Very Quiet

Western Digital Caviar SE WD3200JS 320GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Hard Drive Bare Drive
Western Digital Caviar SE WD3200JS 320GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: I bought this drive to serve as a secondary storage drive. My main criteria were that it had to 1) work without errors, and 2) most importantly had to be QUIET. My current Dell 4700 is extremely quiet except if the processor fan kicks in when gaming. This drive produces almost NO noise on it's own (certainly less than anyone's most quiet power supply and processor fans). It's pretty fast to for a 8MB cache. I chose this drive over the 16MB cache YS version because it's supposed to run quieter and cooler. See comments on temperature below.

Cons: I'd give this a 5, however, I wouldn't say that any 7200RPM drive >250G runs "cool". I first mounted this inside the case piggy-backed onto another 160GB drive (my only choice). It ran at least 55C, and caused my processor fan to kick in right away (which defeated the purpose of trying to get a quiet drive). I've since purchased an external Hard Drive case to mount the drive into (Vantec Nextar eSATA), which has brought the temperature down to the more respectable 40-47C range even without a fan. Now, all is well and I can't hear noise.

Overall Review: I'm sure that this drive might do better when mounted inside the case as a STAND-ALONE drive. I would not recommend piggybacking two large drives, especially in a case with not much active cooling like my Dell.

Quiet, but not not totally silent.

Noctua NF-P12 PWM, Premium Quiet Fan, 3-Pin (120mm, Brown)
Noctua NF-P12 PWM, Premium Quiet Fan, 3-Pin (120mm, Brown)

Pros: Good combination of airflow, static pressure, and quietness. At 900 RPM, it's almost silent - all you will hear is the sound of air being blown, but parctically no vibration or buzzing. At 1000 RPM, the sound is a little bit louder but still bearable. Again, mostly the sound of air blowing. At full speed 1200 RPM, you can hear it for sure. I don't believe anyone who says this fan at full speed is completely silent. It can't be with all of that air flowing and fans spinning.

Cons: The color is not the greatest. The cable length (minus the low noise adapters) is not the longest, and thus might be too short if you want to have good cable management and still get to the otherboard connectors.

Overall Review: Know what you need before you get it. This fan works pretty well as an intake fan for something where you still want quiet performance. If you need more airflow such as when you have a harddrive cage to blow through, there are better suited fans such as the F12 series.

The quiet and clean Beast

Corsair Obsidian Series 550D Black Aluminum / Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
Corsair Obsidian Series 550D Black Aluminum / Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Pros: Easy to build in. Motherboard mounts up easily, with no standoffs need for installation. The backplate is cutout so you can install an aftermarket CPU cooler with a MOBO installed. 6 HDD/SSD slots, divided into two cages. The middle cage is removable to allow for better cooling. Fans are almost silent at idle, not annoying at all. Doors are easily removed and attached. DVD/CD drives sit flush against the front, no mismatch. With everything installed and closed, it is VERY quiet. But certainly not silent.

Cons: The area where the MOBO mounts may be a little tight for any ATX MOBO that has the SATA connectors that lay flat at the bottom right hand corner. This may block SATA slot #1 for a larger (non-standard) ATX format. Fans - not the best, not the worst, just average.

Overall Review: It's large. Know that coming in. It may be fine if that's what you want, but if you are looking for a smaller mid-ATX case, this may be too big for your taste. This case will help silent whisper-quiet components, as well as help tame those that are fairly quiet. For a GPU running at full fan speed, this won't block out all the noise, but a good chunk of it.

Cool and Quiet

Noctua NH-U14S, Premium CPU Cooler with NF-A15 140mm Fan (Brown)
Noctua NH-U14S, Premium CPU Cooler with NF-A15 140mm Fan (Brown)

Pros: Runs cool. With my 4670k CPU chip overclocked to 4.2 Ghz, I am getting mid 50C at load (not benchmark but actual use). Benchmarks run higher depending on what you use. When overclocked to 4.4 Ghz, I'm at mid 60C. Easy to install, and extremely quiet. The fan is PWM controlled, so it runs almost silent at idle. At full load, it's noticeable but certainly not loud or annoying. The included installation brackets and tools are great, as well as the thermal paste. Great alternative for those who don't want to venture into liquid coolers.

