Fix for Windows Update problem (Dec 2014) 12/10/2014
This review is from: Windows 7 Professional SP1 64-bit
Pros:
See below for windows update fix.
Cons:
In Dec 2014, I had a problem with Windows Update where 14 updates kept failing. On the first call to MS support, the tech said that this OEM license was not supported on a desktop and I should get Windows 8! Yes, that's actually what he said.
The second tech was more helpful. He uninstalled update 3004394, then hid it so Windows Update would stop asking to install it. He then unchecked all the non-security updates at the bottom of the update list and installed the checked updates. Those went through. He then installed the remaining updates (but not the 3004394 update).
The 3004394 is a root cert manager update and it seems important. I ended up installing it as a standalone update (not via Windows Update) and it seemed to be OK. This is probably a temporary issue that will be resolved in the next couple of weeks, but I wanted to document it just in case it could save someone else the hours I have spent on it.
