Crush your enemies, climb the tower of paperwork -- or do both at the same time. Intel's Core 2 Quad Q9400 not only makes it possible, it makes it easy. The Core 2 Quad Q9400 has four cores that run at 2.66GHz and shares 6MB of L2 cache.

Quad cores means true multi-tasking and multi-threading. Tasks or threads get their own core; no more sharing one core and set of clock cycles. This lets you turn your system into the ultimate home entertainment center PC. One core handles the usual action on your operating system, while the second can play a DVD on the TV, the third download a file from internet, and the fourth one sends audio to the kids in another room with no lags or stutters. All this is made easier with Intel’s advanced Digital Media Boost.

The 45nm Intel Core 2 Quad processor is armed Intel HD Boost, which implementing new Intel Streaming SIMD Extension 4.1 (Intel SSE4.1) instructions for fast high definition video editing and encoding, enhance the multimedia performance.

  • newegg Intel Core 2 Quad-core Processor With four processing cores, the multitasking monster Quad-Core Intel Core 2 processor delivers fourfold the performance on highly-threaded applications, taking your desktop PC experience into a completely new realm of mega power. The powerful processor delivers serious performance on the ultra-demanding games of today and tomorrow. The innovative 45nm quad-core technology optimizes thermal performance for reduced power consumption and noise.
  • newegg Intel Advanced Smart Cache Intel Advanced Smart Cache Technology dynamically allocates the shared L2 cache to each processor core based on workload. This efficient, multi-core-optimized implementation increases the probability that each core can access data from fast L2 cache, resulting in significantly reduced latency for frequently used data and improved performance.
  • newegg Intel Wide Dynamic Execution With Intel Wide Dynamic Execution, each of the four cores can complete up to four full instructions simultaneously, improves execution speed and efficiency, delivering more instructions per clock cycle.
  • newegg Execute Disable Bit (EDB) Intel's Execute Disable Bit function can prevent certain classes of malicious "buffer overflow" attacks when combined with a supporting operating system. Execute Disable Bit allows the processor to classify areas in memory where application code can execute and where it cannot. When a malicious worm attempts to insert code in the buffer, the processor disables code execution, preventing damage or worm propagation.
  • newegg Intel Virtualization Technology (Intel VT) With Intel VT, one hardware platform functions as multiple "virtual" platforms. For business, Intel VT offers improved manageability, limiting downtime and maintaining worker productivity by isolating computing activities into separate partitions. In the home, Intel VT allows creating unique user environments for multiple family members using the same platform simultaneously.

Not Bad But not what i expected for a Quad Core

Pros: Very stable and runs just fine with the stock cpu, was hard to get the hang of how to get the stock cooler on but got it down now! overclocked very stable at 3.6 GHz. runs idle between 28 and 32 degrees c. full load at about 40 playing my games and sometimes 45. but i also us easytune 6 to keep my fan speed adjusted according to temp!

Cons: its not what i expected it to be. for a quad core i was thinking this thing was gonna muti task like a beast well it doesnt do alot of multi projects too well. its like if something is runnin it takes forever for something els to open. but it does run alot of things at once once they are open but i thought it would open multiple things faster. amd has just as good of cpus for better price!

Other Thoughts: maybe ill upgrade to the i7 and a new board with ddr3.

Rocks my socks off!

Pros: I went from an E8400 to a Q9400, and, to say the least, I was impressed. Particularly for games requiring heavy rendering and processing of many units like Supreme Commander Forged Alliance and Shattered Horizons, this processor churned out butter smooth frame rates in tandem with my HIS 5850. I went from seeing window panes and old-style movies to silky smooth images and mouth-watering action. The only thing missing from my perfect gaming experience was the processor didn’t play my games for me. I know. It was a shame. Leaving that aside, the temperature at start-up in a room temperature office was about 65-70 degrees, leaving something to be desired. Thus, I purchased the XIGMATEK HDT-S1283 120mm Rifle CPU Cooler, which brought up my idle temps to around 25-30 degrees Celsius. Not too bad, one might say. The price wasn’t too bad either. I purchased it for 189.99 with free shipping, and after 4 months, I have had no issues with it. This processor is just awesome, so get it

Cons: Didn't come with an iPad.
Doesn't make me my breakfast.
Doesn't give me free games on steam.
Didn't buy me Stanley Cup tickets.
Did I leave anything else out?

Duo to Quad

Pros: I replaced a E5200 Duo with this quad and it's great. It's not much faster but it's stronger, like it's on diesel fuel. It just doesn't slow down.

Cons: No cons at all.

Nice Upgrade

Pros: Nice upgrade for my socket 775 systems from our E6600s (my wife's as well). Upgraded to Q9400 and new graphics (5850) for our 3.5 year old PCs, and it should last us another 2-3 years or more I imagine. Nice speed boost, drastically helped my DVD encoding speeds. Both CPUs hit 3.2ghz with no effort at all on stock cooling and great temps!

Cons: Price is the same ballpark as the i5 series, but that would require a lot more money to update my entire platform.

Other Thoughts: Upgraded 2 computers for less than the cost of building one new machine on a newer platform. Breathed new life into my old machines, great plug and play option for those still on socket 775 with a compatible board. Should save me a lot of money until we build completely new systems years down the road.

Best Core 2 Quad under 200$

Pros: This processor is a multi-tasking beast! 4 processors, each running at 2.66 GHz, all on one chip. What's more to want?

I have mine at 3.2 GHz (400x8) without changing any voltage settings.

Cons: The 2 times I had to reapply the heat sink with thermal compound made me think it was running way hotter than it should be. Now, I have it under 65C while OCed and under load. Not quite as cool as my E7400 (temp. wise), but nothing I'm worried about. I have an aftermarket fan.

The multiplier limited to 8x is no fun.

Other Thoughts: Make sure any power hungry applications that you want to run support multiple cores, else you might be better off with a dual core.

A Fine Upgrade, but...

Pros: - True quad core (4 physical cores)
- LGA775. Should work on any board of that socket. Perfect for upgrading a Core 2 Duo or an older Core 2 Quad system.
- Price!

Cons: - Several Core i5 models at much higher clock speeds (> 3.2 GHz) are available for about the same price. A few i7 models can be had for $100 or so more.
- End of the line for Core 2 series. There are a few models better than this one, so there's limited opportunity for upgrade, but nothing new will come out for this socket.

Other Thoughts: Unless you're replacing an existing CPU (and don't want to get a new board and DDR3 RAM), you're better off going with a Core i5 or i7. Performance is significantly better there, and the price isn't too much higher (as long as you stay away from LGA1366--those boards are very expensive).

last possible upgrade

Pros: Upgraded from an e-6420 on a Gigabyte 965-p-ds3 r-3.3 motherboard. No budget to buy a new motherboard, processor and memory. After a BIOS update the system runs as expected.

I would definitely recommend this processor.

Cons: As others mentioned, the OEM HSF install is a horrible design. I reused my Thermaltake mini typhoon air HSF. Also cut my thumb and fingers on the razor sharp blades of the Intel HSF fins during cursory handling. My bad.

Other Thoughts: CPU is now over clocked to 3.2Ghz. Core temperatures and system temperatures are holding between 41-45 degrees C. Current ambient temperatures are between 75-80 degrees F.
System runs several Linux distributions and rarely XP. Overall speed appears to have increased. Running 'remastersys' is the only program that seems to invoke use of all four cores at 100% utilization for short periods of time according to installed 'screenlet' senors. Virtuabox machines appear to run almost as fast as native installs.
