GA-Z97-HD3 GA-Z97-HD3

GIGABYTE 9 series Ultra Durable™ motherboards feature GIGABYTE DualBIOS™, an exclusive technology from GIGABYTE that protects arguably one of your PC's most crucial components, the BIOS. GIGABYTE DualBIOS™ means that your motherboard has both a 'Main BIOS' and a 'Backup BIOS', making users protected from BIOS failure due to virus attack, hardware malfunction, improper OC settings or power failure during the update process.

ESD Protection for USB and LAN

GIGABYTE 9 Series motherboards raise the bar in terms of protecting your system, providing advanced electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection for both your Ethernet LAN and USB ports, both common sources of ESD-related failures. Each LAN and USB port is paired with a dedicated protection filter that can withstand high electrostatic discharges, protecting your system from common electrical surges and even direct lighting strikes.

Power Failure Protection with Anti-Surge IC

GIGABYTE 9 series Ultra Durable™ motherboards also feature special anti-surge ICs that protect your motherboard, and your PC from any surge in power delivery that may occur, helping to ensure that your PC is equipped to deal with any potentially irregular and inconsistent power delivery.

Humidity Protection with New Glass Fabric PCB

There is nothing more harmful to the longevity of your PC than moisture, and most parts of the world experience moisture in the air as humidity at some point during the year. GIGABYTE 9 series motherboards have been designed to make sure that humidity is never an issue, incorporating a new Glass Fabric PCB technology that repels moisture caused by humid and damp conditions.

Glass Fabric PCB technology uses a new PCB material which reduces the amount of space between the fiber weave, making it much more difficult for moisture to penetrate compared to traditional motherboard PCBs. This offers much better protection from short circuit and system malfunction caused by humid and damp conditions.

All New Heat Sink Design

GIGABYTE 9 series motherboards feature new heat sink designs that offer uncompromisingly efficient cooling on key areas of the motherboard including the PWM area and chipset (PCH). GIGABYTE 9 Series motherboards offer cooling support of the crucial PWM area so even the most aggressive and extreme configurations will be kept well within optimal thermal parameters.

4K Ultra HD Support

4K resolution is the next technological milestone in high-definition content delivery, utilizing approximately 4,000 pixels on the horizontal axis, more than four times today's standard HD pixel density. GIGABYTE motherboards provide native 4K support with integrated Intel® HD Graphics via HDMI.

HDMI™-The Next Generation Multimedia Interface

HDMI™ is a High-Definition Multimedia Interface which provides up to 5Gb/s video transmitting bandwidth and 8-channel high quality audio all through a single cable. Able to transmit superior, uncompressed digital video and audio, HDMI™ ensures the crispest rendering of digital content up to 1080p without the quality losses associated with analog interfaces and their digital-to-analog conversion. In addition, HDMI™ is compatible with HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection), allowing the playback of Blu-ray/HD DVD and other protected media content.

DVI Support

DVI (Digital Visual Interface) is a video interface standard designed for carrying uncompressed digital video data and to maximize the visual quality of digital display devices, such as LCD monitors, digital projectors, and so on. In addition, the DVI interface is compatible with HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection).

great mobo

Pros: I am running an i5 (4670k) with no problems. Using Linux to run WCG 24/7 with no ands, ifs or buts.

Cons: Intel change the format to 1151.

Other Thoughts: This mobo runs Linux Mint 17.x/18.x with no problems.
I do not overclock any more so I can't comment on that performance.

“On a scale of 1-10, I’d give this board about a noine” -Techno Beaver (a.k.a. Baba Booey)

Pros: This board was on sale plus a rebate when purchased (same price as an Intel G3258)
Z97 Intel Chipset
Came with latest bios installed.
Bios is rich in features.
Included user manual is minimal, but adequate.
DVI-D, VGA, HDMI output for Intel integrated graphics
Four fan headers
Excellent board layout. Micro ATX, but board does not feel cramped.
Nothing exotic… just tried and true, reliable components that actually work.

Cons: Bios CPU fan and case fan speed control has me baffled. I’m sure I’ll get it in time with some experimentation and patience.

Other Thoughts: Intel Pentium G3258 CPU

After thirty five years of Apple and Microsoft systems, this is my first Linux box. This is also my first GIGABYTE Motherboard. I gotta say that I’m pretty impressed. New tricks for an old dog.

So… is the “geek” card emailed to me so I can print it off, or does it just come regular snail-mail?

