2 out of 5 eggsHorrible

Pros: Plays some videos.

Cons: Everything, where do I start. I go to play a video no sound. I try it on my computer works perfectly fine. This goes for .avi and .mkv

Other Thoughts: I have a couple of friends with a modified Apple TV unit, I think I will be switching over to that.

4 out of 5 eggsI like the lil sucker

Pros: Small, glitch-less, quiet, does its job mostly transparently.

Cons: needs a friendlier interface (-1 star) It is a little slow reading (about 30 seconds) with my 1gig fantom drive attached but not really a problem

Other Thoughts: If I loose that little remote I hope I can get another. Not fond of the idea that machines have no controls other than remotes I guess.

1 out of 5 eggsRecertified = DOA

Pros: I have a WD TV Live myself that works great and I wanted to get one of these as a gift. I ordered the recertified one for a good price.

Cons: The remote on the one I received does not work. I tried brand new batteries and still nothing. This unit is impossible to use without the remote, so it's basically worthless. Don't know if RMA would come back in time for Christmas. Major disappointment.

Other Thoughts: WD should test this stuff if they are going to call it "recertified".

2 out of 5 eggsTerrible for HD TV / Good for low quality TV

Pros: After purchasing 5 of these including a Plus model, I have come to the conclusion that this is a very "okay" product. IT has its limits and it wont take you long to notice them if you are like me.

The Pros:
It is cheap and great only if you want your simple red white and yellow hookup to your TV to play all sorts of files. It is great at this (other than the clunky interface) and is why I have gotten them for my family members.

Cons: Support above 720p is extremely difficult to maintain if you ever turn the power off. To use this device in 1080p you will need to pull the power cord 5-10 times and swiftly change the video setting from auto (which it resets to every time) before it goes black.

This is an extremely common problem in their community forums and no response in the last 5 months.

DTS incompatible. If you have high quality files with DTS sound, this will not work for you unless you buy a speaker system with an HDMI repeater built in.

Other Thoughts: 2 stars, 1 for ease of use and the other for the amount of files types it supports. -1 stars for not common playing DTS sound, -1 for 1080p, 1080i issues, and -1 for poor support.

5 out of 5 eggsWD Media Player

Pros: Great little unit! I download episodes of Top Gear to my 4 GB usb stick, plug it into the player, and it plays them flawlessly. I couldnt tell it was refurbished except for the fingerprints and a small scratch on top of the unit. The remote was like new with the batteries. Came with everything except the manual which was no big deal since I already downloaded that from the WD website.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: Gonna buy a WD external hard drive and see how many movies I can fit on it. Totally silent, but the two front lights on it are a little bright, no biggie.

1 out of 5 eggsNo audio on MKV files

Pros: Nice compact unit and will work with most files

Cons: Will not work with MKV files, has no sound video only
WP does not update this 1st generation Player anymore, so don't waster your money on this Player.

Other Thoughts: Purchase the newer WD TV Live Media Player. It is still being updated

5 out of 5 eggsGreat product, great price

Pros: I love the WD media player!! This little box hooks up to my TV and plays pretty much every format I can throw at it. HD MKV files look gorgeous. The firmware is great too - just make sure to download and upgrade to the latest version, which is provided free on WD's website. And the price - if you don't mind a used product (mine was lightly used) is unbeatable! Thanks Newegg!!

Cons: None.

4 out of 5 eggsGood player

Pros: I've ordered two of these. They play almost all formats and the picture looks great. I've added a hacked firmware and a USB dongle and can play movies over the network. MKV, AVI, WMV, and ISOs of DVD have all played perfectly. The tiny footprint is great!

Cons: Beware -- the first one was DOA, and took about 2 weeks to get replaced AND it cost about an extra ten bucks for the privilege of shipping it back. DTS files will need to be converted unless you use the TOSLINK output to your receiver. Cases tend to be scratch up, but hey, these are refurbed.

Other Thoughts: You just can't beat the price for a player of with HDMI output that supports such a ridiculous number of formats. Would definitely be 5 stars if one hadn't been DOA.
