Question 1

How are SSDs attached to trays? Looking to replace a similar product that uses snap-in attachment - very difficult to seat SSDs properly, very difficult to remove an SSD from tray.

The drives screw into the sleds on the underside screw holes for the drives (not the side holes). There are four screw holes. Screws are included. Works great for 7mm, 9mm, and even 12.5mm like older velociraptors (my co-worker had 4 velociraptor units in this). The drive sleds have a stamped sheet of metal on the bottom with a square cut-out in the center for the air to circulate on the underside. There is also a black removable plastic cover/top for each sled held in place by a tab so you push the tab and the covers can be lifted off. Drive mounting does not depend on the presence/absence of the covers. I don't use the plastic covers when I have spinning hard drives in there so the drives can breathe better on the top. In the main product photo (looking from an angle at the top, front, and right side) where you can see through the 8 top rectangular vents, you are looking at the sled covers for the top two drive sleds.

Yes this enclosure works with SAS disks. It's not stated on the Newegg store page, but a spec sheet on the American-media website (ds-524ssbk.pdf) explicitly states SAS&SATA.
The key on the SAS disks are there to stop them from plugging into SATA only backplanes. 
To use this with SAS disks will of course also require a SAS HBA and the appropriate SAS fan out cable. I currently have 2 of these attached to my LSI 9260-8i using SFF-8087 Serial Breakouts.
