Question 1

It says this will track distance.  Is the GPS function built in or does it require a phone for tracking distance?  I'm hoping it doesn't use a stand alone pedometer to estimate distance...

Oops wrong device .. I was talking about a car DVR ... the gps hooks thru the phone ... but it is able to count paces for distance ... ie pedometer ... without the phone

Do you need to pay a monthly fee for it?

There is no monthly fee. It works well as described. One fact to keep in mind is that the watch interacts with your phone via bluetooth and this is a significant drain on the battery. So you either have to keep you phone well charged or turn off that aspect. The pedometer, etc. works fine with bluetooth turned off.

Question 3

How does the wrist band hold up? By the looks of the photographs (haven't seen one in person) it looks as though the clasp could easily come loose and isn't very secure (ex: when you're getting things from a coat pocket or reaching into a purse). TIA!

I had a garmin fitness band before I had the Samsung. The garmin uses a similar clasp that continually came loose on me and within a week I had lost it. I've had the Samsung for a while now (a few months) and it's only come loose on me once.

It uses bluetooth. No only android phone works with gear fit. (You need little bit of hacking if your android phone is not samsung. But it works)

I think it is but I don't really know. I know the app manager required is in google play therefore I assume it should be compatible.

Its approx 9.5 around, I also have a hard time and it fits loose on me!

It's water resistant,  not proof. I remember reading a Samsung document when I got mine that specifically states not to swim or shower with it on and if you get it wet take it off and dry it. Because of the sensitive circuitry they had to make it resistant so if you are wearing it while it's raining you're fine but don't go diving with it on. It's a great watch though, I love it.
