how do you change batteries and what kind of batteries are required?

This mouse requires two AA batteries. Changing the batteries requires that you slide off a section of the bottom of the mouse. It's easy to do, and there are no screws involved.

This mouse is extremely efficent, and you will rarely have to change batteries. I got over six months of charge from a pair of batteries. When battery changes are required, the light on the top of the mouse will pulse red. The light is mild and unobtrusive (unlike, say, a typical LED on the front of a computer case).

what is the range for this mouse?

Interesting question. I just walked to the far edge of the room and tried it and it still controls the cursor, so the range is at least fifteen feet (five meters). For all I know it may go twice that far, but from the hallway I was unable to see the monitor well enough to know if the cursor was moving.

what are two button on side for?

I use mine for forward and (most importantly) back while web browsing.  The buttons can be programmed to do other functions with the Logitech SetPoint software.  I'm not sure what other options there are (not in front of my PC at the moment) but one option I found was "Close."

Yes this mouse is the best I have used for win 7,8 and I even use it to work on older pc. I have big hands and it fits perfect the batteries last a long time

Yes. The wireless receiver is a standard USB receiver that to the computer appears as a generic USB mouse. So this will work on just about anything. It even works on my android phone!

I scroll with the middle button a lot. Does it make loud clicking noise when doing so, or is it relatively quiet?

The scroll wheel has a "click" feel but there is no noticeable sound at arms length.  There must be a sound, but nothing over the ambient level in the room.

How is the battery life?  we have two or three wireless mice, that are kind of hard on batteries.

I use mine most of the day (12 hours) and the batteries hold up remarkably well.  They are hooked up with both batteries in the same direction so this may help the longevity.
Good mouse, nice size and is sturdy.  (I drop mine once a week!)

I buy it in combination with the matching keyboard and the keyboard always wears out before the mouse.
