An important tip from one of our users: don't just check total power output, find out what you need in the way of current on each power rail. If you need 20 A on your +12V rails and the supply only has 15A, it doesn't matter how many watts the supply puts out: don't buy it. Make certain that you have ENOUGH rails, too: sometimes, you need more than just two +12V rails for your setup.
Replacing an existing power supply is easier: just get a replacement that meets or exceeds the specifications of the old one. (You can usually find those printed on the side of the supply.)
That said, here's a power supply that is compatible with most ATX format motherboards, puts out 500 watts of power (see specifications for exact distribution). Could this be your next power supply?
ATX12V v2.0 Compatible Compatible with the ATX12V v2.0 standard, the Antec earthwatts EA500 provides maximum power stability to drive the latest Intel and AMD processors as well as other system components.
500W Maximum Power The Antec Earthwatts EA500 power supply provides a maximum power of 500W to deliver safe, reliable output for high-end computer systems.
Efficient Cooling The Antec Earthwatts EA500 is equipped with a low-noise 80mm fan to provide highly efficient cooling for the power supply and the whole system while remaining quiet operation.
80 Plus Certified The 80 PLUS certified power supply provides high power efficiency of at least 80% at any load between 20% and 100%, saving your money on your electrical bill, reducing heat in your computer's system and prolonging its life.
Pros:
This power supply is coming up on it's 8th year of running in my computers. This unit has ran tens of thousands of hours. Doubt anyone will be looking at the reviews considering this is discontinued but I find it great that the newest ones are people praising the longevity of the product like I am.
I remember buying Antec because I bought a competitor's PSU that only lasted two years before burning out.
We'll see how much more she has in her before she croaks. I'll be back to finish my review, which will act as a eulogy.
Cons: None, MFer is a tank
Pros: I've had this power supply for over 7 years and it's still running very strong. No issues or complaints, this was a very affordable power supply back in '08 and I would say I got more than my moneys worth.
Cons: None, still running strong. Does it's job without any issues
Pros: This power supply has lasted for 7 years. I have upgraded the rest of my hardware over time and this was the last part. It is still in great condition and has never given me any issues but it is time for a bit more power for some of the newer gpu's out there. I am sticking with Antec for my new psu since this one was a fantastic buy all those years ago.
Cons: None. 7 years strong and still running.
Pros: Amazing PSU. Has been running since 9/2007 on multiple builds and overclock systems. Is also a quite unit.
Cons: None what so ever.
Other Thoughts: This power supply has been moved across multiple system and currently running a FX-8150, HD6950, 8GB DDR3 1600Mhz, 2x 7200rpm HDD, 10x 120mm fans, Hyper 212 CPU cooler with pull and push setup. Sabertooth 990FX motherboard.
Pros: Great while it lasted
Cons: Didn't even make it 3 years.
Pros: Simple, solid PSU.
Cons: Wish it had lasted a few years longer. 5 years, for a PSU only lightly used, seems to indicate poor parts/manufacturing.
