will this work with the sapphire r9 390 nitro? i need to get both a power supply and a video card for under 350, i have a crappy computer and i just want a short term upgrade solution

That depends on the total power required by your computer when adding the r9 390. to help figure out how much power you'll need you can go to pc part picker and list the components in your pc including the r9 390, and it'll tell you the estimated wattage required. I'd reccomend choosing a power supply between 50 and 100 watts higher than estimated to give room for small upgrades and prolong the life of the power supply.

how do I find out if this will work in my tower?

This will work for almost all systems it works with both 20 and 24 pin motherboards, it also has plenty of other cables ranging from 4-8 pin connectors as long as your not running a super high power computer this will do the job. I run it on my current gaming computer and it works like a dream.

I have just purchased the CX750M refurbished unit, it was returned because none of cable/connectors was compatible with my ATX mother board.  Now I'm thinking that the package was just missing the right cable?

should have been a 24 pin plug and a 8 pin plug for an atx board. should also come with several molex, 2 sata power plugs. Maybe close to eight plugs in all. You might have to find an adapter for your motherboard? re-Check your pins# for your motherboard. You might be able to call corsair to get the right plugs/cable? Worth a shot
