handled the return in a very professional way and without any cost to me. They do stand behind what they sell. Kudos. New one was FedExed immediately after the return was processed, so we'll see.

Cons: Poor quality control. Looks like I'm not the only one to get a "stiff". That is surprising for a company like Asus. Warranty seal is ridiculous, no upgrades for a year. Didn't find a Windows installation disk, so hopefully won't have to reinstall the OS.

Other Thoughts: Three eggs only for customer service. DOA doesn't warrant any rating on the machine at the moment.

3 out of 5 eggsDOA

Pros: Nice looking box. Seems well constructed. Specs are good for what it is purposed for - I am not looking for a gaming machine.

Excellent RMA service from Newegg representative.

Cons: Machine would not fire up - either bad power supply or on/off switch.

ASUS would RMA direct, but I would have to pay for return shipping to them - bad move.

Computer out of stock at Newegg and cannot say if or when more
will come in.

Lost $50 MIR special.
Extended 2 (TWO) year warranty was only $50 - also lost

Review of the box shows that indeed no case fan front or back (shine a flashlight in to see what's going on without breaking the warranty seal). Stupid seal - what about adding more memory, video card, HDD or anything else - have to wait a year??? Dumb!! No DVI connector not a big deal for me.

Other Thoughts: While it is a bummer that the computer was DOA, it was made easier by the Newegg rep who handled this return. Over an hour on the phone to see what he could do for me. Eventually struck a deal on the AMD version of this machine. Extended 1 (ONE) year warranty now $45 - see Cons above.

This review doesn't warrant any egg rating at all given the DOA status and the loss of MIR and Extended Warranty and ASUS 'deal' on me having to pay to return their defective item to them for repair or replacement....... Really ASUS a defective machine that I cannot open without voiding the warranty!!

So on the computer - I would award 0 eggs.

However, I would award 5 eggs to the rep who handled this RMA for me - he really went above and beyond - really nice to be treated well in this day and age. And although I didn't get to be in exactly the same position as the original purchase, his handling and demeanor softened the impact somewhat and I was reasonably satisfied with the outcome in the end.
