Question 1

What are those two 8 pin connectors on the top of the board for?  Are those for the video card?  If so can you use those plugs instead of the 8 pin on the physical card?

I assume that you're talking about the two small, rectangular 8 pin ports at the edge of the board above the ram slots. These are known as EPS ports and supply power to the motherboard itself along with the main 24 pin cable. They must both be connected to a power supply in order for the motherboard to function. If the graphics card you're using has an 8 pin port on it, it must also be connected to a power supply in order for the card to function.

Question 2

What's a good power supply for this motherboard?  I'm thinking about getting 450w.

Add up power rating of each device you plug in to motherboard - CPU, Video,  RAM, Drives, and anything that plugs into it, then add 20% more.  That will begin with enough to operate.  If you plan to operate with more plugin devices in the future,  now is the best time to add power for the future as well.   Why might you be looking at this level motherboard when you don't know enough to figure your power needs?   Man - this is elementary stuff.

is it atx full tower?

It's listed as a normal ATX board and will fit in an ATX case but I am pretty sure it closer to eATX as it's nearly the same size as my old eATX board.

Question 4

How do the display/Thunderbolt I/O work. Do you need a video card? Will the display ports work by themselves?

Yes with DisplayPort out, I'm not sure what version displayport, probably 1.3.  The motherboard comes with short displayport you plug in your video card then to the motherboard, then that routes the video over the thunderbolt, which then operates as a fast USB with video on top, which is supported by newer monitors.  I was curious with the same question prior to getting the motherboard, but there is NO video on the motherboard.  You actually have two displayport IN ports, and two outbound thunderbolt.  I'm not sure if you could bind two displayports out one thunderbolt, but a single displayport can output more than one video signal.  It's all dependant on the resolution vs bandwidth. Would it support DDR4-3800 memory even though it's not listed in the specs ?

The PRIME X299-DELUXE II Memory QVL   Shows options for 3800   So i guess will.  That said when running  higher clock speeds you can still run into issues sometimes even when they say it will work. I run dominator  platinum 64g 3200  works fine.     good luck.

I have 128GB (8 x 16GB) in mine but it goes through a fail/safe reboot cycle until it gets down to 96GB (6 x 16GB).  Very disappointing.  I wouldn't buy this board again or recommend it to anyone else.

Is it better to plug monitors into video card or the DVI on motherboard?

Hello Chris,

If you use a graphics card with this board, the integrated graphics options are automatically disable so you will need to connect the monitors to the graphics card.  But between the two it is always better to use the graphics card for video output (especially if you are gaming or running 3D applications).  Hope this helps!

If this board ships with a bios revision prior to 0210 will I be able to update it with a core i9-9940 processor installed? The 0210 added support for i9-99xx processors.

Yes , I have same processor and recently updated Bios. I would suggest a clean install as some things get buggy. Make sure you back up important files to be safe.

Does the Prime Deluxe II include the thunderbolt 3 card?  It seems the Prime Deluxe does include thunderbolt?

It doesn't need a card.  The Thunderbolt ports are built into the rear IO panel.
