Question 1

Can anyone confirm if the issue with coil whine has been fixed? Also, what causes this?

Last question - If I order one and it too has coil whine, will I have to pay more money to have it replaced. Hope not!

I have had more than 6 of these power supplies go through my shop in 2013. I can say that there was Coil Whine in the first unit the remaining 5 have not had this issue. The Whine on the first unit early this year was also very difficult to notice so depending on the surroundings the system is located in there is a good chance you would never even notice.

I have heard several explanations for the cause of the noise so I can not say for certain. In all explanations none of them indicated anything that would hinder performance.

The Seasonic Platinum power supplies are some of the very best anywhere in the world. I would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone. All of my systems now have them ranging from the 660 on up to the 1000 models and they have never let me or my clients down.

I see in one of the recent reviews here on Newegg where someone mentions that this PSU doesn't work with a GTX 780 video card. Can anyone confirm if this is correct or not?

There's no reason for it to be incompatible unless maybe it is/was underpowered for that particular computers other parts that also draw power.

Personally, seeings the GTX780 req's a 600w or greater PSU I'd look at the 760w or 860w versions of this PSU. I have two of this 660w PSU in my modest computers. But, if I was that close to the GTX780's req's with a 660w PSU, for what I'd be spending on it I'd prefer to go with greater output, 760w or even 860w, so that down the road in the future I had room to upgrade without needing to drop the cash on yet another PSU.

Rock stable voltages and I highly recommend these. But you'll be cutting it close with this 660 and if you wanted to OC the card then IMO you'd be pushing the envelope.

Always allow for overhead when choosing a PSU. It shortens their lifespan to run them maxed out. Not to mention at full bore they'll generate more heat, and noise.

Question 4

The specs indicate 20+4 Pin for main power connection, I am running an HP Compaq Pro 6300 Microtower PC (Prod#C9J97UT);  which I believe has a 20 pin main power connection on the mobo. Will this PSU work on this system?

Yes, it will work if the power supply physically fits inside the case. You more than likely have the 24 pin connector. Either way, the 20 and 24 pin connector are the same. The extra 4 pins are just attached on the end and can be removed easily.

I have a kilawatt and it says my load is about 725W, do you think I could get by using this? Would it blow? I know I should get a higher wattage PSU but I'm on a VERY tight budget.

No, I love this Seasonic, but you must get a PSU that is rated higher than the load. Tip 1> Peak efficiency is if output is 40 to 80% actual load, so if you build 50 to 60% of capacity, you're good. Tip 2> The difference in dollars per year in electrical cost between plain 80 certified (below bronze) and platinum is surprisingly small. Tip 3> Manufacturer's ratings are optimistic.  If you really need 725w, a 1.2kw is the target, however, for a  tight budget, perhaps look at Rosewill RBR1000-M. Newegg has a PSU wattage calculator under Shopping Tools.

Question 6

I just build a gaming rig and I put my 7 years old PC power 750 watt PSU in it temporarily, however, I very tempted to upgrade to this PSU because of the full modular design (I want a clean, uncrowded look in my case), will this 660W seasonic be adequate power for my setup? (I will not be running SLI)

It will cut it, but I think you'd really be better served by going with the 860W version. Power supplies are at their most efficient when they're running at roughly 60% of their capacity. And that means using less power and producing less heat in your case (as well as less noise from fewer fans). If you go with the 660 you're also cutting off room for further possible upgrades in the future (that's the issue I'm running into at the moment). As for the power supply itself? It's great and I love mine.

What is the typical lifespan of this psu, mine lasted barely under a year, will I have the same result with this one?

These seem to be a top notch product. High end components, fantastic assembly quality, fully competent design. Not that many power supply makers offer a 5 year waranty (yes some offer longer - 7 year, these are commonly at a higher price point for a given wattage psu, from the test reports I have found I prefer seasonic) Unless it gets struck by lightning, or you plan on drawing over it's wattage rating on any or all of the voltages or perhaps plan on running it in a airflow starved case or at 100 degrees C (boiling point of water at sea level) I fully expect it to be functioning well after the warranty period is over. (note - Pay very close attention to the cables supplied with any psu. The standard cable for higher wattage video cards is wired opposite to the accessory power cable for mainboards. This is how the industry evolved. The connectors are different only slightly. look closely at any pair of connectors that do not mate easily. I can imagine folks who's mainboard won't power up or whose video card smoked itself to death on power up "may" have mis-plugged their cables.)

Will this work in the Silverstone FT03 or will the cord placement or switch be an issue?

All the sata cables use T junctions, so make sure the case doesn't have any drives that would require an L junction because the tray is against two sides of the case.

If in doubt, SIlverstone sells PSUs and modular cable kits for their tiny form factor cases, whenever I get their small cases I get one of their full modular psus (some of them come with the short cables by default).

I'm running a i7 4770k with ATIAMD FirePro W7000 and 32 gig of RAM @ 1099 MHz (11-13-13-35) No issues at all.

Will the cables be long enough for an Antec P280?

I put this PS [Seasonic SS-660XP2] Inside a Fractal Design R4 Box. It fit well and I had No issues with cable lengths. The Fractal looks very close to the interior design of the Antec P280 from the pictures on the website. It shouldn't be an issue. A side note: This is a solid PS and has very stable regulation even during synthetic stress testing Ala Prime 95 and such. I am running an i7 3930K with a Noctua NH-D14 Cooler, 32 GB RAM and a GeForce GTX 660ti, M-Audio Delta 1010LT, 2Samsung SSD, 2 SATA 320GB and 7 fans. Power is Solid, good choice
