It works but... 05/06/2008
This review is from: Cobra 5.0" GPS Receiver
Pros:
Excellent display size, and the auto-brightness feature is very good. Takes a little while to learn, and the on-board help functions work well for most things. Accuracy seems to be excellent at +/- 15-20 feet. Traffic info reception also works very nicely, and has helped me quite a bit. The POI database even allows for searching by phone number. I do general construction for a living, and this is mounted in my work truck. I consider it an indispensable part of my equipment now.
Cons:
The POI database needs updating, but there seem to be no updates beyond August of 2006. Has an annoying tendency to want to take any road that goes to the right, then rejoin the main road. (It keeps wanting me to drive through the entrance driveway loop of a local school) You cannot purchase extended traffic subscriptions for this unit through the Cobra website. It can only be done via telephone during regular business hours, which is a pain. The onboard help information completely overlooks some features, and they are not mentioned in the documentation, making them "mystery options". Can be programmed to avoid specific roads, but does not save that info for future use.
Overall Review:
Overall, I love this unit, but hate the lackluster customer support from Cobra. Several emails about this product, posted via their own web site, have gone ignored for months now.
Based on the quality of the unit itself I'd rate it 4 eggs, but the customer service problems with Cobra drop it to three.
One more thing, this is NOT suitable for large commercial vehicles, as there is no way to program the unit to to avoid truck restricted roads unless you know them in advance.
