Dead after not even a year it beeped one day then long beep and smelt smoke

Thank you for your review on the CyberPower CP425SLG. The issue you describe is not typical. The CP425SLG is only able to handle a maximum of 255 watts - the equivalent of an entry level PC and monitor. It's possible you may have overloaded the unit. With that being said, if the UPS is defective CyberPower has a 3 year warranty on all of our UPS models and it even includes the battery.
