User error is usually the cause of problems
- Pros: This board is great. Great layout. Its smaller than my last board and doesnt have a noisy fan.
- Cons: Only 1 IDE connection. Only a con if you dont have sata drives.
- Other Thoughts: User error is usually the cause of the problems I read in the reviews below. I know why your ram didnt work, because your ram voltage wasnt set correctly. You have to do this manually. It defaults to 1.8V, my OCZ platinum DDR2-800 is 2.1V. It would not load windows at 1.8V, I kept getting a stop error. Once set to 2.1V it worked like a charm.
Not bad... takes some work
- Pros: It is a good Motherboard. Now that I have it working properly I am very happy with it. I had an M S I board previously and it lasted me 5+ years, so I went with them again.
With 1.9V Corsair ram it booted fine, but have had some issues with ram speeds.
- Cons: M S I didn't have the proper raid drivers for the NForce 550 chipset. This caused some major headaches when trying to set up a raid. See other thoughts for the solution.
Had to update the BIOS. M S I's software made this rather simple.
My RAM originally read at 400 MHZ. After increasing the SB to CPU bus to 1000MHZ, the ram now reads at 533, but not 800 like it should. Still trying things with this. I'm hoping it will be resolved with a future update.
- Other Thoughts: My configuration: This board, AMD Atholon 64 X2 3800+, 2Gig Corsair TwinX DDR2 800 (1.9v), SATAII Raid0, MSI GForce 7900GT
I tried using the RAID drivers for NForce chips on MSI's site. These didn't work. You have to use the ones on the MoBo CD. Also, I slipstreamed the drivers into a WinXP install CD, as I read online that they are not Signed (NVidia's fault, not M S I's) so you might get a BSOD if you don't. I don't know if it would have just worked off the floppy.
Before updating to 1.3 firmware, I was getting a BSOD randomly. Now it seems to be fine, but I haven't used it super extensivly.
I'm pretty confident that future releases of this board with firmware 1.3+ should be fine.
The reason I'm giving it a good is that now that I have everything done, it works very quickly and very stable.
If you need some info on how to slipstream the drivers into WinXP, email me at breean1011@yahoo.com

Better than Expected
- Pros: This board is extremely stable with my setup. I use Linux and everything was detected and working fine out of the box. I have it running with OCZ SOE DDR2-667 RAM and an Opteron 1212 stable. The chipset does NOT get as hot as some people discribe. Just make sure you have a good, efficient, negative airflow. This will prevent any heat-pockets that may that may build up around the chipset, or anywhere in the case, causing a rise in temperature especially on the NB.
- Cons: The overclocking is limited to just FSB controls. Also you will want to check your BIOS right away because it may not set everything correctly. Make sure you check the RAM clockspeed, RAM voltages, and HT speeds as they may not be set to your hardware's maximum/rating (IE: DDR2-800 set to 667 or HT 1000 set to HT 800, etc). With a little tweaking, and a minute of your time, you will get things running correctly.
- Other Thoughts: It is also good practice to keep the BIOS up to date. I solved some initial problems with my opteron by flashing from v1.4 to v1.8.
Also the Dual-Channel setup is weird. Normally to get Dual-Channel with 2 sticks in Channel A, you would plug the modules in DIMMs 1+3 (they are also color coded; the same color). Well with this mobo I had to plug the modules in DIMMs 1+2 (which are different colors) to get Dual-Channel support.
great for it's price
- Pros: Great motherboard, silent, efficient, fast, and zero problems as always with MSI.
- Cons: This board is not made for overclocking it lacks of VCore control and it can go too far when overclocking.
Hit the Ground Running
- Pros: Overall it's a very good board. Out of the box everything fired up perfectly. The install went smoothly and the BIOS setup was a snap.
- Cons: The NB heatsink does get quite warm. If you are going to overclock in the slightest you need to replace the heatsink. There is a plug for a NB fan and the existing heatsink looks like it would be pretty easy to remove. If you aren't overclocking then its really nothing to worry about.
- Other Thoughts: As I said, it worked right out of the box. I wouldn't call it an overclocker's board because of the NB heatsink, but if you replace that, then you should do fine. Unlike a board I purchased back in November from another manufacturer, this one will take DDR2 800 without a problem. Not one BSOD yet and I've been trying! Also, I was concerned about the size of the NB heatsink in relation to the GPU, but there was no issue. However, if you place a new fan on the NB you will need to get one that will work around your GPU. Some sort of L shaped sink to get it out from under the GPU.
