No, you cannot use a Kaby lake CPU i.e. intel 7th Gen CPU on a z370 series chipset motherboard such as this one. You need z170 or z270 for kaby lake or z370 for coffee lake i.e intel 8thgen CPU's. As for your GPU, the generation of GDDR memory doesn't really matter, any PCI Express based graphics card will work.

Will this board support my current 7th Gen i7 6700k CPU?

No. This board supports the new 8th generation 8000 series chips at the moment. The chipset is what you need to do research on. This board is Z370 intel chipset you need the z270. Look these up on Google.

Will this board accept my Geforce 980 GTX?  it appears the heatsink in the front might block it.

The chipset heatsink is shorter than the PCI-E sockets. It will not block your GPU.

No, the box is not covered in cellophane or otherwise sealed (at a store, it would be possible to open the box and see the motherboard).

GeForce GTX 1070 / 1080 - On your average system the card requires you to have a 600 Watts power supply unit.

GeForce GTX 1070 / 1080 SLI - On your average system the cards require you to have a 850~900 Watts power supply unit.

If you want to overclock everything, then you will probably want something a little bigger.  I'd personally lean towards somewhere in the neighborhood of 800 just to be safe if you are only running one card.

I understand this can all be confusing, but I highly recommend understanding what style motherboards fit your selected chip.

This motherboard does have an internal WIC with external intennas, so you do not need a wireless card. Remember though a hardwire is always recommended over wireless to reduce latency. Also this board, and any Z370 style will support Coffee Lake processors. If you’re not going to be using the advanced over clocking features and/or NVMe slots, you could get a cheaper motherboard.

I also (after looking at your handle) would like to remind you that a 8700k is not needed for gaming. You would see very little benefit over a 8600k if you’re buying strictly for gaming. You could use these extra funds to buy a stronger GPU which would net you better gaming performance.
