can I use this along side a media server as an external storage device and connect it to my router?

NAS, as stated by previous answer, is a good option. The definitive answer to this is NO - do not use the ICY Dock for your application. It is in the open, does not offer any stability, cover or active cooling to drives. Go for an external, enclosed drive, or load it in as another drive on the server and limit or allow access (if you have the room).
