5 out of 5 eggs Very Good Value 11/28/2012

This review is from: Rosewill RLFL-11004 1W 70 Lumens LED Head Lamp

Pros:

Great brightness with fresh batteries. Weaker batteries will give fair light for hours and hours. Excellent for working on things with your hands. 3 angle settings (straight, lower, and lowest). Batteries in the back balance it and with the over head strap and padded front mount I forget I'm wearing it. Its 3 AA batteries go twice as long as 3 AAAs. Most head lamps use AAAs. The overhead strap helps. I'd prefer the weight and the strap (and double run time) to a tighter headband with all the weight on the front. The straps are a durable elastic/cotton blend I think. Keeps sweat out of my eyes. I never use it but the flashing mode is a good attention getter and it flashes much brighter on low batteries than the constant on setting. The gap between flashes lets the batteries recover. I bet it would go a VERY long time just flashing. I'm guessing 48 hours maybe 2x that depending on battery type (Alkaline, Ni-Cd, Ni-Mh rechargeables).

Cons:

Not too many but it has a few. I gave it 5 eggs/stars due to the pros and the price. The light cannot be focused but like I said in the pros it has three settings vertically. That leads me to a downside. After using it for like a year with the light on the lowest/closest aiming point the pin came out of the hinge (the light assembly hinges on the bottom front). I used it without for a few days until I found it. Put it back and seems fine now. The pin was plastic and seemed to "click" into place. Maybe I dropped it. Not a big deal after a year. New batteries are really bright but as they wear the brightness goes too. However, I didn't even notice it until after about 10 months I thought it was too dim. I put in new batteries and was stunned at how bright it was. I've never run it flat out dead. I think it would take a couple days. I think that is a con with any flashlight. Max brightness doesn't last long. The entire light assembly is plastic. I would not call it fragile or rugged. If you dropped it on cement and the battery pack landed on the front piece you might crack the lens or housing and the lens might fall out. I haven't treated it gently but I'm not a rock climber either. The unit as a whole weighs more than some just because of the AA batteries. I have no idea how it would perform if dropped in water or rained on.

Overall Review:

Beats the other cheap ones hands down. Great value. I have one and my son is getting one for Christmas. Never have to ask anyone to hold a light for you again. I use mine nearly every day. Rosewill stuff has never failed me.