OC Update- After messing around with voltages for a few days, here are some preliminary stable overclocking results with this motherboard:

CPU- 4.2 GHz @ 1.36 volts
Uncore (cache)- 3.7 GHz @ 1.275 volts
DRAM- 2400 MHz with 11-13-13-31 timing @ 1.62 volts (SA +.2, AIO +.2, DIO +.2)
IGPU- 1.4 GHz @ 1.2 volts

Before I did anything I set Load Line Calibration to turbo and raised Vrin to 2.050 volts. I also disabled Turbo Boost, EIST, and C-States.

I maxed out the CPU to 4.5 GHz with a Vcore of 1.45. Linux Mint would not load at 4.6 GHz. I turned off ondemand in Linux Mint to see if that would help achieve higher clocks, but it didn’t. Thermals at 4.5 GHz were fine, but in the interest of a longer lifespan for the CPU I dialed things back to the above listed speed and voltage. Using psensor to monitor and stressapptest at 10 minute intervals for an hour, I recorded core temperatures no higher than 68C @ 4.2 GHz.

As for the Uncore, well, this particular Pentium chip seems to be a bit of a dog. Linux will not load at anything above 3.7 GHz no matter what voltage I used. This could be the silicon lottery. It could be Linux Mint. It could be the motherboard. It could be me (not knowing what the f*#% I’m doing). I’m going to blame the silicon lottery.

DRAM was interesting. I had no problem running the Vulcans at 2400 (11-13-13-31) @ 1.62 volts (SA +.2, AIO +.2, DIO +.2).

I cranked up the integrated graphics to 1400 MHz @ 1.25 volts ‘cause I could. I’ve read that 1700 at 1.3 is not uncommon, but I have not gone there yet.

Real world test has been Minecraft as it’s what my kids play most. It looks like i’m getting 50-60 frames per second at 1080p.

Nice motherboard

Pros: East installation
Boots very fast
BIOS seems clear and easy to navigate

Cons: No issues thusfar

Other Thoughts: I recycled an i5-4670k from an ATX build and decided to go micro-ATX this time around. This was a great board. Like other said, it didn't have any additional stuff I didn't need and I'm only running one GPU so it works great for my needs. Would highly recommend.

great buy for Gaming

Pros: It is easy to install and the instructions are very simple.
The on board graphics are great if you are waiting on a video card to come in or just waiting for your pay check to get one
The BIOS is also very simple to understand, didn't have to do an upgrade on the BIOS like some motherboards when you take it out of the box

Cons: Be careful of the disc that comes with the motherboard. Do not download anything that has to deal with Google from the disc, all of the apps on there are very old.
On board speaker does not have the plus or minus sign on it so you have to play with it to see what side it is suppose to be on.

Other Thoughts: Overall: this is a great buy for the price that you pay for it.

Excellent, strong motherboard

Pros: It's very strong and included everything I could need in a Micro ATX motherboard. I was pretty rough with the installation but everything held up very well. I really like the orange colors and LOVE the fact that there isn't huge GAMING text on it like the other Gigabyte motherboard I was looking at.

Cons: Unfortunately no SLI.

Other Thoughts: Overall it's really solid. Don't have any complaints other than I wish it was in stock for more people to buy it.

Good all-around motherboard

Pros: This motherboard has a good mix of ports, RAM slots and on-board connectors. It's a small board, but packed with just about every feature most people would need. It works really well with Linux (Debian) as well as FreeBSD, which is a huge deal to me.

The BIOS version was only two versions old and flashing to the latest worked fine using a small thumb flash-drive.

I don't want or need overclock capabilities, so I can't comment on how this board fares compared to others.

For the processor, I purchased and installed an Intel Core i5-4590 processor (Haswell, quad-core, 3.3 GHz, LGA 1150). Combined, the system is very quick and responsive compared to my older ASUS motherboard / AMD FX-6300 setup.

BIOS setup is fairly standard, although I think Gigabyte was trying to make it look super-slick and 'cool'. I'm an older, non-gaming guy, and I don't need all the eye-candy, so I switched to the 'Classic' setup interface.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: I had been a constant AMD processor / ASUS motherboard purchaser for many years, but after what seems like constant incompatibilities with Linux and FreeBSD, I decided to shake things up and buy this Gigabytle board and an Intel processor instead. Thus far I am very pleased with the decision.

If this works well in the long-term, I think Gigabyte might have a new repeat customer.

Wonderful Board

Pros: Best bang for the buck mATX Z97 board you'll find. The BIOs make it easy to overclock.

Cons: None that I've found.

Other Thoughts: I've always had great experience with Gigabyte products and this board was no exception.
