4 out of 5 eggsGood Value TV

This review is from: LG 47LB5900 47" Class 1080p 120Hz LED HDTV

Pros: This is a big value size tv, sure its not a smart 3d tv or 4k, but its also 200 to 1000 dollars cheaper then those tv's. It is 1080P however, and its cheaper and lighter then a plasma. The contrast is amazing on this tv , it gets very bright, so bright I had to actually turn the brightness down it was hurting my eyes. The screen is very clear and crisp for an LED, and the colors are almost as good as a plasma, I only had to raise the color 5-points. The tv has many adjustable picture options, I recomend disabling dynamic contrast and setting the contrast manually.

I was looking for the resolution setting until I discovered that the tv automatically detects the resolution being inputted and adjusts accordingly without any interaction from me, sweet. The tv's built in speakers are better then I expected, especially after adjusting the speaker settings, to provide highs and lows. However, the speakers are not that great and I still recommend a better surround sound speaker system with good bass.

This tv has only 1 digital output, and if you have an older speaker system as I do, you need a digital to anolog converter box so that you can hookup to older RCA or 3.5mm headphone jack. It also has 2 HDMI inputs, 1 composite input for older xbox360 for example. And its got your standard coaxal connection for cable and a USB port for a flash drive. This tv weighs 28-pounds and I have this wall mounted using the VideoSecu tilting wall mount, also sold on Newegg.

I do prefer a black tv, but I don't mind the silver at all, it has a very small bezel, which means you get the full 47" The remote sensor and speakers are at the bottom of the tv, so take that into account wherever you put the tv.

Cons: While the tv is crisp, clear, bright, and colorful, the black level is not as good as a plasma but its not bad. And while this is only noticable on a dark screen, I notice backlight artifacting on the bottom of the screen, again not noticable when lit. Although, when screen is lit, I notice miner shadowing on the edges of the screen, I've learned that this is common with edge lit tv's. Again, its a value tv, so you can't expect 4K plasma goodness lol.

I am annoyed that this tv only comes with a digital optical audio ouput, it assumes everybody has the latest speaker systems, which is dumb. It causes you to have to buy a 30 dollar converter box just to hookup older speaker systems. Also, if your converter box uses PCM' then you have to change your audio digital output mode on your tv to PCM in order to hear sound through your external speakers.

Other Thoughts: FYI, lowering backlight seems to help with the edge shadowing and dark artifacting. Here are some of the settings that worked best for me. Start by selecting APS preset. Then disable dynamic contrast, but put dyamic colors on medium. Set energy saving to off. Set backlight to 50, contrast to 70, brightness to 50, sharpness to 25, color to 60. color temp between C2 to C20. Make sure black level is set to low, best black level. ;)

All in all, I think this is an excellent value tv, its pretty much the best value for your money you are going to get with this size of tv. I've been using this tv to watch blueray's, game on xbox360, and also game as well as surf the web with my computer. I also have a tablet I have connected to it, all input methods work well. The refresh rate works well, I never noticed any motion blurr. If you can get over the fact that the screen is not perfect, and you want a good tv that won't break the bank, I'd choose this one. 4 out of 5

4 out of 5 eggsPretty good for the price

This review is from: LG 47LB5900 47" Class 1080p 120Hz LED HDTV

Pros: This was my first flatscreen LCD, so I didn't wanna spend too much money on it.
Very easy and quick to set up
Decent picture quality
Picture calibration quick and easy

Cons: Only 2 HDMI ports
The 2 near edge stands make it unsuitable for narrow tables;Should have a center stand

Other Thoughts: No complaints so far, very good for the price, satisfied.
Was kinda having second thoughts after I read some negative reviews regarding color contrast, black not being perfect black, etc. but I think these are technicalities. If calibration done right, these issues are not apparent and you can have a good experience.

5 out of 5 eggsReally sharp TV.

This review is from: LG 47LB5900 47" Class 1080p 120Hz LED HDTV

Pros: The images are sharp. The colors are good. The price is excellent.

Cons: As usual, you're better off connecting the TV to some kind of external speaker system than using the built in speakers. But that's kind of what you would expect from any TV anyway,.
