While an iGPU is not *required*, the on-board video connections will not function without an iGPU.

does the m.2 slot support NVME?

Yep, I'm using it with the SAMSUNG 950 PRO M.2 2280 and it works just fine on Ubuntu. I would imagine it works just as well with other OSes.

Does this motherboard support ECC ram?

Yes it does, but make sure it's UDIMM not RDIMM.
