2 out of 5 eggsThe Big Crash

Pros: That it's a 500GB storage device.

Cons: After using the hard drive for 7 months, it completely crashed and gave the clicking sound of death. Also how it's an OEM and not a retail.

5 out of 5 eggsVery Nice :)

Pros: Excellent quality and sapce for the price. I got this because I had needed plenty of space for my video editing work, and it suits my needs flawlessly.

Cons: Um, nothing at the moment. It runs a little hot, but nothing to worry about.

Other Thoughts: Get this! It's good in every way plausible. :)

4 out of 5 eggsran hot, failed after two weeks

Pros: very quiet
sata II readyness
3-year warranty better than most

Cons: rans hot in 1.5gb mode
tiny jumper with no handle
Doesn't match a competitors 7-yerar warranty

Other Thoughts: I attempted to use this in 1.5gb mode. It seemed okay, but ran very hot. It quit working after a couple of weeks. That's normal for a lot of defective electornics though; if they quit at all it's usually right away.

I'm replacing with the same model and will review the next one for temperature when it arrives.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat drive

Pros: I have two of these drives in my system now, and they both work very well. This 3.0 Gb drive is surely faster than the older 1.5 Gb/s ones, as long as your motherboard or SATA PCI card supports the higher speed.

Cons: If using the drive at 1.5 Gb/s for any reason, be sure to switch the jumper to that setting first. This should've been automatic.

Other Thoughts: If migrating from a smaller drive on a Windows OS, try using Norton Ghost or Symantec LiveState Server to copy over all the data. It'll do it much faster than Windows, and without hogging the system.

4 out of 5 eggsLots of storage, but treat genty!

Pros: This is a good, fast, quiet hard drive. I am using two as a RAID array, and they are performing just fine.

Cons: One of the drives started acting up, so I unplugged it to see if there was anything amiss. THE PINS FELL OUT! Newegg very quickly replaced the drive, but the SATA interface is not as robust as PATA, so be really careful when you install this drive. And once it's in. leave it there!!

Other Thoughts: I've used a number of these Maxtor SATA drives, this is the first one that has gone bad on me. It was a manufacturing defect, the plastic ridge that protects the pins had fallen off. Very unusual.

But this underscores the truith that it is not a question of IF a drive will fail, it's a question of WHEN a drive will fail. Always back up your data. This was half of a RAD 1 array, all I lost was some time as the drive was replaced. But someday, everybody's going to lose data unless everyting is backed up!

5 out of 5 eggsNice Addition to a PowerMac G5

Pros: Mucho storage, fast, quiet, great price, great service from Newegg.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I purchased this drive to add additional internal storage to my PowerMac G5. It works great, and is just as quiet as the stock 250 GB drive provided by Apple (the latter being a Maxtor DiamondMax 10).

Highly recommended!
