4TB works great.... now
Pros: Works as advertised, now. I've always had good results with WD, especially the Black series. WD customer service is all you could ask for. Very pleased. Drive has been working just under a month now.
Cons: Unfortunately the first one was DOA. I called WD (not Newegg). I got thru to a real live human very quickly. WD cross-shipped a replacement. (I had to give them a credit card number of course.) No fuss, no muss.
Overall Review: In a perfect world, the first drive would have worked. In a near-perfect world, you will get a replacement quickly with no hassels at no additional cost. That is what happened this time and that is why I gave it 5 stars.
Not totally diasppointed
Pros: Well designed, laid out, and built. Exceptional array of I/O. (I selected this MB for the I/O). BIOS also well laid out and thorough.
Cons: MSI advertises 1DPC 1R Max speed up to 7600+ MHz in its Newegg ad. On its webside it spec's 1DPC 1R Max speed up to 7800+ MHz. For this build I selected G.Skill Trident F5-7600J3646G16GX2-TZ5RK. I was unable to get it to work above 7200 cl 36. So, I bought a second set. It too would not work above 7200 cl36. I checked the MSI memory QVL, and -- no shocker here -- I found that MSI has yet to approve any memory above 7200. (Yes, I should have looked there first; but I bought the MB for the I/O, not the memory speed.) (And yes, I loaded the latest BIOS 7D86v12.) I expect MSI to blame the memory controller on the Intel 13900k. But I don't buy it: MSI still has not put any memory above 7200 on their QVL. If they (MSI) are willing to send me a 13900 to test, I might think otherwise, but that's not likely. So my conclusion is that MSI over-promise and under-deliver on memory speed. You would not be wrong to think that at $699 plus tax, this should not be such a "gamble" (Newegg does not like the name of the common dice game I mentioned at first). MSI Center software: I started to load it, but it requires you to sign off on a truly draconian "no privacy" agreement that in effect would allow MSI to mine your computer for data. I deleted the software. Make sure you understand this agreement before you sign.
Overall Review: Except for the memory issues and the silly software agreement, I am very pleased with this board. If memory speed is important to you, I cannot recommend this MB. Still, at 7200, 36, and 1.42V this board is rock solid and everything else works to spec. Just a note: I have been buying from Newegg since 2003. I like working with them.
Needs a little help, but it can get there.
Overall Review: I bought this in hopes of taming my Intel i9-13900. With the three fans that come with the unit, it failed to do so. Using Aida 64 stress test, the H170i held off CPU throttling for a minute and 15 seconds. I was very disappointed. I did not however give up. I bought two 200 mm fans and set up a push-pull arrangement. That worked. My Raptor stayed a cool 95 degrees C for a full minutes of the stress test and never broke 85 degrees C on Cinebench. No throttling even when the Raptor drew 308 watts of power.
Great memory - Samsung B-Die - F4-4000C15Q-32GVK
Pros: Sub-60 ns latency High throughput
Cons: No surprise: won't go to 4000 on my Asus Crosshair VIII Hero MB. (Two modules will boot at XMP values, but four modules won't). Other reviewers have had the same problem of getting to 4000 on Ryzen 5000 builds. Seems like I'll have to buy a Crosshair VIII Hero Dark to get the most out of this memory. Very pricey.
Overall Review: As you can see from the Aida-64 bench mark report attached, this memory achieves excellent results. I'm thrilled. If you can afford it, buy it.
Wife Approved, Impressive Silence
Pros: Quiet. Solidly built. Thoughtfully built.
Cons: None
Overall Review: I'm mystified how Newegg could feature a negative review that calls this case a "banshee." I write it up to "operator error." I had this case in my family room for three years for family use. It was on most of the time. It was loaded with four hard drives and one SSD. If you knew my wife, you would understand how incredibly remarkable that is. She uses computers in her work all day, and she's the goto person for many of her colleagues for computer problems. That said, when it comes to home decorating, she believes that computers should be neither seen (absolutely no blinking lights!!) nor heard. And while it is hard to make a computer disappear, this case really comes close. That is no accident. Most internal surfaces are padded with sound deadening foam. All HDD's are mounted on sound deadening, vibration absorbing bushings. Fractal is justifiably famous for the quality and low noise level of its fans. And while we did have the occasional banshee in our family room, it never came from this case: The case just sat there hidden in plain view. The plain brushed surface of the front door and the remarkably solid build insured that all was quiet and unobtrusive. As for ease of use and air flow, there is nothing on the market that is better. I build gaming systems as a hobby. I've used cases from Thermaltake, Corsair, Rosewill, and others. So I can say with confidence that if you are looking for a solidly built, quiet, easy to configure case, you cannot beat this Fractal Design case.
Built well, works well
Pros: Cable is long enough for my full tower case.
Cons: None at all.
