Decent Drive
Pros: Bought two as replacements for older 400i's. Does what it supposed to. Haven't tried the Light scribe but burns DVDs and CDs quickly and haven't had one coaster yet. Read times are good and haven't had any probs yet with DVD's/CD's in other systems. So far very happy.
Cons: They are a little noisy on spin up, but totally livable. I was alarmed when I first fired them up as the drives 'thump' on sys boot up. I traced it to the tray locking catch, so I suspect this must be normal as it hasn't hurt anything nor degraded the tray motor in any way. I did write HP about it, but haven't heard back yet (still within the 24/48hr response time). I'll post what HP says.
Overall Review: Were packed poorly for shipping, no peanuts just a little tissue paper - drives just rattled around in box. A first for NE to ship badly, thank goodness the drives were packed in sturdy styrofoam boxes from HP or I don't think they would have survived the trip!
Buyer Beware!
Pros: Looked nice and reviews were high. So I bought two.
Cons: This is a demanding card even on the best of systems. High PSU requirements. Poor construction, runs hot even at idle. User manual is laughable, good luck with Crossfire setup and multi monitors. Packaged software is horrible. Crashes when installing on Parental Control. No choice in custom setup. SmartDoctor did not support 2nd card. Catalyst fails to load 90% of time. Tech support lacking. Read ASUS forums before considering this card, I wish I did.
Overall Review: Major dissapointment all around. Had to RMA first card for bad construction, heat sink detaches from GUI and RAM. Excessive heat sink compound used and proved to be a hinderance on performance.
Works
Pros: Bought for my notebook, works fine. Snapped right in, was recognized by Windows... can't say much more than that. Works.
Cons: none
Beat my old 900!
Pros: This is what my 900HD should have been. Works well, plenty of storage and reasonably fast for a notebook. Add the 2gb mem over the stock 1gb. They fixed the bow in the key board the 900 had, but you lose the right shift key. No biggie. Does all my general work on the road with no problem, though it's not a power house and can bog down when crunching large files of text. Battery life is surprising good, it actually lasts about five hours before needing a recharge.... and that's at high consumption use on the processor. Granted you're not gonna run Crysis on this, but I was amused to be able to run WZ2100 with no lag. I couldn't even think of running a game on the 900, and that was with 2gb mem. On board vid is acceptable for what it is. This is an internet/text machine not much more. If you can be happy with that, it's worth it.
Cons: The case that comes with it is a bit cheesy. It would do in a pinch, but recommend a more durable one if you travel alot. A small mouse is a plus as well, I'm not much on touch pads.
Overall Review: I must mention that this little guy runs very quiet and cool compared to it's 900 brother. I've left it running plugged into the PS for a week solid and not once has it over heated or locked up crunching burn in numbers/graphs from my desktop. I'm impressed at its reliability so far!
Love them!
Pros: Awesome for gaming on X-box! They do produce a little digital audio buzz, but I haven't fully explored the DSP functions yet. I'm sure that I can remove most of the hiss, but for right out of the box they sound great. They are a little heavy, not like my AXPs that I use on the PC. Padded for comfort and make long sessions easy to endure. Audio is the winner with these, very detailed and rich. Buzz is only noticeable when no sound is present.
Cons: Aside from being a little heavy, is the cord. I could have gone with an IR set but you have to maintain a line of sight for those, so separation drop outs occur with those systems. The cord is long enough to give ample play space so you not glued to the monitor/TV. The hand control is hard to read as the letters have no color to set off what is what, my reason for 4 stars. Lastly, voice works very well for VOX, except some folks sound like chipmunks when talking, you sound fine though. Again, that may be a DSP setting.
Overall Review: The mic is great, no probs so far, but I dislike the mount clip. Kinda cheesy. Why they did it this way is odd considering how Tritton did it with the AXP version for PC. Still, overall a solid headset for gaming that sounds really great when you consider the X-box alternative headset.
Good drive
Pros: Not very special as far as spec, but it is small/thin enough for travel and fits in nicely in the note book bag. Nice point it doesn't require a power supply, but can suck a battery down quickly, so it is best used when note book is connected to supply. Does what it supposed to. Am very pleased with it for a carry around.
Cons: This is the only down side so far, requires 2 USB ports to give ample power when running on battery. Asus recommends to use both when even using the laptops PS as some do not give sufficient power for the drive. Next the tray is delicate and you need a soft touch when placing the disk on the spindle, you might break it before the disk 'snaps into place. It is a little noisy for it's size, but it is external so that jumps out at me.
Overall Review: Would be a 5 star except for the dual USB demand. It does make the note book run a little warmer because of the demand on it. I can live with the noise and touchy tray.
