High quality PSU

CORSAIR HX Series HX750 750 W ATX12V 2.3 / EPS12V 2.91 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Modular Active PFC Power Supply New 4th Gen CPU Certified Haswell Ready
CORSAIR HX Series HX750 750 W ATX12V 2.3 / EPS12V 2.91 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Modular Active PFC Power Supply New 4th Gen CPU Certified Haswell Ready

Pros: Solid, high-quality power supply. 750w of this PSU is probably worth 1000w from a lesser PSU. Plenty of connectors, no chance of confusing the different types. Captive mobo connectors have a subtly iridescent wrap that makes a big ugly bundle of wires look pretty cool. Packaging is impressive, not exactly essential but a good indication that Corsair is willing to go the extra mile.

Cons: Manual is not accurate. Referred to 'captive PCIe connectors' when there are only modular PCIe connections. I just love it when the documentation makes me think that I was given the wrong product... Mobo connectors are still a bit stiff, nothing serious but you may have to flex them a few times to get them going in the right direction. My mobo's EATX12V header ended up being as far as it could stretch.

Overall Review: Overall, I'm happy with the PSU and would recommend Corsair quality anytime...but this PSU didn't end up being ideal for my case (Antec Skeleton) because of size and fan placement. Likewise, the modular concept wasn't the clear win that I expected, but I might feel differently if I had four or five unused connectors to stuff in my case.

Nice feel, color not great

BlackBerry Red Skin For Curve HDW-13840-003
BlackBerry Red Skin For Curve HDW-13840-003

Pros: Good fit, decent protection, great sticky-friction feel.

Cons: More orange than red. Kind of a dull, not-quite-ripe plastic tomato red. I probably would swap it for the black one if I really cared about looks.

Overall Review: Does the job. Got here super fast, too -- ordered Friday, arrived Monday, no shipping cost. That's pretty cool.

Best Windows Yet?

Microsoft Windows 7 Professional 64-bit 1-Pack for System Builders
Microsoft Windows 7 Professional 64-bit 1-Pack for System Builders

Pros: Clean, customizable, and user-friendly. Vista was not worth giving up XP; Win7 (probably) is.

Cons: Switching to admin profile to do anything serious is kind of annoying, but it doesn't come up often. If I had more people around my PC I'd probably actually appreciate it. Not many of my apps actually benefit much from 64-bit. Maybe that will change. It's a bit harder to find & change some options compared to XP -- specifically, I had a little trouble with network and audio settings. But it didn't take long to get everything running smoothly. Takes up a fair amount of space on my 64GB SSD, even after trimming many unnecessary components.

Overall Review: I've been using Windows on and off ever since 3.1 (along with Mac and various Linux distros) and I've criticized Microsoft as much as anyone. But this is a good OS.

no worries so far

WD Caviar Black WD1002FAEX 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive
WD Caviar Black WD1002FAEX 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Big and fast and cheap.

Cons: Unsure if the occasional clicking is normal HDD activity or not...but no performance issues, so I'll let it go for now. Takes a second to read sometimes after a long period of inactivity, but still much faster than my old 1.5Gbit/s HDD. I totally skipped an SATA generation from my last PC to this one, so I can't personally confirm that it's much faster than a 3.0Gbit/s HDD.

Overall Review: In the past, I've had more problems with WD drives than I've had with Seagates, but I just couldn't resist the price + performance vs. cost ratio. If it holds out for over a year or two, I'll consider it totally worthwhile.

Fast, tight, kinda warm

G.SKILL PI Series 6GB (3 x 2GB) DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL7T-6GBPI
G.SKILL PI Series 6GB (3 x 2GB) DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL7T-6GBPI

Pros: Great memory for the price, and probably pretty darn good compared to many more expensive alternatives. Fast memory with tight timings. Looks pretty cool too.

Cons: Minor nitpicking: runs pretty cool, but not as cool as I'd have expected from the relatively big heatsinks. I've got plenty of air moving across them so I'm not even close to worried, but someone with a small, closed, cramped case could conceivably have issues. My Sabertooth X58 mobo memory profile didn't automatically set the correct timings. No big deal, as long as you know your BIOS.

Overall Review: Hard to get too excited about memory sticks, but I'm happy with my choice.

Fast, Small, Small

Crucial RealSSD C300 2.5" 64GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) CTFDDAC064MAG-1G1
Crucial RealSSD C300 2.5" 64GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) CTFDDAC064MAG-1G1

Pros: It's fast. I'm coming from a 1.5Gbit/s HDD system, so to me it's REALLY fast. Not sure how it actually compares to a 3.0 HDD or SDD, however, and write speed is actually about the same it was as my old rig. It's so small that the SATA cabling probably takes up more overall space in my case. No moving parts = low power requirements & no need for extra cooling.

Cons: Capacity is not great, but I knew that going in. After installing OS and a couple of apps (only ones that would benefit most from transfer rate), I was pretty much maxed. I'd intended to put as much as possible on my bigger (also 6.0Gbit/s) secondary HDD, but I forgot that many apps will take up space on the root drive -- no matter what options you choose during install. May require an extra bracket (or creativity) to mount securely in your case.

Overall Review: For me personally, it probably deserves 5 stars...but the write speed and small capacity are always going to be a negative consideration (unless you run only a smaller OS like Linux, and I'm not 100% sure it's supported).
