Not Quite Shimmering
Pros: HDMI output, Full size USB and Mini-USB ports. All the other wonderful things mentioned in the 5 egg THRIVE reviews.
Cons: USB connections limited to FAT-formatted storage. No Cert-driven VPN
Overall Review: Thinking from a Windows' perspective, I expected the USB ports to allow more general use. One thing that I would have been able to use was my USB UMTS/3G stick, giving me a data connection when no wi-fi was available. Also, my larger capacity USB drives were formatted under NTFS to circumvent the 4gb FAT barrier - I hadn't heard about ex-FAT until today, and so those drives won't be recognized until reformatted. Lastly, even with it built-in I was unable to get Google Talk to work properly - couldn't get the video on, although the camera functions work well. That last may be my own ignorance - we'll see.
DOA - RMA'd
Pros: The specs met my needs for a mATX board
Cons: DSOA - I couldn't get the thing to POST, no vide display.
Overall Review: Normally, the return process for Newegg is one of it's shining points. However, if you're out of the country (as I am), it's exceedingly painful. I had to RMA this board, and while the process is simple enough, the mailing and processing time is too long. It's been over 2 weeks since I received my RMA number, and Newegg sent me a notice that they'd received it just 2 days ago. It's still in "Received" mode, which means that I won't get a replacement motherboard for another 2 weeks. Here is what I might have considered: Newegg might have offered me a replacement board which I'd pay for up front. When they received the original back then they could have refunded my money, a partial refund if the item wasn't returned in accordance with the RMA requirements, or no refund if the motherboard was not actually defective (and then they could have sent the item back to me). Instead of a month turn-around I could have the system working within half the time. Newegg - are you listening?
Corrected Review - Bumped up to 5 Eggs...
Pros: Received it - no damage. Put it together without issue. Received 3 locks, which was confusing because I only have one lockable door. One of the locks fits that door. I presume that other 2 are for a configuration that includes lockable side doors, as they are shorter.
Cons: None - once I figured out that I had 3 locks instead of just 2.
Overall Review: Once I got all the parts together and the locks sorted out (why does NavePoint send more hardware than necessary?), it turned out to be a great experience. A great value.
I assume that the SSD works like the other Samsung SSDs have worked for me. This is about shipping
Pros: I'm giving 3 stars for the product, because I have a lot of faith in these Samsung SSDs - won't buy anything else.
Cons: Again, none with the product. After the purchase was complete, Newegg handed my 3 oz package to FedEx who promptly gave me a tracking number and told me to expect my shipment in 11 days. 11 days - what is this, Pony Express? I contacted FedEx about this and they told me that they actually HAD NO IDEA WHEN MY SHIPMENT WOULD ARRIVE because they hand it off to USPS. I promptly canceled my order and received RMA instructions for the return. Now all I have to do is wait for the product to show up so I can send it right back. I've decided against making any more purchases with Newegg - there are many online facilities that'll happily take my money, and Price Match while they're doing it. I've been a customer of their since 2001.
Overall Review: I recommend the product but not the store.
No Bluetooth
Pros: Large screen for a netbook. Nice styling. Very attractive.
Cons: Pre-installed junk. No bluetooth, inspite of the fact that bluetooth software is pre-installed. Not as snappy as expected.
Overall Review: I've come to expect bluetooth in just about every laptop on the market, and would not have bought this had I known it wasn't there, but I'll get a BT dongle and plug it in when I need to use it. It's primary function is to watch videos on the go, and for that it works fine. I had to uninstall most of the Asus apps & trialware because I don't see myself ever using them. Still a lot of junk on there that I'll probably uninstall after I figure out what they do/don't do. Everything else, though, is a plus!
Um, No.....
Pros: Rechargeable mouse with charger. Narrow keyboard, looks cool. Bluetooth.
Cons: Problems between my wi-fi and this using XP. No numeric keypad, top row of keys is actually part of the keyboard design, instead of dedicated keys. Keyboard sits flat (no elevation). Keys are not where I expect them to be.
Overall Review: I had to install Vista to get the keyboard/mouse working right. Although I'll keep the set, it'll be relegated to use with my Home Theater pc.
