The platform is designed for highly threaded application, delivering 16 / 12 / 8 core multi-core performance, quad HT3 links with up to 6.4GTps interconnect rate per link, and a 12MB shared L3 cache.

ASUS P8B-X

Great Server Board

Pros: I have been running this board for 4 to 5 years now..Usual build for a server. Put whatever CPUs that fit and a F-TON of ram in it..
2 x amd 6124 8 core CPUs
128gb of Ram

Cons: It overheats every once and awhile when run continuously but that is my fault. I bought a case with the power supply in it and closed it up with 2 rinky dink fans.

Other Thoughts: I do NOT like ASUS. They have the hardest server motherboards ever.... But when you want a server motherboard ASUS is the one to get.
I did this build because I had/(has) an idea for a business which my backers backed out. SO!!! No worries I got the server.
Also I bought another one an gave it to my nephew. Same build except without the case. He has it in a milkcrate running as a MUD server.

ASUS KGPE-D16 SSI EEB Server Motherboard Dual Socket G34 AMD SR5690

Pros: - I held out for years, stingy to pay $500. Got it 80% off. Finally - dual 16 core, g34 awesomeness and 128GB ram.

Cons: - Nothing at this time, will update as it moves along.

Other Thoughts: - Cant beat the Egg, when they decide they want to have a Sale!

Random reboot fixed

Pros: Great layout. Running three years now in a 2U case running Server 2008R2. Paired with 32GB of ECC ram and 2 Octocore Opterons.

Cons: Random reboots but there is a fix.

Other Thoughts: The random reboot issue almost drove me insane. Corrupted my exchange database three times because of it. I finally found the issue is the extra PSU plug on the board for monitoring the power supply (Redundant PSU). 5 pin connector I think. Unplugged that and not a single crash since.

still strong after 5 years

Pros: Have this board sitting in my production server for a popular website at a data center, never had an issue, iKVM redirect console can be a pain at times. Works with sever and desktop ram, onboard sw raid works well, after 5 years no sign of wear on the board. Board has been moved from a tower to a 1u rack, had different ram types, and still works like the day I took it out of the box.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: ASUS = Quality

Faulty board, unacceptable customer service

Pros: All of the features of this board are good, and the price is reasonable. Dual CPU for high workload, plenty of space for RAM. The PIKE slot is probably not useful, but it's there. For the price, it delivers exactly what it should, assuming the board functions properly.

Cons: Fan ports are a bit tough to deal with, motherboard power is not in a smart place if your case has the PSU on the bottom. Minor nuisance, not even worth -1 egg. All the eggs I subtracted have to do with the fact that my board is faulty and I can't get a replacement or warranty service of any acceptable type from ASUS. For five bennies, this board should not have problems, and when it does, ASUS should be busting their rumps to fix it.

What's the problem? Put any load on CPU2 and the system crashes. No kernel panic, no reboot, nothing in any system log. We're talking serious low-level problems here. All other components removed, rotated, replaced, and the crash is still perfectly reproducible with CPU2 enabled (and never happens with CPU2 disabled).

I put in an RMA, was approved, gave all my details, address, etc. and waited patiently for weeks. I emailed to ask why six weeks had passed and I hadn't even received a tracking number, let alone a motherboard. I was told they were out of stock! WHY DID NO ONE SAY SO WHEN THE RMA WAS INITIATED?? You have a customer waiting for a product you said you'd ship to him, and you didn't bother to tell him -- for SIX WEEKS and not until he contacts you -- that nothing is going to be coming in the foreseeable future. Two weeks later, I'm still getting stonewalled. They can't do an RMA because they don't have it in stock, although they'd be happy to take mine away from me while I wait -- that's their solution. Send in my board. That won't get a replacement in stock any faster guys, use your brains.

Other Thoughts: This board is in service in a major research lab at a scientific research institution,* shared among a working group but mostly mine. I don't appreciate that after putting together a complex custom build and working very hard to ensure functionality and compatibility that the faulty mainboard can't get replaced immediately, as it ought to be. I can't justify the state of affairs, all research crawling at 50% capacity for months with not a single iota of help from ASUS -- and none coming. This is absolutely, completely, entirely unacceptable. This board may be a dud, this may be a systemic problem in manufacturing, YMMV, but nobody buys this board with the intention of not using both CPUs. They'd buy a cheaper board instead. There is no way this doesn't get a one egg review -- and I'll be reproducing this review everywhere else I can until I get some satisfaction.

*I'm not listed by Newegg as a "verified owner" because my institution put in the PO for this item, but it was purchased right here at the ol' Egg. This Byzantine arrangement also resulted in lengthy delays that resulted in a slow deployment of the system. Unlucky for us that we noticed this issue outside of Newegg's return / replace period, although to be honest, I'm considering looking for help from Newegg at this point...

Good Board-Super Poor Customer/tech Support

Pros: Works good. I have 10+ of these boards in use and I am using it in several ways, for eg. cluster, VmWare ESXi server, Server 2012 AD, Stand alone Ubuntu etc. All are working good ( RAID configurtion on Ubuntu was tricky but other then that everything else worked like charm with good performance)

Cons: Good Servermotherboard, but poor rating is for Worst customer service/support from Asus. I have more then 10 of these board in my inventory purchased on different time in last 3 years. All are working good except one went bad month ago. I called Asus tech support and learned that they have long wait time. Call would drop very frequently and you will be placed to queue again. Customer rep were not knowledgeable enough to help with issues. I asked replacement and was given two options.
- Advance replacement ( $4XX credit card hold and they will ship according to shipping charge I pay)
- I send it in advance and asus will repair it in 5 days and will send it back.
As its server and several users are affected, I paid overnight shipping with advance replcement and board did not showed up until week.(I had to call several time to get it shipped)
Whatever replacement came was not working. Once I put it together(with new power supply, nothing else attaached) motherboard gave popped sound and smoke came out and no display.
Upon calling Asus told me that they will replace board again and If I need advance replacement I will need to do cc info and hold again.
I have done that more then 10 days ago... I don't have my board yet in my hand.
Server is down for about a month now and no help...

They know this is server board but their support is poor then desktop component..............

As tech, anyone will need tech support from company.. I havent seen such a poor and slow support from any company yet as far as server component.

Other Thoughts: I would not buy anymore as I cant afford my server down for a month because of poor tech support. If they would have told me that don't expect from asus, I would have purchased new board and replaced bad but rep. would tell me it will come in two days and then nothing comes.....

This is a great board, Rock Solid

Pros: Able to use Non-ECC RAM (number one plus)
Spacious!
Lots of headers for variable speed fans.
Regular firmware updates to support new processors.

Cons: PIKE is worthless. It costs a lot for the update and you might aw well just by a regular SAS card.
Takes a very long time to post.

Other Thoughts: I bought this board for a VMWARE lab a few years ago and it's been rock solid ever since. I put all variable speed fans in so its pretty dang quiet for a 16 core server.
I bought a cheap 2nd hand 2U server on an auction site and I couldn't even run the thing it was so loud!
