Question 1

Does the 'bare drive' package Newegg sells include mounting screws?  They're either not included (no separate package) or they come inserted into the drive.  Hard to tell from the pictures.

nope ,the hard drive does not comes with any hardware/screws, you use your old ones from your tower to install. at least on my tower .just make sure you install it right side up to prevent it from wearing out pre-maturely.also make sure your wiring harness has room once installed so it is not rubbing any other part of the computer especially your cooling fans. it only take about 15 minutes or less to remove and replace.hope this helped. oh and it comes shipped in a cardboard box with a really heavy duty bubble type envelope around it. so it should arrive in working condition in about 3-4 days usps. later

is this a New drive? in other words, this is not a used drive is it?

Yes it's new. What mine wasn't was retail, which means it comes in the manufacturer's graphic box , perhaps with cables (say) and instructions. If you're comfortable with hooking up , and you have, the SATA and power cables inside your machine and putting this in the hard disk tray then you're good to go.

One note: mine didn't come in a box , which would have ended up in the recycling bin, but it did come in something yet more wonderful, a kind of custom air pouch tough enough to not be popped without significant effort.

It's about the shape of the hard drive itself, with a "lid" of the same air-pouchy clear plastic hinges open and through which you extract the drive.

This pouch is interesting, and I kept it thinking it would be good for packing breakables during travel.

In fact I do use it for that, I have a hair clipper I take with me on long trips that has relatively delicate hard plastic combs which attach to it . I put them in this pouch and then pack them in my duffel bag - no worries.

This hard drive is 3.5" qnd is made for desktop computers. It will not work in a Gateway laptop. Look for WDBMYH0010BNC-NRSN instead or any of the 2.5" SATA notebook drives for a laptop computer.

Correct, this is a one TB drive. And yes it is possible to partition it. I don't know if you know this or not, but when installing Windows there is an option to partition the drive. There are other programs that will do that too. To answer your question, yes, you can partition it.

I recently bought this hardrive for A desktop. It is a great hard drive. Really fast. I do not know if it would fit into a lap top. I think it is too large but you need to ask an expert or pull the original out and compare specs and dimensions.

WesternDigital website describes the hdd color family as:
WD Blue™ - for solid reliability and everyday computing.

Based on this Hard Drive's size it would not fit in a laptop, as far as I know all laptop hard drive's are 2.5". This is 3.5" so unless you plan on connecting it externally using adapters I wouldn't recommend this for a laptop, at least not as the primary hard drive. I would double check everything I have said just to make sure though.

the spec you listed for your motherboard ( SATA 6Gb/s) inidcates it has a 6Gb per second port (or more)...  just make sure you plug it in the right port - most boards have some 6Gb/s and some slower ports.

Question 10

Would this be a suitable drive for a RAID 0 configuration? I am constantly hearing different answers and arguments against and for this configuration.  I just want to know if it is possible and if it has good results?!

I had four of them in a RAID 5 configuration that worked well for approximately 3 years. The drive was fast and had plenty of cache. After 3.5 years (of 24/7 use), one of the drives did fail. However, due to the 5yr warranty on it, it wasn't an issue. My only words of caution are that because it is a 7200 rpm drive, it will run warmer (and even more so if there are multiple disks in an array) than many drives that are slightly slower and better suited for RAID arrays. The best use would be to use the drive as a boot disk and/or local storage disk. However, you won't be disappointed if you decide to use it for a RAID array.