Cons: The size of this cooler will definitely block PCI-E slot #1 (closest to CPU). RAM slot #1 may also be blocked if you use RAM with taller heatsinks. With low profile RAM, it works no problem. This fits easily with my MSI Z87-G45 motherboard, with low profile in RAM slot 1. The overall size may not work in some cases. This all fits fine into my Corsair 550D case, no problem. Most people don't like the color of the fan. I don't hate it, but I don't care for it.

Overall Review: In my build with a Corsair 550D case and MSI Z87-G45 MoBo, it fits. Know what case and MoBo you want before buying, as well as RAM considerations.

MSI Z87-G45: Solid board, no issues

MSI Z87-G45 Gaming LGA 1150 Intel Z87 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Pro Gaming with Killer Networking & Sound Blaster Intel Motherboard
MSI Z87-G45 Gaming LGA 1150 Intel Z87 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Pro Gaming with Killer Networking & Sound Blaster Intel Motherboard

Pros: Solid stable setup with the following - Intel 4670k overclocked to 4.4Ghz, Noctua NH-U14S cooler, 8Gb Corsair Vengeance Low Profile RAM, 1 SSD, 2 HDD, 1 DVD RW, ASUS GTX 660 GPU. Voltages are stable, and the board recognized my RAM with XMP profile. The BIOS is pretty easy to use, with voltage and multiplier adjustments for OC'ing. And I find I can even control my 3-pin case fans (only 2 speeds) even though they aren't PWM. No issues with LAN/Network. No issues with USB3 (even when computer goes to sleep). No issues with flashing the BIOS. BIOS allows you to store separate OC profiles.

Cons: I would prefer if the SATA connectors were away from the edge of the board, but there aren't that many ATX boards that have this. I use this in a Corsair Obsidian 550D case, and with the SATA connectors laying flat and against the edge, it makes installing cables into the board a little tight against the back wall of the case motherboard mount. It still fits, it's just tight. Also, Ram slot #1 (closest to the CPU) is a little close to the CPU for a larger CPU cooler, but it still fits with my Noctua NH-U14S when using low profile RAM.

Overall Review: Rather than use the supplied CD to install the drivers, I downloaded them straight from the MSI website. Be sure to install not only the audio, chipset, USB 3.0, but the other Intel utilities as well. Otherwise you might have some conflicts showing in Device Manager.

Good router stock, solid with Tomato

Linksys WRT54GL 802.11b/g Wireless Broadband Router up to 54 Mbps/ Compatible with Open Source DD-WRT (not pre-load)
Linksys WRT54GL 802.11b/g Wireless Broadband Router up to 54 Mbps/ Compatible with Open Source DD-WRT (not pre-load)

Pros: As everyone has stated, upgradeable with 3rd party firmware. This allows for functions not available with stock Linksys firmware opening it up to more options. In stock configuration, works with my Dell laptop, Wii, PS3, iPhone. Wired connection does not suffer at all, when I compare it to plugging straight into the Cable modem. My previous router ran slower when connected.

Cons: With stock Linksys firmware, it's nothing really special. Compared to my previous other WGR614 router, the signal was no stronger; in fact a little bit weaker and had the tendency to disconnect intermittently when downstairs (router is upstairs) and was more sensitive to which channel it was on unlike the other router. Once I got the right channel dialed in, it helped stay connected better. Once I installed Tomato firmware and increased my transmit power, it improved a bit more.

Overall Review: I had to replace my trusty WGR614 router after it crapped out after about 3 years. I bought this based on the positive reviews as well as the possibility of upgrading the firmware. I kept this stock for at least 4 weeks to make sure it wasn't defective and didn't require resetting due to getting bogged down. If you have to keep resetting, you've got a defective router as that's not normal. I've loaded Tomato 1.25 Firmware and am pretty pleased. With the transmit power at 65mW and the right channel (we have up to WIFI access points in my area), I get solid signal on both floors of the house. I can't comment on this Firmware being much more stable than stock, since stock ran solid for me.
