First you'll need the breakout cable to go from the RAID card to go to your sata drive.  Each connector supports up to 4x SATA drives, but it does NOT power them.  Since your device is an external one, I would not recommend using it with a RAID card.  But if you do I would recommend that all drives are the same capacity, speed, etc.  More or less a bunch of the same thing.  You can get converter connectors that make sata into e-sata connections as they are the same thing, more or less.  What you have to realize, is that this is really meant for a server, or full tower.   Again, if you go through with this, the drives MUST be connected to the SAME cable each time.  i.e.  eHDD 0 always paired with cable 0, eHDD 1 with cable 1.  Make sure to label or tag each device.  To make sure I've said it enough, I would NOT use this card for eSATA drives.
